Wii U's lazy backwards compatibility consists of rebooting into "Wii mode"

Still limited to a tiny 512MB of space. Can't play virtual console games with the new gamepad or pro controller. Wii Points can still only be used in the Wii Shop. Your original Wii is wiped clean after you do the transfer, so you can't go back.

This is the main reason I'm not keeping my Wii U. I just wanted to pop in a Wii disc and play, not have a dual-boot console. If they require you to re-purchase VC games for Wii U, there will be rioting in the streets.

Reply by Wootman Nov 20 2012 05:08 GMT
how do you not see any problems with the wii u
Reply by Nastasia Nov 20 2012 06:55 GMT
How's the miiverse though. I'd much sooner trust you than generic gaming reviewer show not biased at all.

in the case of the wii gettign wiped after doing your transfer, they told you this would be the case. this was the same case with transferring from the dsi to the 3ds.
further, i dont think they'll make you repurchase VC games. i'm pretty sure those get transferred over, if it's the same as the dsi to 3ds transfer.
Reply by darkz Nov 20 2012 14:36 GMT
Yes they tell you, but it still sucks. And yes the VC games are transferred, but they are stuck in "Wii mode". I have an eery feeling they might make us rebuy "Wii U enhanced" VC games to get them to run on the gamepad.

Also can't you copy your stuff (saves games etc) to an SD card, take it out , do the transfer, the put it all back in the Wii with the SD card?
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 20 2012 19:19 GMT
True, you can copy saves back depending on the game (not Smash Bros or Mario Kart) but nothing else.
Reply by Francis Nov 20 2012 19:44 GMT
but you can have vitrual console games on sd cards as well
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 20 2012 19:50 GMT
Only data in your main system memory will be transferred. VC games stored on your SD card will have to be redownloaded later from the Wii U's "Wii mode" Wii Shop Channel. And the VC games you had stored on your SD card will not work anywhere
Reply by Francis Nov 20 2012 19:56 GMT
Also I forgot to mention that any Wii Channel that uses WiiConnect24 will not be transferred.. Everybody Votes, Nintendo Channel, Mario Kart Channel, message board, etc
Reply by Francis Nov 20 2012 20:00 GMT
why would you want to transfer anyways? I mean, that implies you don't have homebrew installed on your wii by now...

yeah that's pretty much the trump card in this conversation
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 20 2012 20:14 GMT
The issue with leaving the stuff on the Wii is that games could theoretically be copied across to multiple WiiUs. The only other way to prevent it would be to set up some kind of flag in the data files on the Wii that marks items as being transferred, which would require modifying every item to add this flag (as well as a firmware update to support it) and it would still be circumventable if people find the location in the files and reset it.

also inb4 they release a new version of the Wii U that fixes half these problems, just to *crag* over the people who bought the first Wii U.
Reply by Fortran Nov 20 2012 21:14 GMT
Nintendo wouldn't be that *crag*ing dumb, Microsoft maybe. Sony maybe. But nutty hasn't ever made a major system upgrade, only handhelds.

*nintendo
(i want to kill whoever made autocorrect incapable of being shut off)
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 20 2012 21:51 GMT
turns out you can just insert a Wii disc and it will automatically reboot into the Wii game. I guess that's better than nothing, though you still have to wait like 15 seconds for it to start.
Reply by Francis Nov 20 2012 23:05 GMT
Didn't the Wii take like 15 seconds anyways? Also franny tell us how sexy those HD remastered Wii games look.
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 21 2012 01:16 GMT

You're kidding me!!!!That sucks.....How do you do thetransfer anyway? Are GameCube games being released for VC??I hope so.

That's heartbreaking :(

someone gave somewhat of an explanation for why nutty is being such retards http://alhuggins.tumblr.com/post/361286199...

Wait what? How is this any different than what nintendo has done in the past? They make a console with some gimmicky add-on, release a bunch of extra stuff for it that rarley gets the spotlight, and the moves onto the next console. rinse and repeat.
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 21 2012 15:44 GMT
Yes, but this time they're really milking it. The Wii U and it's controller are expensive and absolutely no effort went into the system. I think this is just something companies do sometimes, the "how gullible is our market"/"how little can we spend" test.
Reply by Fortran Nov 21 2012 15:52 GMT
Either that or its a case of forcing a technology upgrade (the HD graphics) upon a play concept (the Wii u gamepad) which I wouldn't put beyond nintendo.
Reply by Super-Claus Nov 21 2012 16:14 GMT
shadoo you are annoyingly cynical idk how that's even possible
Reply by darkz Nov 21 2012 16:15 GMT
The Wii U is actually really neat. I like the gamepad concept, having Nintendo games in HD, the social features are quirky and fun, and it has a usable web browser. Sure it would be great if Nintendo had a powerhouse showcase of computing technology, but that's not what Nintendo does, they just want to make a fun toy, and the WIi U is fun and far from a failure.
My only gripe is that the Wii U, even though it's very similar to the Wii, has such shoddy integration with the Wii software.
Reply by Francis Nov 21 2012 16:40 GMT
Depending on how the WiiU is wired internally, this could be more of a software issue than a hardware issue, meaning it's possible for Nintendo to release a patch to improve things later on.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Nov 21 2012 18:20 GMT
gold didn't you read meow's post at the beginning of this thread?
Reply by Fortran Nov 21 2012 18:34 GMT

Darkz, Shadoo hates everything. You just have to live with it.
I'm impressed with the Wii U myself, but the whole ''Wii U transfer'' business annoys me. Still, it's a small price to pay for an overall good system.

darkz, you should meet my dad
Reply by MM Nov 21 2012 21:03 GMT
lol fortan you're an idiot. nintendo isn't going to release a upgraded console with different features that *crag* over the original buyers. one they only rerelease handhelds, never consoles. when have you ever seen a Wii XL or GameCube SP or something like that? never. they aren't sega, and they aren't mircosoft.
Reply by Wootman Nov 21 2012 22:17 GMT
Why do all of you think companies never change? You seriously think Nintendo will be good old Nintendo for the rest of eternity? How old are some of you?
Reply by Fortran Nov 21 2012 22:22 GMT

The real question is: how old are YOU?

Reply by Grievous Nov 21 2012 22:23 GMT
nintendo poops out gold. every console release they do makes them a ton of profit. why are they going to need to change? if they change the fanbase will be PISSED at them and they will not make the same amount of money anymore.
Reply by Wootman Nov 21 2012 22:25 GMT
And as with all things digi, the topic has finally degraded into fecal matter chat.
