Lanning talks Oddworld New 'n' Tasty budget, Exoddus remake potential, pricing
eurogamer.net posted by GoNintendo Mar 18 2014 03:03 GMT in Nintendo Stuff

The following comes from a Eurogamer interview with Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning...

- needs to sell 250K copies of New 'n' Tasty to fund a remake of Abe's Exoddu
- selling more will help fund an all new Oddworld game after that
- this new game would be likely if New 'n' Tasty shifts half a million units

"If I'm doing a new Oddworld game, I'm not going to do it for $2 million. I might do it for five or six. People keep asking me, 'Why don't you Kickstart Oddworld? You could get at least $1 or $2 million.' And I'm like 'What would I do with a couple million on Kickstarter? On a new Oddworld title?' Not much. I could redo Exoddus for a couple million. I could do that. But a new title, which means new characters doing new things and controls that are great - that's where the real time and expenses come from. If you already have the game and you're just doing a conversion, it's easier. From scratch, I don't think we could do an Oddworld title for a couple million dollars. ...But no matter what, Exoddus would come first. And then we'd get into expansion packs for those titles."

Oddworld New 'n' Tasty has cost nearly $5 million to make with about $2 million coming out of Lanning's pocket.

"This game will play better, look better, and you'll have more fun with for more hours of play than games you're paying $60 for. That's a promise. And I can say that with absolute confidence. If this had a publisher, the price would be higher and they'd be calling in triple A."

Ether One looks like a peaceful romp through dementia patients' minds
joystiq.com posted by Joystiq Mar 18 2014 03:00 GMT in Steam

Ether One seems like a nice, calm exploration game - until it doesn't. Most of the gameplay takes place in the memories of dementia patients, where skilled Restorers repair broken images and minds. Restoration is a standard task in this technologically advanced world, but it retains the potential to go horribly wrong. And as the launch trailer shows, things do go wrong.

Really wrong.

Ether One is a first-person exploration and adventure game that recalls BioShock or Portal in its mechanics and unmistakable "something is not right here" tone. It was Greenlit in June and is due out for PC on March 25 from UK studio White Paper Games. [Images: White Paper Games]

inFAMOUS Second Son: Ruthless vs. Heroic Gameplay

In inFAMOUS Second Son, your gameplay style and moral choices influence your superhuman powers in profound ways. If you’re a goodie two-shoes when using your Neon powers, you’ll be able to briefly slow time while zooming in for precise shots — crucial for pegging foes in their legs and immobilizing them. If you play as a power-drunk renegade, you’ll want to kill enemies in rapid succession to keep your combo meter growing, which unlocks new abilities more quickly.

We’ve invited two community members to take a shot at playing the game in two different ways. Below, YouTube raconteur whiteboy7thst takes you through the finer points of the Ruthless playstyle, while Minecraft kingpin HojjoshMC shares his Heroic experiences.

You've played Bravely Default. Now...would you say the game has anything in it that promotes pedophilia? I'm guessing you would say no, but that's not the case in Saudi Arabia. We're hearing that the title has been banned from retailers due to promotion of pedophilia, as well as "sexual promiscuity in children". We'll follow up on this to get more details.

The online-only, free-to-play shooter Ghost Recon Online has ditched its redundant subtitle for something a little more bomb, yo. Ghost Recon: Phantoms will launch on PC via Steam in April, publisher Ubisoft has announced.

"With all the changes the game has undergone since its conception, the team felt it deserved a 'fresh identity," Producer Corey Facteau explained in a Q&A post. Its arrival in April as Phantoms will end the game's 21-month-long beta phase, add new visual flair and continue the franchise's showcase of "a realistic depiction of tomorrow's battlefield."

Along with its new level design and lighting, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Phantoms also features new character classes, fresh gear, and plans for "even more" additional content following its official launch next month. [Images: Ubisoft, Dean Koontz, Paramount Pictures, Our Hearts]

Xbox Chief Product Officer Marc Whitten has left Microsoft for a job as Chief Product Officer of Sonos, a home audio company.

Whitten had been with Microsoft since 2000 and helped launch the original Xbox, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. In the announcement post on Xbox Wire, Whitten said the following:

"I have had the extreme pleasure over the last 14 years to work on the greatest product with the greatest team and for the greatest community. Xbox is so special because of the amazing team I've had the opportunity to work with and because our fans are the most incredible fans on the planet. It has been the highlight of my career to work on a product so loved. It's incredibly tough to leave but I am confident the best days are ahead for Xbox fans, in the capable hands of a very talented team."

The remaining Xbox team leadership will remain intact, the post said, and Whitten's team will now report to Software EVP Terry Myerson.
