Accursed PlayStation-folk, they with the yawning vacuums where their souls should be, they whose only true pleasure in life is the taking of another’s life, they who present daily offerings of slaughtered housecats to the eight-foot effigies of Aleister Crowley they keep in their bathrooms, they who only smile when watching news reports of ferry sinkings and plane crashes, have been enjoying the expanded Director’s Cut of Lone Survivor for around a month. But what of PC players, those luminous beings, those modern-day angels, those champions of generosity and kindness, those guardians of love?

They’ve only got to wait until Halloween, it transpires. And, to reward them for their wondrousness, any of them who’ve already bought the original edition of the game will get the new version for free.(more…)

Superflat Games' spooky survival-horror adventure, Lone Survivor: Director's Cut, is set to grace the PC and Mac on October 31 - just in time for Halloween. In Lone Survivor, the world has been ravaged by disease and, playing as a nameless protagonist in a surgical mask, you must avoid monsters and scavenge for supplies.

In a blog post, creator Jasper Byrne says the updated version of the game will be available as a free download to anyone who has already picked up the game. The blog post adds that save files from the original game will be compatible with Director's Cut, so you can start in one version of the game and continue in the other.

In order to ease some of the financial strain as a result of developing this new version of the game for ten months, Superflat Games will determine a new price point for Director's Cut when it launches on Halloween. Lone Survivor: Director's Cut will be available through the official website, Good Old Gaming and other digital distribution channels.

Adam’s many words on Lone Survivor, the excellent horror adventure game from Jasper Byrne, are now completely redundant. A waste of black and white pixels. A pox on the RPS servers. I’ll log-in later and delete them, and then possibly delete Adam and take his place. Why? Well, Lone Survivor is about to receive the attention of a Director’s Cut, which will bring more story, better lighting, as well as bits that were cut for being too elaborate to make properly before the release date. It will re-frame the game. Why kill Adam? I dunno. It’s something to do. An eeky trailer with a strange song is beneath.(more…)

Since Lone Survivor game developer Japser Byrne announced the Playstation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions of the game in March, both he and the team here at Curve have been working flat out to deliver one of the most unique horror games you’re ever likely to play.

Jasper will be joining Curve developers Sam and Hamish at the Sony area at E3, where he’ll be showing off the very latest developments on the PlayStation version of the game, answering questions and revealing more information about the game, which is due to be released this summer. We are very excited to be demonstrating the very first playable build of the game at E3.

The original Lone Survivor was released last year on the PC and was well received by critics, scoring 81% on Metacritic, nominated for a Golden Joystick as well as other awards and official selections, and picked up by many sites as Horror Game of the Year. The soundtrack was also consistently praised.

For us at Curve, one of the best things about working on a game like Lone Survivor is that we get to take a game that people really enjoyed and use it as an opportunity for the creator to add even more content, and for us to take that and produce something that we believe is the ultimate version of the game.

We work really closely with Jasper on all aspects of the game development, allowing him to focus on creating cool new elements for the game. That means bringing Trophies, Cross-Buy and Cross-Play support to Lone Survivor, but it also goes far beyond that…

Firstly, Jasper has put in over half a year’s work to bring new content to The Director’s Cut. As well as improving many smaller aspects of the original game, he’s added more than twenty new items, several new locations, new side-quests, new dialogue for all characters, several new pieces of music, a brand new movie-like lighting system and new flashlight effects, and even two completely new endings.

Secondly, we’re working on the little details that make a great game ever better, including a control system that perfectly matches the PlayStation consoles, smoother scrolling and movement, and all those little details that enhance the overall feel of a game. We’re also working on PlayStation specific features, like the ability to manage inventory through the Vita touchscreen.

If you’re lucky enough to be at E3, head down to the Sony area and say hello, but if you’re watching from home, expect even more news about the definitive version of Lone Survivor to follow very soon! Let us know if you have any questions during E3 and we here at Curve or Jasper himself will do our best to answer them!

It’s with great pleasure that I can finally reveal the details of the PS3 and PS Vita versions of our horror game Lone Survivor!

Lone Survivor’s rich story continues to provoke heated debate amongst fans and critics alike. The soundtrack has also been consistently praised. I really could never have expected or hoped for such success, from what is a very personal game to me.

But what is Lone Survivor? For those who missed it the first time round, this is a psychological-survival-adventure, where the choice of how to survive is up to you. It’s the last record of our nameless, masked protagonist, holed-up in a city full of diseased monsters, starving and exhausted.

When we join him on his quest, he has already begun to question whether what he sees is even real. You can choose to sneak through the game without firing a single shot, or to kill everything in your path. You can eat and sleep well, or resort to drugs to keep going. You can search for survivors, or try to escape the city alone. You can look after your mental health, or descend into madness…

More than anything, I wanted Lone Survivor to be a game that approaches issues rarely touched on in games – from the shattering effects of grief, through mental health issues, to the examination of drug use and abuse. It’s one of the reasons the game took more than four years to create.

Critics cite the combination of meaningful choices presented to the player (this is a game in which you can genuinely role-play), the ‘virtual pet’ survival mechanics, the ‘invisible psychologist’, and the use of dream-logic as a combination that’s genuinely bold and new.

It’s been a lifelong dream of mine to release one of my games on a console, especially of the Sony variety (the PlayStation family is still my favorite). I have the utmost confidence in Curve, who are handling the conversion, to produce the ultimate version of the game — their excellent track record speaks for itself.

To top it off, I’ve secretly been devoting a lot time and resources into adding additional content into the game, initially exclusive to PS3 and PS Vita. As well as Trophies, Cross-Buy and Cross-Play support, the PS version will feature (amongst other things) 19 new items, new dialogue with all NPCs, two extensive new side quests and a brand new ‘Yellow’ ending, featuring an exclusive piece of music. We are also investigating touch control for movement and inventory use. This version really will be enhanced in every way!

I hope you enjoy the game. For those who’ve already supported it, thank you so much. I can’t wait to share the new content with all of you in July.

Oh, hm. Well boo. If you’ll remember, Lone Survivor maestro Jasper Byrne recently announced that he was leaving behind the cobweb-coated confines of survival-horror to enter a realm one part Dark Souls and one part Zelda. I quite enjoy both of those things, and Lone Survivor pushed all of my most precious of buttons in highly sensual ways. I was, then, quite excited about Byrne’s latest and (potentially) greatest. But now, I am markedly less excited, because it’s somewhat tough to get my hopes up for something that no longer exists.

With Halloween closing in fast, Patrick returns to the abyss with a more recent favorite, and probably plays more Clock Tower SNES. Also Minecraft. Sort of.

Emotional indie horror adventure Lone Survivor is one of the incredibly dark highlights of a very well lit year. There are plenty of games made by a single person but it’s still a wonder to play something in which the entire design, from music to narrative, feel like they’re so much a product of an individual’s skills and personality. I’ve been eager to see what Jasper Byrne will do next and, not that I am spying on him or anything, I know he’s quite partial to the punishing realms of Dark Souls. Today, he shares some artwork and ideas for a new project, including early prototypes, and he acknowledges the influence of From’s RPG. “…it may be Zelda x Demon’s Souls”, says he. I say, “yes please”. Take a look.

Following on from our discussion of the game’s development and inspirations, this concluding part of our interview with Jasper Byrne, Lone Survivor’s creator, explores some of the themes and moods invoked by the horror adventure. The fourth wall is sundered, dreams are dissected and just what the heck are those pills all about? Spoilers, obviously.

I love Lone Survivor. It reduced me to a whimpering pile of sweat and tears – much like all the other things I’ve ever loved. It was, in my eyes, a wonderfully complete and coherent experience, so any further additions are survival-horror-friendly gravy – which probably has, like, eyeballs in it or something. Creator Jasper Byrne, however, has seen fit to make a whole slew of tweaks en route to a Steam release (currently on sale for £5.59), dubbing the final product Lone Survivor Codename: Red. Chief among them? A new “red” ending, which will apparently become even more robust in a “yellow” update planned for release later this year.

In the first part of a sprawling conversation about his spectacular indie horror adventure, Lone Survivor, sole creator Jasper Byrne talks about the development process, audio and visual design, and some of the inspirations that went into creating the sinister and sentimental nightmare. There’s nothing that should spoil the game for those who haven’t played it. Thematic analysis and further love for David Lynch shall be expressed in a spoiler-laden continuation, which is coming soon.

I've had at least one little nightmare thanks to Lone Survivor, and that's a good thing. It wouldn't surprise me if Jasper Byrne's new creation were some photorealistic splatter orgy like Dead Space, but Lone Survivor looks like it locked itself up back in 1985 and just now had the guts to peek outs...
