adding on to the polluted lake theory, the birds could have been dying because they were eating the fish, which had toxins in them, which resulted in both the birds and the fish dying. this kind of stuff happens all the time when it involves too much of a bad thing getting into the habitat of whatever creature is there, it's just on a larger scale this time
but that's just a theory, there could be other realistic and logical explanations for this

the crab/fish deaths are blamed on the cold weather. it can't possibly be toxins/poison. also the bee's were proved to be dying from some sort of disease.
