I downloaded a 2D MMO creator and am trying my hand on creating a game with a Digibutter/Bitlands/SPM theme. I am currently looking for help in the following areas:

  • Mapping - The engine uses a built-in map editor, so this part isn't too complicated.
  • Spriting - This is where I need the most help, since I suck at spriting.
  • Hosting - Currently the only way I can host the game is via my home PC, which means I won't be able to run it 24/7. If anyone knows of a free/cheap host that allows the running of servers and programs (specifically, a windows executable), please let me know. (Francis may be able to host, but he's very busy at the moment and hasn't been able to try yet.)

I've tried doing things like this in the past but they've always failed for various reasons. Provided there's enough interest on the site however, this might actually work.

sure i'll help out. What is the creator are you using?
Reply by Francis Apr 12 2010 16:13 GMT

I'm using a program called XtremeWorlds. It's the first engine I've tried that isn't hard to use or crashes repeatedly.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 12 2010 16:15 GMT

I could only do the playing part.

Reply by DarkBlueAce Apr 12 2010 16:20 GMT
Make it browser based. Integrate it into the site.
Reply by MM Apr 12 2010 16:36 GMT
I'm zipping a copy of the client now, hopefully I've set up my firewall properly to allow entry onto the game.
As for browser integration, if anyone can suggest a way to do that I'll be happy to give it a shot.

Server's up, client can be found here. Let me know if you get any errors.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 12 2010 17:02 GMT
Had to bring the server down for the night, it ought to be back tomorrow though.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 12 2010 20:05 GMT
I can play it and possibly do some spriting.
Reply by Popple Apr 12 2010 20:10 GMT
Francis, if u like it, host it.
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 12 2010 21:42 GMT

I'll definitely try this out. Expect random spur-of-the-moment "this would be awesome" suggestions from me over time.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 13 2010 03:01 GMT

Server online and original post updated.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 13 2010 07:23 GMT

The game's playing some wierd music because it doesn't have the updated music files, I'll release a new version of the client when that's sorted.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 13 2010 10:56 GMT

Download this and extract the contents into the client folder to get the updated sounds. Also, you can now go east out of the Bitlands to find the Void and the first powerful enemy of the game.

Reply by MM Apr 13 2010 16:50 GMT
keep it up all day faggot
Reply by MM Apr 13 2010 16:51 GMT
It looks like it's up to me.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 13 2010 16:57 GMT

Server's down for the night.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 13 2010 19:14 GMT

I've set up my computer so that the server will run whenever I have the computer on. Does anybody have any suggestions on the dedicated hosting issue?

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 15 2010 13:42 GMT

Thanks to a rather clever piece of scripting, the server status is now an image that is automatically updated to show whether the server is on or off (updated every 10 minutes).

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 15 2010 18:05 GMT

Haha, just downloaded the update. I was going to suggest the Open Plane!

In fact...I have a looped version that works with the Wii (seamless loop).
If there's a way I can implement that into this, I will.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 15 2010 18:37 GMT
To prevent the copy of the server files I sent to Francis from getting outdated, the server has been brought down until I know whether or not he will be able to host it.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 15 2010 19:20 GMT

I'll get to work on seeing what I can do about the seamless loop. My only gripe is the intro might have to be sacrificed.

This program needs a better music system. Probably an Intro file and Loop file.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 15 2010 19:25 GMT

I can't seem to save it as a MIDI...this is a problem...oh god Goldwave crashed trying to load the loop, I think.
I'll try again.
That's better.
My format-manipulation skills are pro.

Francis hasn't been able to find the time to run the server at the moment, so I'm bringing it back up on my PC until the situation changes.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 06:19 GMT

Mage class added.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 11:28 GMT
why am i getting 5kb/s from the link...
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 15:16 GMT
The download or the game itself?
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 15:30 GMT
Download. also, I finished it, but abhorrently server is down
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 15:33 GMT
Have a look in IP configuration, make sure it's set to 93.96.201.18 since I might have accidentally changed it before uploading the file.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 15:35 GMT

Even when I run it as administrator [right click > run as administrator]:

DLL register failed, you do not have permission to register dlls. This program must be run as Administrator.

I am the administrator.

Reply by DarkBlueAce Apr 17 2010 15:47 GMT
Right Click > Run As Administrator
Reply by Slim Apr 17 2010 15:48 GMT
port #?
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 15:52 GMT
wups, not port, ip pass
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:05 GMT
IP pass is just the port, 7234.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 16:08 GMT
ok, i got the params right, but its creating an acc for 3 min now
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:13 GMT
Hmm. I'm not seeing you in the account list. Only thing I can suggest without knowing what's going on is to restart the program and try again.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 16:18 GMT
did so, trice. Its not sending an error, just constantly loading
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:21 GMT
ok im running in compatibility mode
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:23 GMT
Compatibility mode shouldn't do much - I'm running it fine on Windows 7. Only things I can suggest are to double check the IP and Port settings, and to try running the Register Files program in the client folder.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 16:26 GMT
i reinstated, now i didn't get layout error, which i got first time
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:27 GMT
maybe its the current download missing a file. Although I assume the main app runs regesterfiles.exe which it the one not working for me
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:32 GMT
send me source code; tkolomatski@hotmail.com
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 16:33 GMT
Just uploaded a new client with some updated music. This one definitely works and has the correct port settings, I'm running it myself.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 16:35 GMT

Post a link to the latest upload; I need to eat and then I'll probably work on the next 3 songs.

I need more weapons
Reply by Slim Apr 17 2010 16:58 GMT
"new" client is same size and still has odd ip, are u sure it's different
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 17 2010 17:27 GMT
Odds are the file size is slightly different but too small a change to be displayed. As for the IP, that one definitely works.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 18:14 GMT

If anyone's interested in mapping, developing or spriting please let me know (either in the topic or via PMs) and I'll make the arrangements in-game. Remember that if you abuse your powers, I can and will find out and you will be jailed or banned depending on what you did.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 18:40 GMT

I said I did right click > run as administrator, but that didn't work.

Reply by DarkBlueAce Apr 17 2010 19:45 GMT
@DarkBlueAce: Does the game itself run without need of the Register Files program? It's usually used if there's an error showing up, but if you do need to register the DLLs copy the file to the System32 folder (or whatever it is on your PC), open cmd as administrator and run regsvr32 dllname.dll.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 17 2010 19:50 GMT

I managed to fix it.

http://www.spriters-resource.com/custom_ed...
this page has TONS of sprites from almost all the mario games, and some great sprite renditions of SPM characters. give credit to whoever made the sprites you use
Reply by Super-Claus Apr 17 2010 21:18 GMT
if mapping isn't too complicated I can give it a whirl
Reply by Slim Apr 17 2010 23:36 GMT
@Slim: I've upgraded you to Mapper rank and placed a Dev Key (opens all doors, including the locked stairway in Fort Francis) in your inventory. F1 opens the admin console, all the commands you need are in there.
@DimFish: That site should definitely help, but it'll probably take time to get everything up and running.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 18 2010 07:21 GMT
kk, I see new client
Reply by FrozenWinters Apr 18 2010 15:14 GMT

Just finished uploading a new client with a few extra sprites.

Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 18 2010 15:30 GMT
I've pretty much mapped every area now
Reply by Slim Apr 18 2010 18:50 GMT
Is the server going to be up later today?
I want to work on adding more weapons
Reply by Slim Apr 18 2010 20:04 GMT
GO ONLINE ALREADY DFLKJHNLS
Reply by Slim Apr 19 2010 00:08 GMT

So I haven't been paying attention all day.
A general update to progress would be lovely.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 19 2010 08:13 GMT
The existing maps have all been revamped by Slim, and the Tile Pool is currently under construction.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 19 2010 08:20 GMT

Tile Pool, eh? That shouldn't be hard for me to loop, since I've made a .brstm of it already.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 19 2010 08:51 GMT
How am I supposed to work on it if it goes offline when I get home from school everyday?
Reply by Slim Apr 19 2010 20:54 GMT
I can't help being alseep. If you have any ideas on how I can run it 24/7 please suggest them. Also, today I start school so the server won't be on most of the (GMT) morning and some of the afternoon, but that shouldn't be a problem for you Americans.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 20 2010 06:17 GMT
Can't you just leave your computer on and turn off the screen or something
Reply by Slim Apr 20 2010 16:01 GMT
I would if I could, but my parents don't appreciate me leaving the computer on overnight and I expect they would complain if I started leaving it on every night.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 20 2010 16:45 GMT
do it anyway
Reply by Slim Apr 20 2010 18:58 GMT

Tile Pool music is ready.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 20 2010 20:43 GMT
Gonna release a new client shortly containing some new sprites, a new music file and a fix to the IP settings that should prevent my dynamic IP from causing any problems in the future.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 22 2010 20:04 GMT
New client's up at the usual location.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 22 2010 20:39 GMT
I've just finished adding a new feature to Nerr Online: Premium Items.
At Bitlands S there is now a cave containing a shop filled with extra powerful items, which you can purchase using Premium Coins. These items are currently more powerful than all the other items in the game, and will remain so - as new, more powerful items are added I will update the Premium Items so that they are constantly the most powerful.
The first (and currently only) way to gain Premium Coins is to fight O'Chunks, who has a low chance of dropping a coin when defeated. As time goes on, I'll be adding more ways to earn these coins, as well as new Premium Items to purchase.

Why does it say my password is incorrect even though I have it set to save my password? @.@

Reply by Linkshot Apr 25 2010 18:42 GMT
I don't know. Would you like me to reset the password for you and see if that helps?
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 25 2010 18:46 GMT

Yeah, that'd be lovely.

Reply by Linkshot Apr 25 2010 18:48 GMT
Changed, PMd you the new password.
Reply by Gold Prognosticus Apr 25 2010 18:51 GMT

All done.
