Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars dev talks sales, no definite Wii U/3DS plans, but Chaos Reborn could come over

A portion of a Nintendo Life interview with developer Julian Gollop...

Nintendo Life: Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars was one of the undisputed gems of the 3DS launch lineup. Were you happy with the critical and commercial performance of the title?

Julian Gollop: I was very happy with the critical reception for GRSW, given the tight deadlines we had and the limitations of the Nintendo dev kits until shortly before the launch of the console. It was the second highest rated launch title for the 3DS on Metacritic, which is no small achievement. The commercial performance was not so good, largely because the launch of the 3DS was underwhelming, and only corrected by a price drop some time later.

NL: Do you have plans for any other 3DS titles — retail or download?

Julian Gollop: No, although I would have loved to have continued working on the 3DS. I have always loved the Nintendo handhelds ever since I got my Gameboy in 1989, and I am glad the 3DS is now doing really well.

NL: Rebelstar Tactical Command is another Nintendo title of yours, and follows on from one of your earlier hits, Rebelstar Raiders. What was it like working on the Game Boy Advance? Have you ever considered making the game available on the 3DS?

Julian Gollop: Working on the Game Boy Advance was great — although very challenging for our relatively complex little strategy game. We never quite got the frame rate fast enough, but the game was playable. I am quite proud of what we achieved, and it was made in 8 months with no previous experience developing on the GBA. I have never considered making it available for the 3DS though — Namco, the publisher, holds the rights. We did start work on a sequel which was originally destined for the DS, but Namco wanted to change platform to PSP and the project never got off the ground.

NL: What are your thoughts on the Wii U? Are you working on anything for that platform at the moment?

Julian Gollop: I was a great fan of the Wii, but I am less sure about the Wii U, although I would like to see it do well. I don't have any plans to do anything for it right now, but that could change.

NL: Do you have any plans to bring Chaos Reborn to the Wii U or 3DS eShop?

Julian Gollop: Not at the moment, but if the game is successful, then it may become possible.

Part II introduces new artist Reven into the fold as she and Rozen tackle the more sensitive side of Majora’s Mask. A contrast to the first half, the sweeping melodies of Part II dwell on the heart-wrenching scene of Kafei’s return to Anju and their decision to stay in Clock Town no matter the outcome. Fans of the game will recognize snippets of several themes from the series as the piece builds to its awaited conclusion: the end of the world…or the dawn of a new day.

A portion of a NE interview with Nic Watt of Nnooo...

NE: escapeVektor was originally planned as the first part of a larger series. Are there still any plans to develop a sequel? How well did the 3DS/Vita versions perform?

NW: The ideas of the other games are still there and we would love to return to the series. I think if we did we would have to address how to make them more marketable and less abstract so as to attract a wider audience. Each game in the series is very well thought out already so you never know what the future might bring!

NE: What are your thoughts on the current Nintendo eShop? Does it give indie games enough visibility?

NW: I think the eShop, like most digital store fronts is satisfactory. The way Nintendo highlight and group products as well as changing them on a weekly basis is definitely better than most digital stores. However I think that we are in a transition state where previously physical stores would be nice places to visit with big displays of popular content and then aisles of older content grouped by genre or category.

I used to love spending time in music stores and the way Virgin and HMV in the UK used to group and highlight content was amazing. They had a main area of their store dedicated to the most popular content and then other areas with more niche content. But even in the niche areas they would spend time having displays of cool Titles/artists/albums within that niche so that if you liked say Radiohead and went to the indie rock section of the store they might be highlighting bands similar to them.
Personally I would love to spend time designing a better store front which allows users to spend an enjoyable time browsing the content in these online stores. I think that currently the platform holders don’t realize they are the new Virgins and HMVs of this world. They don’t spend enough time on design and layouts to be proud of their store, making them great experiences for the consumer.

So if anyone at Nintendo wants an extra designer with some ideas I’d love to help!

Coming from a Australian Classification Board report...

“The game contains references to sexual violence that cannot be accommodated in the MA15+ classification category, which states that “sexual violence, implied or otherwise, is not permitted. (One character inspects the women, feeling her breasts and “spreading her legs” before pulling a nearby character into a room, where the presumption is — as shown by a later scene — that she is then sexually abused.) ...The room is set up with video cameras and filming equipment and as the male moves away from the bed several blood spots are visible on the bed sheets. On-screen text identifies the woman as a nineteen year old, Romanian immigrant.”

Julian Gollop, the creator of the 1994 PC and Amiga strategy game X-COM: UFO Defense, launched a Kickstarter campaign this week for his next trek in the turn-based genre, Chaos Reborn. An update to one of his other classics, Chaos: The Battle of Wizards, Chaos Reborn will have players customizing and leveling-up wizards before entering a battle arena with up to five others. Gollop is seeking $180,000 by April 17 to fund the game's production, and is expecting to launch it on PC, Mac and Linux by spring 2015.

The game was first announced in November 2012 and was later detailed in January. Joystiq went hands-on with a prototype version of Chaos Reborn earlier this month, discussing the game with Gollop in a special Twitch livestream. Those that pledge at least $20 to the crowdfunding campaign will receive a digital copy of the strategy game, and backers will receive the multiplayer prototype version within two to three months of the campaign's conclusion. Capcom has insisted that this trailer is the final character reveal for Ultra Street Fighter 4, but how can we trust a company that released Street Fighter 2 seventeen times (Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is a thing that exists) with any sort of claim of finality? I’m hitting ‘post’ on this, but the minute I do I expect a Special Massive Mega Character Reveal Trailer Remix to arrive, and I’ll have to do a Quantumly Entangled Awesome Excellent Fistbump post in response. Then on and on and on. The trailer introduces Decapre, one of Bison’s henchman, and an apparently new character to control.
