Before Capcom will patch the latest patch in Street Fighter X Tekken in mid-June, old blue-and-gold wants to sell you some more gems. On June 5, a bevy of new gems and the complete costume swap pack goes on sale.

That doesn't mean there aren't freebies up for grabs. A new color palette and Wild Card booster pack - the latter is only available for download until June 19 - will debut alongside several new gem packs priced at 80 MS Points ($1) a pop. Finally, there's the complete swap costume pack to consider, which will set fightin' fashionistas back a hefty 1440 MS Points ($18).

Let's face it: Street Fighter X Tekken just wouldn't be Street Fighter X Tekken without at least one game-breaking bug. This was probably Capcom's thought process when it launched the latest patch, which introduces a glitch that freezes the game whenever Rolento's knife hits an opponent's fireball.

The above video demonstrates the bug, which affects Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games that have been updated to version 1.04, Shoryuken reports. The patch does fix a few problems, such as hit box issues.

Street Fighter X Tekken may have sold over a million units since launch, but Capcom recently declared that the game didn't hit internal expectations.

"Sales of Street Fighter X Tekken have fallen short of our plan. We believe one of causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time," Capcom stated in a Q&A following its earnings release.

Although such a quote could be directed at companies like Warner Bros.' Mortal Kombat, Namco Bandai's Soulcalibur 5 or indie titles like Skullgirls, we prefer to imagine Capcom speaking that quote into a mirror.

As Eurogamer notes, since bringing back the fighting genre to popular consciousness with Street Fighter 4 in 2008 (consoles in 2009), the company itself has launched: Super Street Fighter 4, Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter x Tekken, along with PSN and XBLA re-releases of fighters from its back catalog.

On-disc DLC has become one of the most heated debate topics this generation.

Capcom is in the midst of reevaluating how it will handle on-disc downloadable content in the future, the company said today.

Any changes will not be reflected immediately, however.

“We have been listening to your comments and as such have begun the process of re-evaluating how such additional game content is delivered in the future,” said Capcom senior VP of planning and business development Christian Svensson in its forums.

Consumers have not shied away from vocalizing their thoughts on Capcom’s continued decision to place downloadable content players must pay for on the disc. Capcom is not the only company that’s engaged in the practice, but has been seen as the most egregious offender. Street Fighter X Tekken, for example, has 12 characters on the disc that won’t be unlocked until the Vita version’s released this fall, despite being unlocked and playable for those willing to hack it.

Svensson warned that any changes would not be reflected in games Capcom releases in the near future, such as Dragon’s Dogma. The upcoming open world action RPG will have some of its downloadable content on the disc.

“The decision to include some additional (but not all planned additional) game content for the game on disc was made at the beginning of the game’s development cycle,” he said, “as at the time this was determined to be the most efficient way of ensuring certain content was made available.”

That’s been Capcom’s standard explanation for on-disc downloadable content. For its fighting games, it’s definitely made a certain amount of sense. You need all users to have the same content locally to ensure there are not sync issues in multiplayer. Look at Mortal Kombat for an example of how it can all go wrong.

Is this fall's Resident Evil 6 too soon for a test of this new set of policies? I’ll try to find out at E3.

“Just wanted people to know in advance the whys, wherefores and where we're going in the future,” said Svensson. “You are being heard.”

Capcom's net sales are down 16 percent year over year, for the fiscal year ending March 31. The company brought in 82.1 billion yen (just over $1 billion), with its Consumer Online Games division responsible for 53.5 billion yen of that (23.9 percent lower than that division's performance last year).

The performance dip can be attributed to the movement of Dragon's Dogma out of the fiscal year (and into this month), and to outstanding performance of the company's titles last year. Capcom experienced record sales of its big games in fiscal 2011, and fiscal 2012 pales in comparison. Monster Hunter Tri-G, the Japan-exclusive 3DS version, topped the company's sales chart at 1.6 million copies. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City also sold well; Street Fighter X Tekken "lagged" in comparison to expectations, though both it and ORC broke a million.

Capcom didn't share sales data for its other releases, Asura's Wrath, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Resident Evil Revelations, merely acknowledging the games as things that came out.

Come around mid-May, Capcom will drop another update for Street Fighter X Tekken. The highlights include infinite combo fixes for Kazuya, Xiaoyu, Pac-Man and Kuro (so no more of this). The last update, which went live earlier this week, added new gems to the in-game store.

Capcom-Unity has the full list of changes. Other fixes include changes to some damage properties and frame data for a bunch of fighters, including Ogre, Juri, Rufus, Zangief and more.

You may not have noticed during the frenzy of battle, but Pac-Man's got something interesting going on with his battle bot in Street Fighter X Tekken. On the back, there's an animated classic Pac-Man game board where Pac's chasing down his next ghastly snack!

Too bad nobody will be able to notice the intricate Easter egg mid-fight. Instead, you'll probably want to check it out in the customization screen - or, by simply hitting the play button on the video above.

[Thanks, Robert.]

Now that the pesky sound issue in Street Fighter X Tekken's online modes has been taken care of, Capcom has time to focus on what really matters: More gems. A massive, massive batch of gems is to delivered to the game tomorrow via update, along with a "replay analyzer." It caught us off guard at first, because the analyzer's purpose/function is not described in the Capcom Unity announcement from which this news originates.

Ater a little digging, however, we uncovered an official description of the feature, which describes it as "a tool that will show you various data from a replay." Ah, yes, of course. It all seems so obvious in hindsight. The full list of tomorrow's gems can be found beyond the veil.

With the recent kerfuffle surrounding Street Fighter X Tekken's on-disc downloadable content, Epic's Cliff Bleszinski chimed in on the issue, calling it "an ugly truth of the gaming industry." Speaking to GameSpot, the well-known designer noted that prior to a game finally shipping, there are "often three or four months where the game is basically done," leaving developers with "an idle team that needs to be working on things."

For the sake of compatibility, some downloadable content may need to be located on the disc itself. "It's an ugly truth of the gaming industry," Bleszinski added, "I'm not the biggest fan of having to do it, but it is one of the unfortunate realities." Once the industry goes entirely digital, he said, the issue will be obsolete.

Capcom recently raised the ire of its fans when it was discovered that upcoming downloadable characters were already on the disc. The publisher stated that the content was included on the disc in order to ensure compatibility by offering a "single, unified version of the game." In a response to Better Business Bureau complaints, the company later stated its belief that there is "effectively no distinction" between bonus content included on a disc and downloaded content.

Some consumers were particularly riled by Capcom's decision to lock Street Fighter X Tekken downloadable content directly on the disc itself. Some were riled enough to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, with Cinema Blend posting a response from Capcom reportedly received by several consumers. Capcom's statement defends the practice, noting that the company is sorry for customers that feel disappointed, though it adds that the game includes "an enormous amount of content" out of the box.

As for the DLC itself, the statement echoes Capcom's previous remarks, saying that the on-disc content "will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game's lifecycle." The statement adds that the only difference between on-disc and off-disc DLC is delivery method, with Capcom nothing there is "effectively no distinction" between them.

For what it's worth, Capcom has closed 10 complaints with the BBB over the last 12 months, six of those coming since March 27, after the launch of Street Fighter X Tekken.

The sound issues plaguing online play for Street Fighter X Tekken should be remedied with an update on April 10, Capcom has announced. The patch not only tackles the sound vacuum, but also addresses gem complaints -- specifically, how annoying it is to set up gem combinations right now.

Users will be able to set gem combinations from the versus screen as opposed to having to go through each individual fighter and setting combinations that way. A demonstration of the new gem system, as well as an overview of the upcoming DLC schedule, can be seen in the above video from the folks at Capcom-Unity.

Yoshinori Ono made his triumphant return to Twitter today after a prolonged absence. That absence was due in no small part to a medical ailment that caused Capcom's Street Fighter franchise producer to collapse at a recent Street Fighter x Tekken event in Asia, and sent him to the hospital. Ono's return to tweeting saw him immediately letting fans know he was okay and that the team was hard at work on future Street Fighter x Tekken patch updates, as well as to let everyone know that he'll be stepping down from his role as series producer for the foreseeable future.

This is how the world ends.

Ono didn't specify how long he'd be out, nor who his replacement as head of one of Capcom's biggest game franchises would be, simply saying that "another person" would be in charge of the series for "a while."

Ono's history with the Street Fighter series is a long one, though his role as the front-facing voice of the franchise (especially from the Japanese side) and lead producer of the series has only been in place since Street Fighter IV. Still, Ono's name and boisterous personality are inextricably linked with all things Street Fighter these days, making the idea of an Ono-less Street Fighter a somewhat strange and unfamiliar one.

Ono gave no clues about what he'd be doing in the interim, save but to say that he would be providing "constant support" for those currently working on Street Fighter x Tekken and any future projects. His only clue to future intentions (beyond that of simply recuperating) was to say that while he's out, he'll be thinking "about the new future of fighting game after this."

We here at Giant Bomb wish Ono good health and a speedy recovery, and eagerly await the day when he can bring his personal brand of high octane crazy back to the Street Fighter scene, and resume doing things like recreating the M. Bison monologue from Street Fighter: The Movie, because hey, why the hell not?

The fact that Street Fighter X Tekken's character DLC exists on the disc is a contentious issue in its own right, but now a preemptive compatibility countermeasure is being exploited by nefarious ne'er-do-wells with hacked Xbox 360s.

As seen in the video above, unreleased DLC characters have begun showing up on Xbox Live. While this doesn't cause any technical problems for law-abiding citizens or break the game in any way, Capcom is unpleased: "Quite ballsy for folks to be taking hacked Xbox 360s on Live where they are detectable," said Capcom senior vice-president Christian Svensson. "In any event, we already have openned channels of communication with MS on these issues Friday night."

Initially, Svensson asked members of the Capcom Unity forums to take screenshots and record videos of offenders, but that thread has since been closed. "We'll catch them ourselves," Svensson added, presumably just before donning a cloak and cowl and jumping out the nearest open window.

Law can really lay down the... uh...

Street Fighter X Tekken is a good example of a game with a terrific and exciting core that manages to get brought down by just about everything that happens around it. The fighting system in SFXT makes interesting updates to Capcom's 2D fighting formula that make for a wilder game without going all Versus Series along the way. The characters from Namco's Tekken franchise fit into the action surprisingly well, with some updates to make them fit into Capcom's ways of doing things sitting alongside just enough of the old stuff to evoke the essence of Tekken. But it's only at its peak when you're sitting next to another player, locally engaging in SFXT's brand of tag battles. Online, I found it to be a bit of a mess, and the game's attempts at meaningful character customization fall victim to layers and layers of slow-moving menus and a bundle of additional content that only serves to further confuse the issue.

This game takes Street Fighter IV as its base and works forward from there, removing focus attacks, allowing way more in-air juggles, and adding an arsenal of quick, easy combo chains and a handful of tag moves to help you get one character exchanged for your other. It also brings in a forward roll while getting up that mimics some of Tekken's wake-up game. But, most importantly, it brings in a ton of Tekken characters. The developers haven't turned all of those Iron Fist fighters into carbon copies of the Street Fighters, though some concessions have been made to make them fit a little tighter into the Capcom format. Some moves that would have required a lot of button tapping before have been turned into more traditional Street Fighter specials. Hwoarang's flying air kicks (the "Hunting Hawk," if you will) have been converted to work via a simple hurricane kick-style motion. But some of the quick, button tapping combos of Tekken appear, as well. Kazuya's 1, 1, 2 punch combo appears in the game pretty much intact, for example. The attempts to include just enough Tekken stuff prevents the "new" characters from just feeling like a batch of characters that, for the most part, don't toss projectiles. But it also makes them slightly trickier to pick up and use. When you're going up against a seemingly endless parade of online fighters that pick two Street Fighter characters every single time (Ken/Ryu, unsurprisingly, seems to be kind of popular), getting a feel for the Tekken guys and attempting to apply the things you've picked up offline or in the training modes can be something of a chore.

Dan will take you through the training mode.

In addition to picking a team of characters, you can further customize things by equipping your fighters with gems. These gems come in the form of if-then statements, sort of like "if you land 5 normal attacks, then your damage output is increased by 10 percent for 20 seconds." Some of the more substantial bonuses come with a penalty, like a lowered movement speed or decreased defense. There are also gems in place for lesser players, essentially turning on an Easy Operation style mode that makes it easier to do some moves, but these gems typically come with a substantial penalty. The gems themselves are an interesting idea, but the way they're implemented makes them more annoying than anything else.

For starters, you won't have every single gem at your disposal. Even if you pay extra for the game's special edition, which comes with 45 additional gems, there are still plenty of additional slots for post-release gems, presumably as part of a paid download. On top of that, some of the gems that come with the more expensive version of the game are arguably better than the standard gems, which is sort of gross. It's not quite a full on "pay to win" problem, but it sure feels close. The gems themselves are also difficult to implement as they must be assigned on a per-character basis, and the default gem loadouts given by the game are bad, utilizing only two of the three potential slots. This means that, unless you're the sort of person that's only going to ever select one or two teams of characters, you sort of need to drag your way through the gem menus for every single character to build even a standard set of gems. You can create two sets for each character and choose between them when selecting your team, but the ability to create a few universal sets that can be applied to any character would have provided a good option for people who don't feel like tweaking every single fighter.

If I could embed a sound file right here of the Tekken 2 announcer saying "PAUL PHOENIX," I would.

The offline portion of Street Fighter X Tekken has the modes you'd expect to see from a modern Capcom fighting game, including a story mode that includes FMV endings for the "official" teams, training and trial modes, and a collection of local multiplayer modes that allow up to four players to play at the same time. Online is the part that's potentially more interesting, but it's pretty broken in its current implementation. The game seems to be attempting to implement a GGPO-like system where the action can roll back to the last synched position really quickly whenever latency gets in the way, ideally resulting in smooth-feeling gameplay that's better than the average net code. But SFXT has always felt a little off to me over the Internet, specifically when it comes to blocking. I feel like I'm constantly saying "I totally blocked that" as I eat up combo after combo.

But the real problem is that the audio is completely broken during online matches. Sound effects stutter and get cut-off as the game rolls back and synchs up again, so voices don't play properly, hits don't have any sound associated with them, and the whole thing generally sounds like crap. Between these two probably-related things, the online feels pretty much unplayable whether you're going one-on-one in a ranked game or putting six players together in an endless lobby. The four-player scramble mode, which puts all four fighters on-screen at once, is just fine, but that mode is so insanely chaotic anyway that it sort of masks the other issues.

It's a shame that the online is so off, because like I said before, the core of Street Fighter X Tekken is really cool. Even if you decide to ignore the Tekken characters, the fighters you know well from previous Capcom fighting games feel different because of the game's juggle system. And the Tekken fighters bring the whole thing up to a rather large roster of playable characters, giving you plenty--almost too much, actually--to learn. With cleaner online play it'd be easier to recommend, but if you don't mind an extra helping of Internet weirdness or have enough locals nearby to let you compete offline, it can be a hell of a good time.

While we all await Capcom's plan to address a number problems with Street Fighter X Tekken -- the absence of online couch co-op in the Xbox 360 version; the sound, infinite combo and lag issues that persist online -- the company has laid out plans for DLC, both free and premium.

On April 3, alternate costumes go on sale, allowing SF characters to dress up like Tekken people and vice versa. Each costume will set you back 80 MS Points ($1) each, or 1040 MS Points ($13) each for all SF or all Tekken fighters. Also, Capcom will release some free colors for customization and three new quick combo slots for each fighter.

After the April stuff, Capcom will release a free tournament support update that makes it easier to select gems at the character select screen through some kind of "dial system." Following that is a title update that will add "three new Assist Gem packs and six new Boost Gem packs, which add over 60 gems to the selection pool," Capcom-Unity reports. Each character will also get three more customizable gem sets, bringing the total up to five for each fighter.

Finally, those 12 characters coming to consoles after the Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken launches are priced as a set at 1600 MS Points ($20). It'll be available later this year.
