We've played bits a Beyond: Two Souls, had some mixed views views on it, talked with Quantic Dream's David Cage about multiplayer 'n how Jodi can visit Davey Jone's locker, but it be arguably two Hollywood actors that pillage closest t' selling me on the PS3 game. Actors be good at that.

Willem Dafoe, who plays scientist Nathan Dawkins, 'n Ellen Page, starring as Jodi, do an excellent job a talking up Beyond here. As do the game clips, t' be fair, switching from Jodi's childhood t' the wench teen 'n adult years, giving glimpses a how the young hero copes with the presence a supernatural companion Aiden. Beyond spans Jodi's life between the ages a 8 'n 23, 'n like Heavy Rain player choices will guide how that life progresses.

Beyond: Two Souls will be one a the last major PS3 games out before the PS4's launch in November, arriving for the current-gen console on October 8 in North America.

No 'game over' in Beyond: Two Souls, but Jodi can visit Davey Jone's locker

There be no "game over" in Beyond: Two Souls - the screen never fades t' black, there's no inspirational quote in sight, 'n, most importantly t' creator David Cage, the story doesn't come t' a complete AVAST!.

"I've always felt that 'game over' be a state a failure more for the game designer than from the player," Cage told me at Gamescom. "it be like creating an artificial loop saying, 'ye didn't play the game the way I wanted ye t' play, so now ye're punished 'n ye're going t' come back 'n play it again until ye do what I want ye t' do.' In an action game, I can pillage that - why not? it be all about skills. But in a story-driven experience it doesn't make any sense."

Instead, Cage said he focused on giving consequences t' failures without hindering the narrative. In one scene, two police officers hunt down Jodi, the protagonist, on a moving passenger train. Jodi be able t' circumvent the officers 'n run away, leading t' an intense standoff on the roof a the speeding train. "Failing" this scene means the cops capture Jodi before she has a chance t' bolt, 'n in the standard video game design scheme, this would mean cut, fade t' black 'n try again. In Beyond, players be given an alternate story path, this time where Jodi be locked in a train car with the officers standing guard, 'n she has t' escape.

Players who "sank" the train scene won't see the rooftop battle, but those who "beat" it won't experience the escape narrative. In at least one a these scenarios, a path can lead t' Jodi's death. This raises a question that humankind has asked itself for eons: What happens when we visit Davey Jone's locker?

"it be a game about death, so ye can imagine that death plays a role in all a this," Cage said. "Actually, it be one a the big discoveries - one a the big mysteries in the game be t' discover what's on the other side. 'n it be definitely not a black screen."

We’re very pleased t' announce the addition t' two more Hollywood greats t' the Beyond: Two Souls production team, with Hans Zimmer 'n Lorne Balfe confirmed as the composers a the game’s soundtrack.

Hans Zimmer needs no introduction, having composed some a the finest Hollywood soundtracks a all time in Gladiator, The Lion King, the Pirates a the Caribbean series 'n (not forgetting) The Rock. 'n working alongside Lorne Balfe, the two a them have been responsible for some a the most memorable soundtracks a late with Inception, Sherlock Holmes 'n all a the recent Dark Knight movies. Lorne himself be also no stranger t' composing for video games, having scored Assassin’s Creed III, Crysis 2 'n Call a Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

It’s a great honor t' have such talented individuals with such storied backgrounds in composing film scores tied t' Beyond: Two Souls. We feel this really does help add another layer t' the incredible way Beyond: Two Souls blurs the lines between cinema 'n gaming. The tension their music brings t' the game be palatable.

Keep yer eyes peeled for a lot more news coming in the next couple weeks.

"We believe that with the addition a Ellen Page, Willem Dafoe, 'n now Hans Zimmer with the soundtrack - we be really looking for the best, most talented people out there t' create the emotion in Beyond, 'n we have a beautiful soundtrack in the game," Cage said.

During that panel, Cage revealed multiplayer for Beyond, including a free app that turns touchscreen devices into controllers, intended t' make the AAA game less intimidating t' casual players.

Beyond: Two Souls puts on it be warpaint

The Beyond: Two Souls demo I played at E3 featured protagonist Jodie Holmes as a CIA operative, undergoing a perilous mission in the war-torn streets a Somalia. Quite how Jodie 'n the wench accompanying supernatural entity 'Aiden' came t' this point be unclear, 'n that be fine; Quantic Dream has a curious life story in mind for it be unusual heroine, 'n this be a mere portion a the game's ten or so hours.

Still, it be jarring. Heavy Rain often placed itself in the more normal, human situations that games tend t' avoid. While it had it be share a action, those sequences be smaller parts a bigger scenes, 'n not necessarily what defined them. In contrast, Beyond's Somalia demo offered 20 minutes a war-based intensity, 'n at times it outwardly resembled the medium's bevy a military shooters. It be weird.

BEYOND: Two Souls – Gameplay from E3 2013

AHOY PlayStation gamers,

So far this year, we’ve put a lot a focus on BEYOND: Two Souls’ cinematic presentation 'n powerfully emotional storytelling – we’ve revealed Willem Dafoe as Ellen Page’s co-star, debuted a beautifully cinematic story trailer, 'n even revealed a full scene from the game at Tribeca Film Festival t' show ye just how groundbreaking BEYOND: Two Souls aims t' be. The “Interactive Drama” genre be a bit a a unique concept though, 'n one a the consistent questions we’ve received from those a ye who missed out on experiencing Heavy Rain be: “BEYOND looks like it has a fantastic story, but how does it play?!”

During yesterday’s press conference, we debuted our E3 trailer.

Today, I stepped up on the stage in our E3 booth t' give a guided walkthrough a a portion a the Somalia scene t' carefully illustrate these gameplay mechanics in action. We’ve created a short video t' more clearly explain these mechanics, 'n provided written descriptions below as well.

Increased Direct Control a Jodie

BEYOND: Two Souls features much larger 'n more open environments than those found in Heavy Rain, 'n t' coincide with this, the gamer will have much more freedom t' explore their surroundings 'n find small side bits a information. The “R2 t' walk” control scheme from Heavy Rain be gone as well – now, navigation with Jodie be controlled entirely using the left analog stick.

As ye navigate these environments, the camera will dynamically change t' more cinematic angles, 'n Jodie’s animations will tailor themselves t' the wench age 'n situation, leading t' a uniquely immersive 'n filmic experience. All a the videos ye’ve seen us release thus far be in fact entirely user-controlled; it’s just difficult t' distinguish without the controller in yer hand.

9003782551_6964a012f3_z.jpg

Contextual, Prompt-less Interactivity 'n Choice

One a the most exciting new developments in BEYOND: Two Souls be the much smoother interaction UI. In Heavy Rain, every time ye wanted t' interact with an object or perform an action, a button prompt would appear on-screen. In BEYOND: Two Souls we decided t' implement a more “invisible” interface:

Jodie’s actions will be now prompted with a small white dot that appears over each object ye can interact with. Then, through a simple gesture a the right analog stick, ye will enable Jodie t' perform a contextual interaction such as opening a door or inspecting a piece a writing on the wall. The new interface be extremely intuitive for both new 'n existing fans alike, 'n the contextual actions allow for an array a movements 'n actions that make Jodie feel more like a living, breathing character.

By granting players control over Jodie’s conversations 'n actions, it also empowers the player t' change the evolution a the story in a number a exciting 'n different ways.

9003916443_8a68cf1ab8_z.jpg

Revamped Prompt-Less Action Sequences

In keeping with the theme a eliminating jarring button prompts 'n creating a more immersive 'n cinematic experience, prompts have also been removed from action sequences involving Jodie. Rather than button prompts on-screen, the entire combat system has been replaced with a slow-motion (also called “bullet-time” since The Matrix) gesture mechanic based on the right analog stick.

At various action points during each fight, the action on-screen will change t' slow-motion 'n greyscale for a split second, 'n during that time ye will need t' quickly analyze the action 'n input a gesture with the right analog stick. This gesture will need t' be the continuation a Jodie’s on-screen movement (e.g. if Jodie initiates a punch t' the left on-screen, ye will need t' hit left on the right analog, thus completing the wench action). The tension runs high as Jodie’s success or failure in each action sequence depends on quick 'n accurate reflexes.

9004959850_692e28ff48_z.jpg

Entity Gameplay 'n Collaboration

Last, but not least, a the new gameplay ye’ll experience in BEYOND: Two Souls be taking control a Aiden, the entity connected t' Jodie. At any point in the game, ye can switch between Jodie 'n Aiden at a simple touch a the Triangle button. Using both Jodie 'n Aiden together will be critical for both protecting Jodie 'n solving puzzles Jodie comes across during the wench journey, as well as gaining additional insight into the characters’ stories.

When controlling Aiden, navigation be controlled using the left analog stick t' move forward/backward/side-t'-side, the right analog t' rotate, 'n the shoulder buttons t' control altitude. Aiden be only restricted in it be movement by the tether that keeps it connected t' Jodie, 'n can fly through or around any matter in the environment. Aiden has the ability t' interact with people 'n objects by locking on with L1 'n then either pulling the glowing orbs in or away from the target, allowing it t' choke people (red aura), possess 'n control them (yellow aura), 'n blast objects with invisible force.

9004959776_450d843e55_z.jpg

BEYOND: Two Souls truly does feature a unique brand a gameplay, which creates a fun 'n engaging way t' experience one a gaming’s most powerful stories.

What the game be a course NOT though, be just a series a cinematics with minimal gameplay in between. If ye’re at E3, be sure t' come by our booth 'n try it for yourself!

Pre-order here, 'n remember that pre-ordering at GameStop will pillage ye a nice package a exclusive goodies too.

ye're Going t' Deliver a Baby—'n Attempt Suicide—in This PS3 Game

David Cage be nervous last Saturday night. 'n with good reason. There he be, about t' unveil a sizable chunk a Beyond: Two Souls in front a a packed house at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. This be only the second time that a video game be shown at the annual celebration a cinema founded by Robert DeNiro. (Rockstar showed L.A. Noire at the festival a few years ago.) So, YARRRR, it be a big deal. Over the next half-hour, gameplay footage—it wasn’t clear whether this be being played live or be pre-recorded—showed a segment a the game where Beyond heroine Jodie Holmes be living on the street. After a grim sequence where she stumbles around in a blizzard 'n passes out, Jodie wakes up in an abandoned warehouse after being rescued by a homeless man. ye can see what happens in the entire 35-minute preview from Tribeca above. I'll list some highlights if ye don’t watch the whole thing. Early on, an emotionally spent Jodie tries t' kill herself. Aiden—the disembodied essence that players can control 'n that Jodie communicates with—stops the wench. Later on, Jodie begs for change 'n gets harassed by a salty dog on the street who offers t' give the wench $10 “t' go ‘round back.” After the wench first day on the street comes t' an end, she meets Tuesday, a pregnant woman squatting with the other homeless people in the warehouse. Tuesday hadn't felt baby kick in days but Jodie assured the wench—with some help from Aiden, it seemed—that the baby be still alive. 'n, just before the climax a the demo that be shown, Jodie helps deliver that baby. Begging for spare change. Delivering babies. These be not the kinds a things that ye do in most big-budget video games. On one hand, it seems like Beyond be telling a somewhat conventional genre fiction story about a young wench with special talents who winds up working for the military. Those be tropes we’ve seen before. The chunk a Beyond shown at the screening did have combat sequences, dialogue decisions, environmental puzzle-solving 'n other elements that feel typical t', say, a Halo or Uncharted title. But that just makes the more realistic elements stand out more. “I be interested in putting ye in the shoes a someone living in the streets,” Cage told me. “This be something that some films have done before but very few games try that. I think it’s important t' do it in games because ye actually can experience much more a what it means, because it’s ye, ye’re in control 'n ye lead that. We just saw one walk-thru, one possibility, but there be many ways ye can play this scene 'n see different aspects a living in the street." I asked Cage if he had any concerns about portraying people who be achingly poor 'n on the fringes a society. Did he worry about any kind a backlash? “These be not the kind a questions that I ask myself when I write,” he answered. “I write things that move me. ye don’t even have the choice a what ye’re writing. ye write what ye need t' write.” So why did he need t' write that scene? “I don’t know,” he began. “Because I’ve been moved many times by the people living in the street 'n the indifference around them, 'n how difficult it be t' live outside. One a the strong memories that I have about that be actually in New York. I be here 20 or 25 years ago, 'n I saw that it be really cold. Incredibly cold. It be minus 40 degrees Celsius.” “I had a big coat 'n I be still really cold. I saw a woman with a kid 'n she be in the street 'n she didn’t have me big coat,” he continued. “It be freezing cold. These be the kinds a images that haunt ye for the rest a yer life. ye really wonder what happened t' the wench 'n the wench kid, if they even survived. This be why ye need t' write these kind a things.” "I be interested in putting ye in the shoes a someone living in the streets." 'n the childbirth scene? “When ye write, yer first audience be yourself. I’m not the first one t' say this,” he told me. “ye try t' create a very unique moment, something that will be strong 'n emotional 'n moving. If it works for ye as the first audience, ye always hope that it’s going t' work for others, too. We had a very strong response from the people who saw this part a the game, 'n they said how emotional 'n moving it be. This be really what I’m looking for.” "ye try t' create a very unique moment, something that will be strong 'n emotional 'n moving." If ye’ve been following the promotion around Beyond, then ye might have noticed that it’s not going t' be as sprawling as Heavy Rain. In that game, ye would pass the story along t' another character depending on various choices 'n events. But, Cage told me that players will control Jodie 'n Aiden all the way through. “I be fascinated by telling the story a someone through 15 years in their life—as a kid, as a teenager, as an adult— 'n seeing how the different events in the wench life would make the wench who she becomes. At the same time, there’s Aiden, who’s this continuing presence. ye play Jodi at different ages. so she looks different. She moves differently 'n talks differently. She has access t' different things in different situations.” “me goal with Beyond be t' create a strong sense a empathy between the player 'n the character a Jodi Holmes because she will become someone ye will know by heart,” Cage continued. “ye be there when she be a kid. ye know what she went through. ye’ve been there with the wench in the happy 'n difficult moments a the wench life. me hope be by the time ye turn off yer console 'n ye’re done with the game, ye really feel like ye’re saying goodbye t' someone close that ye really like.” When Cage made his comments about turning off the console, I wondered about the next game machine coming from Sony. Beyond: Two Souls be the kind a game where, at some point. ye’re going t' have plot twists that players may want t' share with each other. Like, here’s what I did, “I actually jumped off the bridge 'n Jodi’s dead.” Or, “Or I didn’t save Jimmy, he burnt t' death.” I asked Cage he be worried about what a share button could do, in terms a how it could affect the uniqueness a the experiences for the player. Would he want t' turn that function off or have it not t' be shareable? Would something like the PS4’s share button change how he 'n his Quantic Dream peers design their games? “No, it doesn’t scare me at all,” he laughed heartily. “We want that ‘water cooler effect’. We had it on Heavy Rain. People talked about it, 'n they said, “I did this. What did ye do?” The only difference be that now they will be able t' capture 'n share it with their mateys. That’s fine. People bought the game. They be free t' enjoy it the way they want. But me recommendation would be t' really play the game on yer own, hopefully without going back 'n talking too much t' other people as ye play. Just keep the experience unique.” Speaking a PS4, Cage’s Quantic Dream colleague Guillaume de Fondaumière let me know that they’ve been working with a version a Sony’s next-gen hardware for a while now. “We started t' work on Playstation 4 more than two years ago. It did influence our developments on Playstation 3 actually on Beyond. We be now at the point where ye can see the possibilities a that console after two years a programming on it. We be really surprised t' which levels we can push things from a graphical standpoint,” Fondaumière told me. “There will be quite an important gap between what we be showing here on Beyond 'n what be really possible sometime soon on Playstation 4, which be a really, really powerful machine.” "There will be quite an important gap between what we be showing here on Beyond 'n what be really possible sometime soon on Playstation 4..." Aside from graphics, one a the other big takeaways from Sony’s PlayStation event in February be the importance a connectivity. Does the emphasis on social experiences mean that Quantic Dream might make a multiplayer game or a game where there’s a collaboration between players? How will PS4 make them evolve the game design? “It’s too early t' talk really about what this next project be. But what’s certain be, YARRRR, everything be open today. Everything be connected. There’s a new controller. We need t' look at this new controller’s functionality 'n adapt gameplay t' it. But we also need t' see these new connectivities. We need t' find a way t' embrace, not only the available technologies, but also the new habits a players. Yeah, we’re thinking a lot about it right now.” “One a the features a the Playstation 4 controller be the touchpad, for instance. These new features be very interesting t' us because we think that we would like t' bring casual gamers or occasional gamers or even people who don’t play at all t' the medium,” he said. “I think we can only do that through what I would say be non-conventional gaming paradigms. The controller has always been t' a certain extent a barrier t' those non-gamers t' jump into the gaming space. We’ve seen more 'n more people embracing gaming through those mobile devices. That’s something else that we’re watching very, very carefully. We’ll see in the future what this means.” At the PS4 reveal a few months ago, Cage showed a glimpse a the new engine that Quantic Dream be developing. But, he wants t' make sure that people understand something: “The technology be a tool. That’s what I tried t' explain.” “It’s not because ye have better tech that suddenly ye will create something much more meaningful 'n interesting” he continued. “No. It’s a tool. If ye have something t' sell, t' say, t' explain, t' express, 'n ye have a better tool t' do it, ye will create something better. But if ye have nothing t' say, ye can have the best tech in the world, ye still won’t say anything.”

CNET editor Dan Ackerman shared this picture a the Beyond: Two Souls script today. The conglomeration a all the spoken dialogue for Quantic Dream’s upcoming playable drama looks bigger than a stack a PS3s. 'n not the new Super Slim PS3s. I’m talking the original husky models. Sony probably sent out the script because it be upcoming game will be featured at the Tribeca Film Festival. I’ve often heard game scripts as being described as more like spreadsheets, since they have branching dialogue 'n different spoken prompts. That may be the case but, still 'n all, that be one vast ream a paper.
