Renegade Kid explains why Cult County moved from 3DS to Wii U

A portion of a Nintendo Life with Renegade Kid's Jools Watsham...

NL: Today's announcement of a Kickstarter campaign for Cult County on home consoles may have surprised some. Can you outline the process that brought you to this project, and why you've opted for crowdfunding?

JW: We still love the 3DS and plan to continue making games for it with Moon Chronicles and Treasurenauts on the horizon and much more planned. Handheld gaming is my personal preferred choice for gaming, but I also really enjoy console gaming on my Wii U. Ever since we started Renegade Kid in 2007 we have loved pushing the boundaries of handheld platforms, but have always felt the allure of console development. We got close to developing a few console games in the past, but making the jump to console takes more people, more time, which requires more money to do it properly.

While we were developing the design and story for Cult County, our focus shifted from 3DS to console/computers. Cult County feels like a project that can really benefit from the extra graphical power that consoles/computers provide.

Kickstarter offers an opportunity to put our idea out there and see if the players want it. It can help us alleviate the financial burden of developing a game while also soliciting the fan's input to help craft the game.

NL: To get a key point out of the way, this announcement has confirmed that the 3DS version is currently stopped, or may appear as an additional stretch goal should the campaign go particularly well. Was that a difficult decision to make, and when did you make that call?

JW: Yes, it was a very difficult decision for us to move away from the 3DS with Cult County, but the development of Moon Chronicoles helps soften that blow for us. We are very excited about what consoles offer, and the opportunity to flex some extra polygonal muscle with the power that consoles and computers offer.

When I first heard about Frog Fractions 2′s Kickstarter, I immediately wondered, “Can Twinbeard get more meta? Can they really?” The original game of amphibians and (not any) arithmetic went so deep down the rabbit hole that it emerged on the other side of the universe and also in another dimension, so I’ll cop to having been slightly worried. But now Twinbeard has made a game about creating a Kickstarter while running a Kickstarter for a game that won’t be called Frog Fractions 2 even though it will technically be Frog Fractions 2 and, well, I’m not very worried anymore. The game in question is called Kickstarter Simulator 2015. Its genre? FMV lightgun shooter. I’m not even joking.

EU - Nintendo 2DS Pink + White releases with Kirby: Triple Deluxe on May 16th

2nd April 2014 – A magical tale of a giant Dreamstalk and the kidnapping of a king awaits on 16th May when Kirby: Triple Deluxe releases for Nintendo 3DS family systems. In order to mark the imminent return to action for this famous pink hero, Nintendo has today revealed a new colourway to its Nintendo 2DS stable in the form of Nintendo 2DS Pink + White*, giving fans the choice to represent the Kirby colours when gaming on the go.

Nintendo 2DS Pink + White will launch on the same day as Kirby: Triple Deluxe, 16th May, and in true Kirby style, presents itself in an eye-catching pink design, complete with a white stripe across the side and back of the system. Also accompanying the release of Nintendo 2DS Pink + White will be a new silver Nintendo 2DS Carrying Case, available for purchase separately from 16th May.

Nintendo 2DS first launched in October 2013, retaining many of the hardware features of Nintendo 3DS including the same intuitive gameplay controls and wireless connectivity features for access to local and online multiplayer gameplay, Nintendo eShop and more. Bringing family-friendly value and a huge software catalogue to boot, Nintendo 2DS is an entry point into or a new way to enjoy the Nintendo handheld experience, and allows fans to play all Nintendo 3DS games in 2D.

Similarly ideal for both novice and experienced gamers alike, Kirby: Triple Deluxe provides a platforming experience full of colourful landscapes and enemies big and small for Kirby to inhale, including certain foes which he can suck up and then copy their unique abilities! Whether adopting an ability such as the Circus or the Bell, 25 different Copy Abilities found in the game allow players to dress up Kirby in all manner of different looks, with each ability possessing its own special powers and unusual combination moves. One particularly magical new ability of Kirby’s is the Hypernova, acquired after finding and gobbling up a Miracle Fruit within a level. A temporarily powered-up version of his usual inhale ability, the Hypernova allows Kirby to suck up huge obstacles and even entire sections of a level that lie in his way.

Aside from playing as Kirby and unravelling the mystery of the Dreamstalk and the kidnapping of King Dedede by a shadowy being, players can discover more than 250 Key Chains in-game, many of which pay homage to the Kirby series, and which can be exchanged with friends via StreetPass encounters. In addition, game modes in Kirby: Triple Deluxe such as Dedede’s Drum Dash add an extra dimension to the Kirby-themed action. As King Dedede, players are tasked with taking on rhythm-based time trials set against the tune of iconic music from the Kirby franchise. Meanwhile for fans of fun multiplayer action, Kirby Fighters is a competitive battle mode that can be enjoyed as a single-player experience or via the Nintendo 3DS family systems’ Download Play feature**, enabling up to four friends to play together, and requiring only one player to own a copy of the game to make it happen!

Nintendo 2DS goes pink on 16th May when Nintendo 2DS Pink + White releases on the same day as Kirby’s new adventure in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, exclusive to Nintendo 3DS family systems.

Amazon Getting into the Living Room With Fire TV

When Amazon purchased Strider developer Double Helix, it seemed to indicate the company was getting incredibly serious about the living room. That began to crystalize today with the announcement of Amazon Fire TV, a $99 streaming box. Amazon's event built a controller to make playing traditional games a breeze.

If you're familiar with the Apple TV, Roku, or Chromecast, you have a general understanding of the Fire TV, too. It's loaded with video delivery options, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and others. The big names are there or coming soon.

There's also tablet integration ala SmartGlass, voice search, photos in the cloud--blah blah blah blah blah blah.

What's up with the games? That's where Fire TV is pretty interesting, and if it weren't already broadly the case, probably immediately makes Ouya obsolete. Amazon has built a specific game controller for Fire TV that costs you an additional $39.99. Here's a look at the controller itself:

It looks nice, but like the Ouya, we really need to know how it feels. That's the key factor here. Buying the controller nets you $10 in credit and copy of Sev Zero, which we'll get to in a second.

We didn't learn anything about what Double Helix is up to, but that's not a surprise, since the deal didn't happen very long ago. Amazon Game Studios, which has secretly been around for several years, revealed several games. A third-person sci-fi shooter with tower defense elements called Sev Zero was shown, in addition to other games from the developer, including one where a dinosaur had a rocket strapped to it.

Electronic Arts, Disney, Gameloft, Ubisoft, Telltale, Mojang, 2K Games, Sega, and Double Fine were among the developers mentioned on stage. As each of them has a mobile presence on other platforms, it makes sense. Minecraft was shown, and the company also promised Monsters University, The Game of Life, The Walking Dead, NBA2K14, Asphalt 8, Riptide GP2, and Despicable Me: Minion Rush were on the way.

You don't have to wait long to buy one, either. No joke, but the Fire TV starts shipping today, and new customers can quality for a free month of Amazon Prime and Netflix. 2014 is keeping things interesting.

Amazon announced a slate of games for its Android-powered Amazon Fire TV content streaming device, revealing that Fire TV-specific versions of Mojang's Minecraft and Gameloft's Asphalt 8 are due to launch for the platform shortly after its release. The company notes that gaming will serve as a "bonus" feature supplementing Fire TV's video and music streaming capabilities.

Amazon additionally revealed Sev Zero, an internally developed, Fire TV-exclusive tower defense game that allows multiple players to join in using connected tablet devices. The company revealed that it has more than a dozen games in development at its newly formed Amazon Game Studios division.

Amazon Fire TV will host "thousands" of games from publishers like Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and Disney. Amazon will sell a Bluetooth controller separately at $40, confirming rumored designs. Games, on average, will cost less than $2 each, and will be available from an App Store-like marketplace.

Amazon Fire TV launches today, and is priced at $99.

Amazon has finally revealed the game controller for its new Fire TV video streaming device. Lo and behold, it looks exactly like the controller that was leaked last month. It sports a familiar layout with dual analogue sticks, a D-pad, and typical face and function buttons. It also features what look like media controls for watching video on services like Netflix and Twitch.

According to Mike Frazzini of Amazon Games, it will cost around $40 and will include some Amazon Coins as well. You won't necessarily need a controller to play games on Fire TV, as users will also be able to use the devices normal remote control or a special app that Amazon will release next month.

Amazon announced Amazon Fire TV today, a device that streams games and movies over the web. The Fire TV features 2 GB of RAM and a dedicated GPU, which Amazon said is the kind "usually found in smartphones." Additionally, Fire TV is based on Android and HTML, so apps are expected to be easy for developers to port to the device. It comes with a TV remote-like controller that includes a microphone on it, which can be used for the device's voice search functions.

The device's UI includes sections for movies, television, apps and photos in addition to games. Among the app icons shown during Amazon's presentation were Twitch, WWE Network, Watch ESPN, Netflix and Hulu Plus. Amazon said it is "starting off with Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video of course, and we're rolling in other partners over time."

Earlier in March, we got a look at what Amazon's Bluetooth gamepads might look like. The company founded Amazon Game Studios in 2012 and acquired Double Helix, the studio behind Killer Instinct, in February.

Road Not Taken on PS4, Vita: Living a Full, 15-Year Life

(This post is about Road Not Taken, Spry Fox’s upcoming roguelike for PS4 & PS Vita. If this is your first time hearing about RNT, check out our trailers here!)

Lately, we’ve been doing a ton of playtesting of Road Not Taken, particularly with fellow game developers. (If you’re ever looking for brutally honest feedback, other game developers are a good place to start.) In general, the feedback has been pretty positive: people love the game’s basic mechanics, art and audio. But one big issue repeatedly crept up in many of our playtests: people weren’t sensing the depth of the game and weren’t feeling a strong sense of progression. This post is all about how we’ve been fixing that.

I like to think of Road Not Taken as an iceberg floating in the ocean: a tiny percentage of the total game is visible above the surface when you first start playing, while the vast majority of the game lies unseen, waiting to be discovered. A large part of that depth comes from all the unusual creatures and objects you can encounter as you explore the enchanted forests of the game. Another large part comes from all the secret tools and boosts you can create if you know what you’re doing. (For example, if you combine the right number of red and white spirits lurking in the forest, you can create a useful magic axe.)

In our previous playtest builds, none of this was surfaced to the player. Since Road Not Taken is a roguelike, we simply expected players to assume that they would encounter different and/or more challenging objects and creatures as they progressed. And we expected players to stumble upon a few of the simpler crafting recipes in the game, and consequently realize that there must be many more recipes just waiting to be discovered. But neither of those things happened, so we realized we needed to do a better job of communicating with the player.

13570536005_22d3608fdb_z.jpg

We’ve taken several steps to address these issues. First and foremost, we’re adding a “book of secrets” to the game, and we’re introducing it to the player during the very first mission. This book is basically a giant progress meter, in addition to being a very helpful reference guide. When you start out, it contains just a few entries, two of which are simple-but-useful crafting recipes. This unambiguously signals that crafting is something you can and should do. More importantly, the book tells you how many new objects and secrets you have yet to uncover (i.e. “2 out of 100 secrets found.”) This is an unmistakable signal to the player: you’re just getting started! Get to exploring!

There are already dozens of secret crafting recipes in Road Not Taken, in addition to dozens of forest objects and critters, and we hope to add more over time. The book of secrets is, in retrospect, an obvious way to make it all comprehensible to the player.

This sort of problem is common in game development. You build a robust system, expecting everyone to love it at first sight, and then grapple with the brutal reality that people either don’t understand the system and/or don’t understand its depth. Your tutorial might need work. (We’ve gone through at least a dozen iterations of the Road Not Taken tutorial and probably have a couple more left to go before it’s good enough!) Your metagame might be poorly surfaced. Your UI might be confusing. The list goes on and on. There’s only one cure to these illnesses, and that’s lots of playtesting, iteration and polish.

rnt_blog_playerprog_grave.gif

There are a bunch of other things we’re doing to give new players a clearer sense of progression. For example, one interesting thing about Road Not Taken is that your character has a maximum lifespan of 15 years, and each mission you embark upon consumes a year of your life. (This ties into one of the main themes of the game: trying to live the best possible life in the limited time you have on this Earth.) In earlier builds, we never actually informed players of their lifespan limit until they died after 15 missions. This caused new players to feel like the game was somewhat aimless at first, and later upset them when they unexpectedly kicked the bucket! So now we signal your limited lifespan in a bunch of ways. After each mission, we explicitly tell you: “X years remaining.” (14… 13… 12… etc) And NPCs comment about the passing of time. There’s a rather foreboding doctor in town who likes to make not-very-funny jokes about your dwindling lifespan. It’s hard not to get the message.

You can, of course, die before you reach your limited lifespan. This game is a roguelike, after all! We’ve found ourselves tuning the difficulty up over time as we realize that encountering a steep challenge is half of what folks like about a good roguelike (the other half is a deep sense of discovery, which this game has in spades, and which we’ve accentuated with the book of secrets that I mentioned earlier.) High difficulty and death in Road Not Taken are, in their own ways, a signal to players that this game is not going to hold your hand. You need to play carefully, and you need to learn the game’s secrets if you want to survive.

Okay, that’s all I’ve got for you today! As always, we really hope you’re enjoying these little insights into the development of Road Not Taken. If you have any questions about this post (or anything about the game in general) just leave me a comment! I’ll do my best to give you a decent answer. :-)

PS: If you’re planning to attend PAX East, we’d love to meet you! We’ll be there showing off Road Not Taken (with a playable demo!) and we’ll be giving away a beautiful free poster (see below) to everyone who plays the demo and signs up for our newsletter! Please come by, say hello, and take a free poster home with you. :-)
