Playing like nobody's watching in The Stanley Parable

The Stanley Parable casts you as a nondescript soul in a nondescript office building. From this mundane beginning emerges a skewed story of a man making choices, both small and serious, and a player expressing their importance in a video game. It's clearly a thoughtfully considered, deliberately tuned and - what's that? "We didn't actually think about this when we were designing the game"? So said William Pugh, one of the designers behind The Stanley Parable, the first-person adventure game that initially took form as a Half-Life 2 mod. Davey Wreden, creator of the original version in 2011, shared the stage with Pugh in a candid analysis of their game during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

News of the now: there is a newish Deus Ex game on Steam. Deus Ex: The Fall is a conversion of the mobile game from a few years back, one that did an okay job of squeezing down to be prodded and poked at by commuters. I warn you, despite being a slice of Human Revolution-esque Deus Ex, the launch trailer below makes it look pretty bad. Better augment your eyes before watching.

Metareview: Metal Gear Solid 5 - Ground Zeroes

Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes is the amuse bouche of the bigger (and hopefully better) The Phantom Pain, which should sneak into stores sometime between October and the birth of standardized nanotechnology. Our review of this carved out experience called it "too good to be a cash-in, too calculated to be satisfying and too intriguing to spurn."

If you want to see what all the la-li-lu-le-lo is about, check out our Joystiq Streams this Thursday at 4PM ET and watch our own Anthony John Agnello (@ajohnagnello) play it for the first time.

Head past the break to see what others think of the Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain prologue.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch breaks 90K sales ahead of PS4 launch
octodadgame.com posted by Joystiq Mar 18 2014 19:30 GMT in PC Gaming News

Paternal poser Octodad: Dadliest Catch sold more than 90,000 copies on PC, Mac, and Linux since its launch in January, which means it also passed the octomark of 88,888 sales, and that's grand, too. Developer Young Horses is ecstatic with the sales figures, and president Phil Tibitoski said "our expectations have been met and then some to say the least."

"Our Kickstarter funds for Octodad went towards some business costs and conference booths," Tibitoski wrote on the game's blog. "Outside of that our 9 person team at Young Horses worked on Octodad: Dadliest Catch for free for 2.5 years while holding other full-time jobs. Our hopes were that we would make back the amount of money that we felt our time was worth and be given the opportunity to bring forth from our noodly noggins other weird stuff for our next game."

"This puts us in a position where we've been able to pay ourselves back for our time spent AND continue to pay ourselves in the future," he added on Twitter. "We no longer have day jobs, and it's looking like we'll get to make another game. Mission Accomplished."

The tentacular concept for Dadliest Catch is controlling an octopus who's trying to hide the fact he's not human. Not only is he not what he seems, but he's also a father with a lot to do, and you have to try and help him complete the challenges of daily life. We say try, but what we really mean is watch him sprawl around like a, well, octopus in human's clothing.

Dadliest Catch is expected to arrive on PS4 next month, with Move support adding to the mayhem. There's no word yet on a concrete release date. [Image: Young Horses]
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes Out Today

Snake moves across the dirt and rock with immaculate care, crawling in silence as rain soaks his suit. He blends into the darkness, and the passing chopper screeches overhead in ignorance of his trespassing. As the camera pans to reveal his face, each wrinkle on his brow betrays his great military experience and troubled past. But this is just another mission for the iconic hero, who returns to PlayStation today in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes for PS3 and PS4.

Following the events of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes finds Big Boss infiltrating a military compound in Cuba, with a mission to extract two high-value targets before they’re executed… or worse. Ground Zeroes establishes the initial story arc that will continue in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Think of Ground Zeroes as an appetizer to the main course.

The talented team at Kojima Productions have worked marvels on PS4, lending a breath-taking sense of realism to Ground Zeroes and the characters therein. The character models and animation have reached new heights for the series, while the large military base brims with detail, both large and small. Rain lashes down from the night sky in gouts, mechanized gates groan into motion as claxons blare, and the distant whir of an approaching jeep motor can send even an experienced player into a panic.

13230812545_efaa26812a_n.jpg13230812305_c64cbb423d_n.jpg

Special attention has been spent on Ground Zeroes’ controls, enabling players to move, crawl, dive, roll, and fight in fluid succession. In classic Metal Gear tradition, much of the fun comes from learning the behaviors of the soldiers on the base, and finding the best ways to deceive or dispatch them.

Snake has several tools for doing just that, including his trusty tranquilizer pistol, as well as a host of weapons on the base he can procure, from shotguns to rifles. Metal Gear fans will relish the return of other series standards, like engrossing radio chatter and a story steeped in intrigue. Although Ground Zeroes is but a taste of the full Metal Gear Solid V experience, it provides rich insight into Kojima’s future project.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes launches today for PS3 and PS4.

Miegakure is a 4-dimensional puzzle game. What this means is that I am going to struggle to convey exactly what playing it entails. That’s not to say that the game’s designer, Marc Ten Bosch, has made something alienating or overly intellectual. It’s a warm, funny, deeply intelligent game, which I was pleased to have the opportunity play on the periphery of this year’s GDC.

I think it could be very important indeed.

Nocturnal talks Flowerworks HD: Follie's Adventure added features, release dates, future Wii U/3DS support

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with Nocturnal's Michael Shamgar...

NL: Are there plans to add more content in future?

MS: There is every chance we could add more content in the future.

Flowerworks is a long game though - it still takes me around 15-20hrs to totally finish it (and I have been playing it solidly for 5 years!). So I think it's more likely we could add extra features to the game in the future (Miiverse, online leaderboards, improved graphics) and leave the new content for another game.

NL: We understand the release is likely to arrive in North America before Europe; do you have estimated release windows for each region?

MS: It's going through submission now for a US release - so I think late March or April is likely. Europe is likely to be another month or two after that.

Speaking of which - I think it's unlikely that we'll ever release in Australia again, which is pretty sad given we are based there. Getting a game rated in Australia is a slow and expensive process, which is a real pity. A lot of other rating agencies now have special categories for small, downloadable titles: it literally took 5 minutes to get our ERSB rating the US - and it was free!

NL: Are you planning future projects for the Wii U or even the 3DS?

MS: For Nocturnal on the Wii U, everything now depends on how well Flowerworks HD does. Because the devkits are on loan, we need to purchase them if we are to continue with development. And new games are expensive to make, regardless of how simple they are.
So I would like to see Flowerworks hit certain sales targets before we commit to additional projects. Again, I'm optimistic and I think it's definitely doable - but we can't commit until it actually happens.

Assuming it does happen, there are lots of potential future projects. There is an epic RPG (which is almost finished) that I would love to bring to the Wii U. There is a sequel to a game (that I'm sure no one reading has ever heard of!) - "Timegap-X" - which is one of the games I worked on 20 years ago for the Microbee. Think open 2D world, with 3D graphics and a cross between Gradius & Metroid. There are also some pipeline projects designed around the GamePad, that would be impossible on rival consoles.
And a few other projects I don't want to talk about now, but are potentially much larger scope and would involve community and collaboration. So no shortage of ideas really!
As for the 3DS, I don't think we have capacity at the moment.
