The honeymoon period for Kickstarter is long over. There are a number of reasons why but perhaps the most impactful is the failure of several high-profile campaigns to deliver what was promised, or going full Darth Vader: ‘We are altering the deal, pray we don’t alter it any further.’ Such drek leads us to Shadowrun Online – a game that was due for release in May 2013, but on March 31 2014 crept onto Steam Early Access, available for sale to non-backers at the princely sum of £25. So what’s going on?

After a bit of a bumpy development, including turning to Kickstarter a year after its announcement and a lengthy delay, Shadowrun Online is slipping on its trenchcoat and mirrorshades to greet the world. Street samurai and shaman throughout The Matrix will get to throw down in turn-based tactical combat come Monday, March 31, when the game will launch via Steam Early Access.

While the full game will have a free-to-play option, Early Access is only for the full paid version which includes all microtransaction doodads for $30 (one imagines it’ll be £20-ish). It’ll be a combat-focused hunk of the game with several co-op missions and a little PvP, but missing a fair few parts. … [visit site to read more]

Shadowrun Online isn't just heading to tablets, smartphones, and computers, it seems. This morning, developer Cliffhanger Productions announced the game as coming to the Ouya, as well as Linux-based systems. Cliffhanger co-founder Michael Paeck is all about the news, saying, "Adding these platforms will make Shadowrun an even better cross-platform experience!"

Beyond allowing more players to get their Shadowrunning on, Paeck explains the cloud-based functionality that'll allow players to "play the game on your tablet, switch to your desktop PC, and then later enjoy it on your Ouya-connected TV - without ever having to switch your account or characters or suffer from restrictions based on your device!"

There's also a new gameplay video which, if we do say so ourselves, is pretty thrilling. Take a peek for yourself above.

Forthcoming tactical combat game Shadowrun Online, which we first looked at here (and not to be confused with the gigantically Kickstarted RPG, Shadowrun Returns) has revealed some early game footage, which they stress is a work-in-progress prototype, and you can see that below. But they too have hit Kickstarter, aiming for a fulsome $500k to fund their work. They’ve also rethought some of their plans about how he game is to be paid for, and are now opting for a model not unlike Guild Wars, as you can see below.(more…)

Last week Cliffhanger let us know that in addition to Jagged Alliance Online, they’re also planning to launch Shadowrun Online as an browser-based RPG. It’s an intriguing project, so we decided it might be an idea to have a chat with Cliffhanger’s Jan Wagner to find out more. You can discover the results of this conversation below, along with the first images from the game itself.(more…)

It's been five years since The Sixth World made its poorly conceived, if occasionally successful, debut on 360 and PC as the competitive, Counter Strike-inspired Shadowrun. In 2012, it appears a return visit to the world of cyber-elves and techno-dwarfs is in order, as Cliffhanger Productions brings the beta of Shadowrun Online to browsers.

As you can see in the early screen above, Cliffhanger has ditched the first-person perspective for something a bit more tactical for its free-to-play project. You and teams of friends will take on the mega corporations in action that one of the game's producers described as "more in the tradition of Baldur's Gate crossed with Jagged Alliance." (It's worth noting that Cliffhanger is also developing Jagged Alliance Online.)

If your curiosity has been piqued, there's a load of additional info in an online Q&A.

[Thanks, William.]

Shadowrun will rise once more.
