Fahey wasn't too fond of the remixed "The Touch" that played during the credits for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron last year, the credits only offered an excerpt. Today, Stan Bush released the entire thing. Does the additional context make it better?Read more...

The late 80s was the best time to be a toy-obsessed child. Back then toy companies weren't afraid to release a toy that looked like a gun, contained toxic paint or weighed more than the kids it was being marketed to. It was a time when Hasbro, a couple years after releasing a toy aircraft carrier that measured more than seven feet in length, gave Transformers fans the largest official Transformers toy on the market for more than 25 years — Fortress Maximus. I missed his initial 1987 release. I missed his 2000 re-repaint as Car Robots Brave Maximus. I did not miss his 2013 Encore re-release. Being an adult kicks ass. In my social circles as an early-teen in the late 80s, I had several friends who claimed to own Fortress Maximus, but oddly enough, none of them ever let me play with him. They'd come to my house to play with the original Metroplex toy, sure, but when it came time to return the favor, they were strangely hesitant. I'm sure he was just locked away in their closets, because children never lie about such things. For decades I pined after this massive, 22-inch-tall beauty. I'd see him behind counters at science fiction and fantasy conventions. I'd catch glimpses of him in toy magazines. The internet came along, and suddenly I could stare at pictures of him when I wasn't surfing porn, and my hunger only grew. In 2000 I saw the Car Robots repaint boxed up in a hobby shop, but they wanted $200 for the Japanese import — $200 more than I could afford at the time. The only time I got close enough to touch a Fortress Maximus was during a visit to Epic Games in North Carolina last year, where I was delighted to discover not one but two of the figures in Jazz Jackrabbit creator Cliff Bleszinski's uninhabited office. Upon discovering Fortress Maximus was too large to stuff down my pants, I went back to yearning. This year the stars aligned. I found myself with a little extra cash around my (40th) birthday, just as Takara's re-release of the figure was going wide in Japan. After much hemming and hawing I pulled the trigger. I won't say how much I paid for the figure, but I will say it was easily more than three times the first generation version's $89.99 retail price. Just how big is Fortress Maximus? In robot mode he stands at around 22 inches tall, not counting his Master Sword (an affectation from the Japanese G1 cartoon series). To put that in perspective, here's Fortress Maximus next to a Nintendo 3DS XL. And here he is next to my nearly two-year-old son. And here he is behind the tallest Transformers in my modestly extensive collection. He's bigger than Car Robots Omega Prime (my favorite Optimus Prime variant). Burlier than Air Attack Optimus Primal. More massive than mildly broken Unicron (I need a new Unicron). More powerful than Energon Omega Supreme (that's a regular Omega with tomatoes and sour cream). He's the biggest Transformer there is, and he will remain so until Hasbro releases its 24-inch Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Metroplex later this year. His time as the tallest is almost over, and so I celebrate him, just in time. Fortress Maximus is part of G1 Transformers' Headmaster line of toys, which means he has a head that transformers into a robot. Here's his head. And here's his robot, Cerebros. Cerebros is also a Headmaster, because back in the day Hasbro could keep this shit up all day. Here's Cerebros' head, Spike, as in Spike Witwicky, who underwent an operation in order to be able to fold himself in half, because it seemed like a good idea at the time. Armed with essentially three heads (plus a pair of vehicle drones that form a robot named Cog), Fortress Maximus had a lot to focus on. It's why he's bristling with cannons, lasers and other instruments of destruction in robot form — they defend him while his head's elsewhere. A major factor in the joy of opening up the figure I've craved for 25 years is the application of the stickers. Back in the 80s it wasn't a toy worth having if you didn't have to sit at a table sloppily applying detail stickers to it. Paint? HAH! You get no paint. You get this. That's a lot of time spent sticking right there. To my credit, I only screwed up two of them, neither of which are visible in Fortress Maximus' battle mode. Keen-eyed fans, however, will notice a major *crag* up in city mode. Anyone out there got a reproduction sheet of Fort Max stickers for sale? For a mere $89.99, Fortress Maximus provided 80s children with an enormous amount of play value. Doors opened, cannons unfolded, ramps lowered, heads became robots with smaller robots for heads. In all three of its modes the figure is amazingly firm and stable — that's not something that can be said for more recent releases in the franchise. He's a joy to play with, though I am 40 now, so I should probably call it tinkering. Screw it, I'm playing with Fortress Maximus, making up for lost time. He's the largest Transformer I've ever owned, at least for the next few months, and his like will not be seen again. Well, until the next Transformers video game comes along and Hasbro gives us a three-foot-tall remake. Fingers crossed!

It looked like any other boring old email. But, as noted by Reddit user Sarranoob, it was anything but. It was an email in disguise. When the email's image isn't uploaded, it reveals an Autobot logo. Sure, this is just marketing, but it's clever marketing. In case you missed it, here is Kotaku's review of Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. Easter egg in mail from Playstation [Reddit]

#transformers When I first discovered the titanic Autobot Metroplex would be making an appearance in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, I experienced a brief rush of excitement — maybe Hasbro would make a new proper Metroplex toy! They'd reused the name for a silly giant from the Transformers: Cybertron line, why not? More »

Hmm, this looks like old news, since the DLC has been out for a bit, but since we are the PC’s premier site for Transformers news, I feel duty-bound to post it: below is a trailer for Fall Of Cybertron‘s Dinobot DLC. As you might expect, it allows you to play the lizardly Transformers in multiplayer. It also contains retro Optimus Prime, insecticons (I think? – I originally mistyped that as “invectobots”, which would a different type of transformer entirely) and some other robo-stuff.

For a transformative opinion on the game’s multiplayer, you can read Alec’s verdict here. He also held forth on the single player.(more…)

Patch Notes

The latest patch includes the following:

GENERAL
• Fix for achievements text
• Updated Credits Movie

MULTIPLAYER
• Changes to Host Migration (patched on server)
• Fix for G1 skins being playable in Multiplayer (patched on server)
• Connectivity Bars in Game now reflect connectivity properly
• Network connectivity support for users who dont have a Router has been enabled
• Scientist is now awarded 1 point on the leaderboard for every 3 full heals in Conquest and Headhunter Multiplayer modes only.

MULTIPLAYER CLASS FIXES/BALANCE
Infiltrator
• Scatterblaster damage increased to 15 per pellet from 12 Those who got early access to the demo know the scatter blaster started off as a beastly weapon, we overshot our correction and were hopeful we've found the right setting.
• Fireblast upgrade burn damage increased from 15 per second to 20 per second The reduction in pellet damage was not being offset enough by the fire damage, so weve upped the fire damage a bit, each shot will do an extra 10 fire damage.
• EMP Intercooler upgrade now changes the grenade recharge to 10 seconds instead of 7.5 We know its super fun to run around throwing emp grenades willy-nilly, but it was too much. Besides, you can get the Intercooler pickup and still go crazy.
Scientist
• Gear Shredder homing increased This weapon is showing up as the weakest of the scientist weapons and we think the best way to improve it is to increase its homing function.
• Sentry Damage increased from 8 to 10 per shot The sentry was not quite giving the offensive boost we were hoping for, this should help.
Destroyer
• Reduce the Thermo Rocket Cannon damage from 300 to 250 - The Destroyer was showing up as the most powerful class by a small margin and we think the Thermo Rocket Cannon is a big reason.
• Chaos Rift Combuster Damage and Damage Radius significantly increased You should be doing closer to 300 damage if you manage to hit a guy with both the initial blast and a cluster bomb. Hopefully this make the Combuster a better option.
• Barrier Cooldown increased from 7 to 10 seconds 7 was too fast, it was practically always available
Titan
• Harvester damage reduced from 20 to 17 This combination of damage output and healing was too much, were preserving the healing functionality and reducing damage.
• EDK Techvolt damage increased to 140 from 115 The beams look cool, but it needed a little more bite.
• Flak Shield can absorb 500 damage instead of 666 The flak shield was showing up as clearly being a better choice than whirlwind so were slightly reducing its power.

More robots will meet the eye in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron multiplayer next week. Game director Matt Tieger told Polygon that a "Dinobot Destructor Pack" is coming on September 11, which will add Dinobots Grimlock, Slug, Snarl, and Swoop to the character creator, for use and customization in the multiplayer mode. The Insecticons will follow, Tieger said.

The Dinobots were originally excluded from multiplayer, as they didn't fit into the existing classes. However, the team tweaked them all to fit into the existing vehicle types while still being Dinobots. "I came in on Monday morning and there was a tyrannosaurus-rex running around in multiplayer," Tieger said. "I have never been happier to have been proven wrong."

Any fun-loving game that goes out of its way to explain the grim origin of a Tyrannosaurus robot - which I'd consider a kind of self-evident narrative atom - deserves a hug. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, you are adorable.

That adjective should slide right off the metallic war machines that inhabit and eventually disintegrate their home planet of Cybertron, but it sticks somehow. Developer High Moon Studios exhibits earnestness in its depiction of a civilization-turning-scrapheap, alongside a mastery of what Unreal Engine 3 is best at: huge, vivid, shiny, exploding stuff. You could probably nitpick the adherence to Transformers canon if it weren't for the distracting fact that most of the characters, err, transform into cannons.

Last week I told you all about Transformers: Fall of Cybertron’s barrage of fanservice that is its singleplayer mode, and now here are some thoughts on its team-based multiplayer.

No posturing Megatron-Optimus stand-offs or piloting of walking cities here: multiplayer is a completely different game, as is so often the case for shooters. While the campaign involves running and blasting easily-dispatched drones as an improbably self-regarding soundtrack booms and familiar faces jabber gags and exposition, FoC’s multiplayer is actually about transforming.(more…)

Stiq Flicks - from film and video game industry freelance writer Kevin Kelly - examines video games and attempts to pair them with matching films. It's like wine and cheese, but with more aliens.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron rolled out this week and while we wouldn't have such a renewed interest in the franchise without the shudder-inducing films of Michael Bay, thankfully there have been other giant robot movies to turn to. Equally as thankful is the fact that High Moon Studios didn't have to tie their game, which is highly enjoyable, into one of Bay's awful films.

When I was working at Jim Henson Pictures, we had a film tentatively titled Giant Robot on our slate, and while it sadly got stuck in development hell (the place where Hollywood projects go to die), working on that script with the writers was one of those perfect geek moments where you get to combine something you love with something you love doing.

We would not have been the first to tackle such a project, with a long line of Japanese films and television shows before us, as well as the cheesy yet enjoyable Robot Jox having preceded us by many years. But what tends to boggle the mind is that with a concept as awesome as a massive robot, the best that the movie industry has been able to give us has until recently been The Iron Giant. Heck, they even fumbled the iconic Japanese Astro Boy, which should have been nigh-impossible. Then again, this is Hollywood we're talking about.

With Guillermo del Toro's awesome Pacific Rim towering on the horizon, and a possible Transformers reboot (albeit still with Michael Bay at the helm) on the way, there are a lot of fighting robots in our future. But as far as circuits and steel pounding it out in the ring, we're highlighting the fun and often overlooked Real Steel to go with Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

I suspect Peter Cullen could tell me he’d just murdered my mother, eaten my cat in a sandwich and set fire to my feet and I’d feel impossibly comforted, just so long as he did it in his Optimus Prime voice. It’s that and many more giant robot-based, entirely unbreakable associations with childhood joy and wonder which means I’m excited to a slightly alarming degree about the sequel to a distinctly average action game. Launch trailer below, and, perhaps more usefully, some details on how to make the previous game, War For Cybertron, a whole lot less bland.(more…)

The Transformers: Fall of Cybertron demo is available now on Xbox Live and will be out later today on PSN when the system updates. The demo features both single and multiplayer modes of cybernetic warfare. The single player mode, sadly, does not let folks try out Dinobot Grimlock, instead placing players in the role of Bumblebee, along with the Decepticon Vortex.

The multiplayer portion features Team Deathmatch and Conquest modes, along with the option to try out the game's character customizer.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will transform into a retail box and roll out August 21.

If you've been waiting to get your hands on the latest Transformers title, the wait is nearly over. Activision has announced that the Transformers: Fall of Cybertron demo should be arriving on Xbox Live and PSN on July 31. Players who download it will be able to play through two single-player missions (High Moon Studios has been showing off two missions starring Bumblebee and Grimlock at various events recently, so odds are it's those two), as well as dip into multiplayer and the in-depth customization system.

And if that's even too long for you, you can preorder the game at GameStop. Customers who preorder the game there are getting access to the demo as soon as, well, now. Imagine this one in your best Peter Cullen voice: Autobots, roll out!
