Two weeks ago, we started a PlayStation Mobile promotion that offered six free games over six weeks. The first two games were Samurai Beatdown and Beats Slider. This week, we’re pleased to announce that the free PlayStation Mobile game is Cubixx. In this fun an addictive game, you have to use your laser to cut away the surfaces of a mysterious cube and free the energy within. Cutting longer lines and crossing multiple cube surfaces gives you bigger combos, but at far greater risk. This is a great old-school, highscore-chasing game with 20 fun filled levels. Ross Brierley, a game tester with Laughing Jackal, had this to say about Cubixx when it launched in October 2012 on PlayStation Moblie .

Cubixx was our first self-published title and also spawned a sequel in the form of our first ever full PS3 game, the amazing Cubixx HD. Upon release, this thrilling action puzzler was awarded 9/10 by The Sixth Axis, who called it: “massively addictive.”

Cubixx HD is the sequel to the PlayStation minis game Cubixx, and it’s coming exclusively to PS3 on September 20th for $9.99 (plus 30% off in the first week for PlayStation Plus subscribers). Cubixx HD is a modern-day take on classic area-capture games such as Qix, but with an awesome twist: instead of a 2D game field, Cubixx HD expands this addictive game concept across all six sides of a three-dimensional cube. That’s six times the danger!

Following on from the success of the original Cubixx we’ve added more – lots more, in fact. Cubixx HD now features 50 levels of arcade action playable in both single player and seven-player co-op. All these levels are also playable in Time Attack, Score Attack and Line Attack modes, with up to seven players competing at once and featuring over 150 online leaderboards and 50 addictive Challenges. Ruthless players can engage in the cold-blooded mayhem of Deathmatch mode, again supporting up to seven players.

Cubixx HD also features a whole new cast of enemies. Aside from the returning Cubixx and Line Chasers there are the villainous Homers who will chase after you and slow you down, Asteroids that will rain death and destruction upon you and the almighty Black Hole that attracts nearby objects.

As you can see, I’m a massive fan of Cubixx HD but obviously I’m going to be a bit biased seeing as I worked on this fantastic game, so how does this little quote from Official PlayStation Magazine UK’s 8 out of 10 review for Cubixx HD sound?

“The controls are smooth, the soundtrack is brilliantly pitched, and not since we had a post-op morphine pump has anything screamed ‘just one more go’ louder. It’s adamantium-boulder tough at times, but there’s never anyone to blame for failure but yourself. And for the stubborn among us, that’s the killer.”

We’ve been receiving great reviews from all over the world. Eurogamer.net awarded the game 8 out of 10 describing it as “murderously addictive” and calling it the greatest incarnation of the area-capture game style ever created, while The Sixth Axis also gave it 8 out of 10, saying it “hovers on the cusp of absolute, delightful joy”. The Koalition awarded Cubixx HD 9 out of 10, calling it “an essential PSN purchase.”

Last year, developer Laughing Jackal released a PSP Mini called Cubixx, a take on the "surround" gameplay of Qix, across a cube instead of a flat surface. Now the developer is updating its Mini for a much less "miniature" release, as a PS3-exclusive downloadable title.

Cubixx HD features new enemies like black holes and asteroids, plus multiplayer with a customizable "Cubot" for each player. And, of course, as you'd expect from the system -- and from the name -- it's been prettied up significantly. Laughing Jackal has yet to announce a release date for Cubixx HD, unfortunately, so we don't get to say "it's just around the corner."

Cubixx has been very well received in our native EU PSN Store, and now we’re sharing the cuboid love with our friends across the Atlantic. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to check out this super-addictive retro title. Be there, or be, um… cube-shaped, I guess.

Cubixx takes inspiration from a couple of older games of the same type and tasks the player with using their laser to cut away the surfaces of a mysterious cube and free the energy within. Cutting longer lines and crossing multiple cube surfaces will reward you with larger combos, but at far greater risk.

The game features 20 levels of increasingly lunatic difficulty, we really do challenge anyone sane to try and beat Cubixx’s 20th level. Many have tried but only a brave few walked away with their pride intact (unfortunately I am not included in that number).
