The battle between Mann and Machine continues with the launch of 'Coal Town,' a museum-themed map for Team Fortress 2. Featuring "many informative placards about the fascinating details of life in a turn-of-the-century mining community," Coal Town is the second piece of content added as part of TF2's new co-op mode.

Today's update also includes upgrade stations, allowing players who collect money from downed robots to boost stats and skills of weapons, items, and abilities.

Each class in the free-to-play shooter has their own upgrades available, such as the Soldier's ability to empower his entire team. More details on the upgrades are available on the official TF2 blog.

Have you seen the movie Alien? Remember how tough that alien was? Well, imagine if there was a version of Alien but with like hundreds of aliens. One: That would be a great movie that we now own the idea for. Two: The impossible odds of that situation pretty accurately describe the trouble you’re in for when that carrier opens on Wednesday and Gray Mann’s robot army pours out. Luckily, we solved the enormous plot hole that would have plagued our currently-in-production Alien sequel by offering MvM’s plucky heroes a whole mess of deadly upgrades for their weapons, items and abilities, which you can read about here.

We’re also unveiling a new museum-themed map called Coal Town. It features many informative placards about the fascinating details of life in a turn-of-the-century mining community, which you can read when you’re lying on the ground holding your own guts in while a robot stomps on your neck.

It seems Red and Blu finally got over their differences and decided to unite against a common enemy: the machines. Team Fortress 2 is getting a new co-op mode on August 15 called Mann vs. Machine, pitting six players against waves of robotic dopplegangers.

The players must defend Mann Co. as the robots attempt to plant a bomb, their only respite during the onslaught the "opportunity to upgrade abilities and weapons" as the waves progress. If the players do make it to the end, they can look forward to unlocking new achievements and earning "incredible loot."

This Horde mode variant will include new maps and content, bit by bit of which will be showcased daily leading up to Mann vs. Machine's launch on August 15.

Here we go! After two years of build-up, Valve have finally taken the wraps off the long-rumoured new mode and third faction for their game of ratatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatatboomdead.

‘Mann vs Machine‘ brings a co-op horde mode to Team Fortress 2, as five players battle legions of robots shaped in the image of TF2′s familiar classes. They are the Gray Horde, and they’re there for you to kill in incredible numbers. “Band together to survive all of the robot waves in a variety of missions to earn incredible loot and unlock new achievements,” it says here. And you get to do that from August 15th. That being tomorrow. Here’s a trailer for the new mode. It is a good trailer. It has good music. It has a Heavy with a head of steel. It has the suggestion of an enormous foe. It has me thinking “this is probably a very smart way to get people (back) into the game who’ve been put off by the all-knowing frenzy of the devout playerbase.” It also has me thinking “AI officially in TF2? Someone’s going to do fascinating things with that, eh?”(more…)

This is Saxton. Hale! And that legion business in the title was a Bible quote to let you know how serious this all is: Bible serious. So listen up, mercs. Some puny coward's built an army of robots to fight his fights for him. I don't know if robots have human emotions, but if not, they’re doing a Saxxy-worthy impression of them, because they look mad. Also, Reddy tells me they’re heading straight at Mann Co.

#teamfortress2 Diehard Team Fortress 2 fans have spent all weekend sleuthing out Friday's tease, in which a "Gray Mann" is revealed to be the brother of Redmond and Blutarch Mann, owners of the game's RED and BLU teams. Tons of evidence suggest this is going to be a robot faction, which Valve itself all but confirmed today in two more clue dumps—the will of the brothers' father and, more importantly, a new webcomic in which Gray is shown for the first time. Have dreams of a promotional Team Fortress 2 'King of the Hill' map set in a Chinese cityscape been keeping you up nights since the free-to-play shooter's launch in 2007? "Well, your oddly specific and scarily prescient dreams have come true," the official TF2 blog has revealed.

Dubbed 'Kong King,' the new map brings Team Fortress 2 into the urban environment created in collaboration with "Sleeping Dogs and community member Valentin Levillain," the blog added.

This is the second cross-promotional effort between Valve's Team Fortress 2 and the upcoming United Front Games open-world undercover drama Sleeping Dogs, with pre-order customers of the game getting special Triad-inspired items in TF2.

For more on Sleeping Dogs, check out the replay of our recent live stream of the game with senior producer Jeff O'Connell, and don't forget to giggle at my terrible mouse/keyboard driving skills.

Were you thinking, "I really like playing TF2, but I wish there was a King of the Hill map set in a Chinese cityscape"? Well, your oddly specific and scarily prescient dreams have come true! Introducing Kong King - TF2’s first city-themed map! - created in collaboration with Sleeping Dogs and community member Valentin Levillain, aka 3Dnj.
We’re a little disappointed that Valentin is spending all of his time making TF2 maps and not fulfilling his true destiny as a roguishly handsome super-villain, but it gives us a chance to finish our costumes for our inevitable battle atop a snowy mountain where we will fight for the love of Cassandra Prosciutto.
You may be able to capture her physical form with your hyper-advanced laser-traps, Levillain, but you will never capture…her heart!

#teamfortress There's a blood-stain on the logo atop the Team Fortress 2 website. A reader at the message board NeoGAF noticed today that it links to a letter. And in that letter is a story, a story that reads like a tease, a tease that seems to be pointing to something new for Team Fortress... a third faction? More »

Thanks for your patience, everybody! And a really big thanks to our first round of testers, who were instrumental in helping us make the SFM a better user experience.

They were SO helpful, in fact, that we're happy to announce that SFM Beta is now open to everyone, for free, as of right now. We've also provided a new SFM-specific page in the Steam Community where you can view, rate and discuss all the latest user-created videos.

Plus, just so we don't all overdose on "Meet The Heavy" shorts, we've decided to release a new session, to give all you folks something new to riff on. So get out your guitar (and some audio recording equipment) and prepare to "Meet The Engineer".

You can download the Source Filmmaker here on Steam.

eXtelevision has been putting together a fundraiser to help send two North American teams to the European Team Fortress 2 tournament at Multiplay i46! VanillaTV has been covering the events and will be hosting a night of exhibition matches over the next two weekends between the top two winning teams in North America.

Classic Mixup took first place in the eXtv-hosted i46 qualifier and the ESEA LAN champions, Leviathan Gaming, were runners up. These two teams are hoping to both be destined to i46, but need additional funds to make the trip happen. Visit eXtv and Vanilla TF2 for more details.

The first of several replays have been made live from the Team Fortress 2 Mix-up #4. These are from the event where players raised an impressive $9,664 for children's hospitals around the world and a chance to play several matches against and with various community celebrities. Much fun was had and we're already looking forward to another.
