you probably don't appreciate the artistic, musical, or atmospheric beauty, don't like puzzle-solving, or don't like the subtle philosophy and satire that surround the game It isn't supposed to be some action-packed Mario game, and if you find it boring because of that, you have a shallow view of what makes a great game "great"
This just in, Lord Crump thinks that you must make games as pretentious as possible to make them good. To be honest, Braid wasn't all that memorable. Some of the puzzles were ok, I don't get the "artistic beauty" part or why I should give a *crag* about it and I've heard better music.
Your accusation of me just liking it becuase I'm expected to like it would work, if it wasn't for the fact that most of the people that criticize it normally don't play games of its genre to begin with. *crag*, I've heard many action game fans who don't play puzzle games regularly come in and dis on it, and those who claim it's too short or too easy hardly even bothered with the optional puzzles (Which make up the bulk of the game). Again, calling me out for liking the game because it is pretentious doesn't quite work. Most of the people (Who I've encountered, at least) who dislike it are in the same calibur of stupidity as Soulja Boy's review of the game. Only that their opinions are real, not just poor attempts at trolling. As for not getting the "artistic beauty" part or not liking the music, I can only assume you don't look for art in games, Steve, as it is certainly FAR more artistic than most of the heavy hitters on the PS3 and 360; heck, far more artistic than most of the games of this generation overall.
I'd also like to point out that calling a game "pretentious" is the laziest statement anyone can make about a game; every time there is a well-made game that people praise for its artistic qualities, someone is bound to call it "pretentious" just to show contrast to the critical consensus. Considering that Braid isn't the most popular game ever made, I wonder why people don't call the likes of Ocarina of Time or Halo "pretentious" when they're certainly far more popular and assumed to be of an incredible greatness. In other words, if you're going to call Braid "pretentious" when it really isn't all that popular, you should certainly call the games that really are pretentious "pretentious," as well.
Because I didslike it iI'm an idiot? I don't like the game and I don't get it's "art" and I've heard better music. I called it pretentious because I think it is. I don't have a problem with you liking it, I was just annoyed with you telling someone that they're shallow and unappreciative of art because they don't like a *crag*ing game. I don't like how you called me an idiot of the same caliber of "soulja boy" is just because you disagree with my opinion. I called it pretentious because I believe that it IS. I wasn't just trying to get sand in your barnacle-encrusted vagina. I have bought the game, I've completed it and I just don't like it. Something doesn't have to be popular to be pretentious, I'm calling it pretentious because people are acting as if there's a huge life-changing meaning to it when there's not. I don't call ocarina of Time or Halo pretentious because I don't think they are, I think they're both boring and uninteresting for completely different reasons so kidly *crag* off. I just remembered why I hate you dumbasses, bye.
I never called you an "idiot" (I said that most of the people who I've met who dislike the game are idiots, which is COMPLETELY different), so there goes half of your rant. Secondly, as you played the "freedom of speech" card, you do have every right to say how you don't like Braid. However, that works both ways- in addition to you being able to say why you dislike it, I have every right to question why you don't like it (This is, after all, a discussion forum), and if I feel like you don't have a good reason as to not liking the game and would like to point out how your arguments aren't good at all, I have the right to do so. There goes the second half of your rant.
And as for the definition of "pretentious," pretentious refers to being characterized by an assumption of dignity or importance. Braid isn't very well known outside the gaming circles, and CERTAINLY isn't viewed as such an important game as some Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Halo, or whatever other mainstream "big name" videogame titles out there. Because of their "legendary status" among so many people, I don't see why you can disagree with them being so pretentious but call Braid pretentious at the same time.
To be pretentious, I think you have to describe yourself as being important. If other people think Braid is important or deep or whatever, it's not Braid's fault. Halo, on the other hand, is definitely pretentious.
Crump I never said anything about it having to be an action packed game. i've played games that aren't action games and they were pretty good. hell i've even played better puzzle games. I just don't see what makes braid so special. Okay the style of the game is kind of unique, but, uniqueness doesn't measure quality.
god damn i need an edit button one more thing, how the *crag* can you say it's more artistic than any other recent game? Oh what the painted style makes it more artistic? Just because painting is a well known art style doesn't mean it's more artistic than every other game.
Art is "deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions". Most games do not do this, instead they do the bare minimum required for gameplay. For example, I found most of the art direction in NSMB to be particularly uninspiring. Braid is a visual and audible masterpiece compared to NSMB.
Uh, Nastasia, it's an example. Examples are given so that, upon understanding the example, you can extrapolate that to other things yourself. Do you seriously expect me to list out all games that are less artistic than Braid?
i loved the music
i loved the puzzles
the story was magnificent, with the ending being a true plot-twister but naturally not everyone will agree so can we just drop our opinions on braid and get back to our lives?
Well that's a pretty good argument and I will admit that I used the word pretentious in the wrong context and I'm sorry. But the reason I started the whole was because you said because somebody didn't like braid they were shallow and didn't appreciate artistic and atmospheric beauty Just because we don't like it doesn't mean we don't appreciate art, or art in games. I just don't like this game, I didn't enjoy the gameplay, the puzzles WERE unique and creative but to me they weren't fun. I enjoy games where I can gut a *crag*ing dragon or shoot lots and lots of people with guns that fire rabid kittens and if that makes me "shallow" I guess I'm *crag*ing shallow.

DON'T TALK SHIT ABOUT BRAID UNTIL YOU'RE ABOUT HALF WAY THROUGH IT
I THOUGHT IT WAS A DIFFICULT PUZZLE GAME AND VERY GOOD

most of the puzzles i did i didn't figure out until I accidentally did them.
Did the main character's ugly face get on anyone else's nerves?
