Game of Thrones: Ascent studio developing strategic mobile Star Trek game

Disruptor Beam, the developers behind Game of Thrones: Ascent, announced the development of Star Trek Timelines today. Published by CBS, Star Trek Timelines is a story-driven strategy RPG for iOS, Android and browsers in which players explore galaxies and resolve conflicts through diplomacy, combat and science. Players will build a starship and crew and go on missions with characters from the many series of Star Trek TV shows and movies.

The studio's CEO, Jon Radoff wrote a blog on the developer's site detailing its vision for the multiplayer game, comparing it to Game of Thrones: Ascent. While Radoff said the game will be familiar to Game of Thrones players, Star Trek Timelines will feature a "more immersive exploration system" as well as "a more detailed tactical system" for conflict resolution. Disruptor Beam currently doesn't have a release schedule for the game. [Image: Disruptor Beam]

From Software's efforts to bring Dark Souls to PC in 2012 should have been met with excitement: A version of the cult hit for the "PC master race"? Praise the sun! Unfortunately, a combination of From Software's inexperience working on the platform and the game's last minute jump to PC led to an ugly port, which was devoid of even the simplest graphical customization options. It was a barebones port, which is all that Namco Bandai originally promised.

For Dark Souls 2, Namco Bandai promised "increased texture resolution and an enhanced frame rate option." The details are included in the PC version, I learned after spending some time with the port this weekend. The video options don't dive as deep as PC gamers often desire, but the upcoming version of the game does offer increased stability. While textures look sharper, however, Dark Souls 2 for PC isn't a colossal graphical leap ahead of the console versions already available.

Last year, there was a leak about potential characters to appear in Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS. The list included Mega Man, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Little Mac, Pac-Man and Mii. As you now know, more of those supposed leaks turned out to be right than wrong. Now that same leaker has come forward with another list of characters that will supposedly be in the game.

Shulk (Xenoblade)
Palutena (Kid Icarus)
Chrom (Fire Emblem: Awakening)
Chorus Men (Rhythm Heaven)
Pokemon from Pokemon X and Y

Will any of these listed names actually appear in the game? I guess we'll have a first chance at finding out during today's Direct!

Ubisoft on Watch_Dogs' story, connections to real life, water physics and not dumbing things down
examiner.com posted by GoNintendo Apr 08 2014 20:23 GMT in Nintendo Stuff

The following comments and info come from Jonathan Morin, creative director on Watch_Dogs, and Ubisoft's Danny Belanger...

"Watch Dogs is a game that explores the impact of technology in our society. Privacy and paranoia are indeed parts of our themes but at heart it is a look at human beings and their relation with evolution. It would be hard for us to be more relevant than we are now that is for sure.

But when you think about it, the debate surrounding democratization of knowledge has been around forever. There’s been the emergence of printing and then public libraries. In the end, they generated debates that are in so many ways similar to the idea of controlling the internet or the discussions surrounding Julian Assange and Edward Snowden.

So while I think it is a great time to tell this story, I also believe it is the kind of themes we periodically need to be reminded of in order to make the right choices as a society. If Watch Dogs can feed the discussion even just a little I would see it as a great success." - Morin

- current-gen versions will have more cars and people
- water in current-gen not possible on previous generation

"I feel like games are dumbed down because we want to make money, and sometimes we underestimate what players can do. I hope Watch Dogs can show everyone that it’s possible to do online games without being intimidated by a lobby, that it’s possible to see another player without being scared it’s going to be a 12-year-old shouting a bunch of insults, and that it’s possible to make a game where you can test the systems and push at the edges without feeling like you’re working. I hope it can do all that, and if it could be a game that helps players have a bigger conversation about our relationship with technology, that would be awesome too.

I would love for Watch Dogs to open more players’ eyes to the idea of testing a game and expressing themselves within it, instead of following the ride. I don’t have anything against games that just ask you follow a predefined ride, but I would love for more players to develop a taste [for systemic games]." - Morin

Titanfall averages 46.5 frames-per-second on Xbox 360, Digital Foundry reports
eurogamer.net posted by Joystiq Apr 08 2014 21:00 GMT in Xbox One

The recently released Xbox 360 version of Respawn Entertainment's mech-dropping first-person shooter Titanfall maintains an average unlocked framerate of 46.5 frames-per-second, gaming performance analysis site Digital Foundry reports.

Digital Foundry finds that the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall runs at a 1040x600 native resolution, compared to the Xbox One's 1408x792 resolution. The Xbox 360 version boasts an unlocked framerate of up to 60 frames-per-second, along with an option to lock the framerate at 30 FPS to eliminate screen tearing and input lag.

Presentation-wise, Digital Foundry notes that the Xbox 360 version of Titanfall has "a necessary reduction in texture detail compared to the other versions, but nothing that overtly compromises the look of the game."

The testing results are consistent with pre-release claims from porting studio Bluepoint Games, which promised a framerate above 30 frames-per-second in the final Xbox 360 version of Titanfall.

Marvel superheroes to join Disney Infinity
joystiq.com posted by Joystiq Apr 08 2014 20:30 GMT in Wii U

After years of superhero films from Marvel Studios igniting the box office, it was inevitable that Disney would add Marvel's characters to open-world license mashup Disney Infinity.

The game, which drops players into a sandbox-style environment populated with famous faces from throughout Disney's vast catalogue of lucrative characters, has long been a suspected destination for Marvel's heroes. In February, we reported on layoffs at Disney Infinity developer Disney Interactive, at which time the Wall Street Journal claimed that Marvel characters would join Disney Infinity in a "new version" of the game. Presumably that explains the "2.0" designation at the end of the above trailer, though so far we've found no further information on what might also be included in this new incarnation of Disney Infinity.

There's no word on when Marvel's heroes might join Disney Infinity, nor word on which heroes will make the cut. Given the title of the video, "Get Ready To Assemble," we think the Avengers will be a safe bet, but otherwise we're in the dark. When contacted, neither Disney nor Marvel had anything further to add. [Image: Disney]
