It's been six months since bouncing baby PS4s and Xbox Ones started landing on doorsteps, and things are still... transition-y. Titanfall runs great on Xbox 360, Borderlands is staying last-gen, and PS4 is getting a Last of Us port. What do you think? Are you optimistic, or are you regretting your purchase?Read more...

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt isn’t strutting down the beardwalk until 2015. Boooooo. But we shall save mourning for another day, as there is work to be done and questions to be asked. After all, CD Projekt isn’t just a Witcher factory anymore. It’s also working on Cyberpunk 2077 and a couple mysterious “smaller” games. When Geralt – CDP’s clear ace-in-the-hole – gets shuffled back into the deck, what does that mean for everybody else? I got in touch with CD Projekt to find out.

It was all going to be so simple. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was set to come out toward the end of 2014, and I was going to tear into it like a ravenous wolf cub, all fur and fang and aggression, no hesitation or 9-5 desk job or mortgages I should be worrying about. But that, sadly, is no longer the plan. CD Projekt’s open-ish world opus has been pushed into 2015. It’s all in the name of making the best game possible, but… oh jeez what is this entire freshly sliced onion doing in my eye? It’s getting in the way of all that bitter sobbing over The Witcher 3 I was going to do.

The day that everyone’s been eagerly awaiting is finally upon us. After years of suffering through CD Projekt’s childish “videogame” machinations, The Witcher is assuming its proper place on sturdy, grown-up tables the world over. The Witcher Adventure Game – which is not a Witcher adventure game – is a four-player role-based romp through the series’ witchy wilds. All the trademarks are in place: recognizable characters, quests with choices and multiple outcomes, and – yes, thank the heavens – Geralt’s beard. Trailer and info on how all these jagged jigsaw pieces fit together below.

We’ve no new Witcher 3 videos of late, but if you scroll through these really, really quickly, it’ll be just like watching a low frame rate, abysmally edited video. Make some sword-swooshing noises as you do it, for added effect. The genesis and/or novelty of these 65 1080p screenshots of CDP’s next massive roleplaying game is somewhat indeterminate at present, but I’m sure a good number of them will be fresh to your eyes. PCs with low memory should perhaps be wary of this doubtless RAM-hungry post.(more…)

Of the many, many games I have seen this year, The Witcher 3 stands out as just ridiculously ambitious, as I explained in this article. If you want to get a handle on just what a challenge CD Projekt’s Polish RPG commandos have set for themselves, you should take a look at the presentation they gave at the Eurogamer Expo last weekend. I’m not saying this game is definitely going to flatten the RPG opposition in the coming years – because they are biting off what only a monster can truly chew – but I can’t see any other icebergs as ominous or as enormous as this one.(more…)

The rise and rise of CDP has been a remarkable thing to watch. What we’re seeing is a studio spooling up to full power. The enormous ambition of The Witcher failed to really hit its mark, but the intention was clear. The even greater ambition of The Witcher 2 revealed CDP to be an RPG creator that was hitting its stride, as well as achieving its ambitions, and now the third game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, threatens to outshine an entire industry with its technical and artistic prowess. Full power, I suspect, has been reached.

There’s every reason for scepticism at this early, hype-manufacturing stage, but what we saw at Gamescom this year suggests that The Witcher 3 could be the most important mainstream game of 2014. If nothing else the rather blunt claim of “a world thirty-five times the size of The Witcher 2″ should get our attention.(more…)

It’s sort of difficult to understand why a game as good looking as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would rely on a CGI trailer, because it’s simply doesn’t need it. Do these things even sell games? I know I buy because of the way the game looks when it plays, but do people get excited by story shine? I mean, it’s is really, really well done, but…(more…)

The Witcher developer CD Projekt RED announced today it has opened a new studio in Cracow...Krakow?...the city with two K sounds prior to a -ra and -ow, Poland. Spelling confusions aside, the new studio will support the Warsaw studio's development of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.

"We want to continue to make better and better RPGs and the new studio is another big step in that direction. Cracow, one of the cultural and scientific centers of Europe, is a really special place that will leave a significant mark on our games," said Adam Badowski, Head of CD Projekt RED.

Cyberpunk 2077 could launch in 2077 for all we know at this point. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is tracking Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC for a 2014 launch.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has partnered with CD Projekt Red to assume promotional and distribution duties in North America for open-world fantasy game The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt.

Due sometime in 2014 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt is the final entry in the current Witcher trilogy, though CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kicinski has affirmed the "franchise will be continued." While multiplayer was initially a consideration, it was eventually abandoned along with the quick-time events seen in previous Witcher games.

Odds bodkins! The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is pretty and make no mistake (the last time screenshots came out they were pretty enough to make Jim swear, but I told my mum I was on RPS this week so I’m not allowed to). It’s blooming pretty as a picture, and my codlings are tingling. They’d better festinate this game out ASAP, I don’t want to be sat here rod-jockeying while I’m waiting for it to arrive. Say hello to my mum, everyone!(more…)

Geralt’s hit the big time. He’s got his own open world, a handsomely haggard beard, and a simultaneous launch across multiple “next-gen” platforms. It’s the latter, however, that could spell his undoing – or at least make his witchy charms a lot less bewitching for a sizable portion of PC gamers. Console-makers, after all, aren’t too terribly fond of free updates, but CD Projekt’s modus operandi is handing them out like candy. Microsoft, meanwhile, has decided that draconian DRM is back in this season, and CDP’s been fighting on the opposite side of that battle for ages. Who will survive? Well, probably everyone, because we’re only talking about DLC for a videogame. But, if nothing else, PC gamers don’t need to worry. CD Projekt head Marcin Iwinski assured me that it’ll be business as usual for Witcher 3 updates on our platform of choice, even if consoles aren’t so lucky.

The Witcher series of action role-playing games is reaching further than ever before, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launching simultaneously on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014. The new consoles have been mired in discussion over DRM (digital rights management) recently, with Microsoft instituting connectivity requirements to play games, and PlayStation leaving publishers to decide how to control the sale and resale of their content. The Polish developer behind The Witcher, CD Projekt RED, now tries to find an ideal incarnation for its publicly asserted values, which are staunchly opposed to DRM of any kind.

"I can only talk about our intentions; we don't have any agreement finalized yet," CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński tells me, carefully choosing his words. "It's all quite early and we're finding out about it this week, at the conference. But our intention, obviously, is to choose the most gamer-friendly solution." In CD Projekt's perfect world, those solutions would be aligned with their PC- and Mac-based digital distribution platform, GOG.com, where games are 100 percent DRM-free. "Whatever the solutions will be for our partners, we choose something ideally as close to what we have on GOG as possible."

Few major developers could be as publicly anti-DRM as CD Projekt Red, makers of the Witcher series. Yet there they were with The Witcher 3, getting a good five minutes of stage time with the Xbox One, the face of console DRM going forward. The studio is committed to releasing on Xbox One but none too happy about being in such a bind. To Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red said it doesn't know yet how it will handle a publisher who doesn't allow The Witcher 3 to be re-sold—probably because the game does not yet have a publisher. But CD Projekt Red runs Good Old Games, which makes a big selling point out of having no DRM, and there are few studios publishing titles of this size that have such a visible anti-DRM stance. Eurogamer says they're bristling at the guilt-by-association from appearing at Microsoft's event. "We couldn't simply not release The Witcher 3 on Xbox One," CEO Marcin Iwiński told Eurogamer. "We want to make sure that every single player will have access to our game and thus decided to deliver for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. There are people who don't mind the DRM protection and will pick Xbox One as their platform of choice. We can't punish them." Earlier, he said that "if you want the 100 per cent DRM-free experience you will have it on the PC, the platform where we set the rules for our games. The Witcher 3 will be available 100 per cent DRM-free on our digital distribution platform GOG.com, and that's one thing I can confirm." There is scant information about there about Lords Of The Fallen, even though it was first announced (as Project RPG) a year ago. The game from The Deck 13, headed by former CD Projekt Red dev Tomasz Gop, doesn’t have a website, nor even an entry in secret industry tome Gamespress. Yet the game that people seem to be pitching as a rival to The Witcher 3 has managed to produce some screenshots despite it all.
