Chrono Trigger is an upcoming book by Michael P Williams. It's...all about Chrono Trigger, looking at parallels between Crono's world and ours, a study of the institutions of the game's world (its laws and religions), how the game's characters fit (and defy!) genre conventions and, yes, a poke at the aches and pains of a plot that involves time travel.Read more...

An idyllic scene, for sure, but Lavos is sleeping beneath the planet's crust, gathering energy in this very moment. A couple thousand years, and he will emerge, raining destruction upon our world... luckily, we have Warialasky to save us.Read more...

We've seen it plenty of times: A guy sits in a room with a bunch of instruments, performing music from a cartoon or video game. Sometimes the performance is only decent. Sometimes, it's excellent. This is one of those second times.Read more...

Good morning, Crono! Check out this nifty re-creation of the Chrono Trigger SNES box art by The Lando Bros. They say it took about 3 years to complete, and that they left Marle off because A) her fire spell is difficult to get right and B) she actually uses water spells in the game.Read more...

Reaching the end of a world map in a classic JRPG game sends you to the opposite end of the map. This is how most world maps worked back in the 2D days, and this is why these worlds are actually donut-shaped (or more precisely, toroidal), as WolfieMario's GIFs of Chrono Trigger show.Read more...

Have some sweet Chrono Trigger tunes. Musician Blake Robinson, who previously released a musical tribute to Banjo-Kazooie, now did the same for Chrono Trigger. Clocking in at 40 minutes, the first volume features 23 orchestral tracks based on the music of Square's classic RPG. There's even a trailer!Read more...

The 16-bit era had unique visuals. Simple yet bright and colorful, we could always get lost in the tiny details. Taking parts of these memorable games and mixing them with a real life environment might sound odd, but if done right the results are beautiful. Two gents, deviantART user Victor Sauron and Glauber Tanaka, played with the idea recently and shared their work separately, which involves a huge variety of characters from older consoles put into the real world. The first five images below (as well as the top image) are from Glauber Tanaka and include SNES classics such as TMNT IV: Turtles In Time, Top Gear 2 or U.N. Squadron. The rest are the work of Victor Sauron featuring classic characters and scenes you probably all recognize. Let's have a look! Real Bits [deviantART] Homenagem Super Nes [Béhance]

#chronotrigger I wouldn't have immediately thought that Jay-Z and the "Wind Scene" song from Chrono Trigger would make such excellent bedfellows. And yet they really do. 2 Mello has done a mash-up that mixes Jay Z's "Ignorant Shit" and the Wind Scene tune from the game, as well as the version by YouTuber mklachu. More »

#japan Over the past few months I've been anxiously awaiting the new PS3 title Tokitowa. While some are looking forward to the love story aspect or to its attempt to make a playable anime, the core of my anticipation is something altogether different: I've been dying to play another Japanese time travel story. #timetravel This morning, I received a link to a twenty-year-old video. It's the first-ever preview of The Journeyman Project, as shown at Macworld in 1992. Perhaps appropriately for a game about time travel, I felt a distinct sense of journeying into the past while I watched it. What once looked so painstakingly rendered now, in the way of these things, looks (and sounds) primitive, and I feel the gulf of the decades between the adult I am now and the young teen I was then. #leighalexander Japanese RPGs used to be a lot more controversial. Or maybe it was just because I was a teenager during the genre's heyday – you know, when Final Fantasy games flew off shelves, when hours of CG cutscenes featuring teary-eyed androgynes were considered breathtaking rather than tiresome — and teenagers like to argue about things on the internet a lot more than people my age can stomach. I'll never look at you the same way again, 2Poch.

After experiencing Chrono Trigger again during the Endurance Run, and despite being reminded about how strange and weird Chrono Cross was, I’d happily play another Chrono game. The way Chrono Trigger ends, you just know they went off on more adventures, and I’d like to see them. Where'd Brono's mom go?!

Chrono Bind is not that game. There’s not much “news” here, except to dispel speculation I’ve been seeing about a domain registration Square Enix has purchased, discovered by Siliconera.

Siliconera points out that Chrono Bind is a card game that’s being included in an set of downloadable content for Final Fantasy XIII-2.

The idea that Square Enix won’t ever make another Chrono game again is crazy, just like it’s crazy to think Final Fantasy VII won’t get a remake or direct sequel one day. Today just isn’t that day.

Hello everyone! You may remember me from such PlayStation.Blog articles as “Chrono Trigger Hits PSN This Tuesday.” I haven’t finished playing through it yet, but I’m back! Why, you ask, would I stop playing this classic game to write another blog post?

The answer: I’m here to announce Square Enix’s “Winter of RPGs” campaign. In some parts of North America, winter seems to have gotten an early head start. And while that brings a lot of headaches for those who have to contend with ice and snow, it’s also a perfect time for us to announce our latest group of titles coming to PSN. So, while you’re staying inside and out of the cold, icky weather, why not fire up your PS3 and play some classic RPGs? We’ve got some great games lined up to get you through the cold days ahead.

So what’s up first? Some of you may have noticed my responses to reader comments in my last column. And even last week, readers of “The Drop” were asking when we’d see this particular title arrive. Well, get ready to travel not through time, but through alternate realities when Chrono Cross releases. Join Serge as he finds himself in a world where he died as a young child, meets the enigmatic thief Kid, and goes on a quest for the artifact known as the Frozen Flame! The sequel to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross delivers on some great gameplay and fantastic story, which is probably the reason why the game is so highly rated. It won lots of awards when it was released, including Gamespot’s Game of the Year in 2000. Don’t believe me? Google it. I’ll wait.

Chrono Cross will release on November 8th—just five days from now. You have been warned.

But, you know, we can’t really call it the “Winter of RPGs” if we just announce one title—even if it is one as great as Chrono Cross. The second title in our “Winter of RPGs” lineup begins with a meteor and some crystals. It also expanded on the incredible job system and introduced us to the Time Mage, Blue Mage, Berserker, and Dancer jobs, to name a few. That’s right—it’s Final Fantasy V! Our main character is Bartz, whom many of you will probably know from his appearances in Dissida Final Fantasy and Dissida 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy. In Final Fantasy V, you take on the role of Bartz and help defend the Crystals that keep the evil sorcerer Exdeath imprisoned.

Final Fantasy V will be released on November 22, just in time for you to save the world over Thanksgiving!

We’ve got one more title to announce, and it’s a big one. This one made it all to #9 on IGN’s top 100 games of all time back in 2007. And in 2009, Game Informer went one better and named it #8, while G4TV named it #1 in their “Top 5 Must-Own RPGs.” Have you guessed what it is yet?

It features a crazy clown mage who is truly evil and the young female half-Esper who winds up opposing him. Welcome Kefka and Terra to the PlayStation Network just in time for the holidays!

Final Fantasy VI will be released on December 6th.

That’s all for now—Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy V, and Final Fantasy VI. To horribly misquote Shakespeare, “Now is the winter of our RPGs.”

The release of Chrono Trigger on the PlayStation Network as a PSone Classic has been a bit of a debacle. Unlike its brethren SNES-era Square RPG Final Fantasy VI, which is already out as a PSone Classic in Europe and Japan, Chrono Trigger hasn't been released anywhere in the world as a PSone Classic. Some wondered if it was because of the notoriously bad SNES-to-PSX port of the game, or some other reasoning...
