Gliding through the kingdom of Lemuria for the first time is a surreal experience. When Gary and I got our hands on Child of Light at Digital Days, we spent a large chunk of our demo just gazing at the dreamy landscapes. The game’s smooth hand-drawn style is built using UbiArt Framework, the technology behind Rayman Origins, Rayman Legends and the other recently announced title, Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Playing as the heroine Aurora, I took several moments to just soak in her gravity-defying hair as it flowed behind her like a trail of watercolor as I moved across the screen. Gary played as Igniculus, a glowing ball who serves as Aurora’s guide (and light source) through the kingdom. While the game can be played solo – with the ability to switch to Igniculus as needed – Child of Light is a richer experience when you have someone seated beside you experiencing this world together. That said, these characters have such different playstyles, which is why we’re sharing our distinct impressions in two discrete parts.
