#nmaxpayne We've already passed on details about the pre-order loot that early birds in the United States will get with their reservation money, that being early access to the Cemetery multiplayer map. Europe will be getting that same online arena by pre-ordering from the following retailers: More »

#maxpayne3 It's never easy taking over an IP from somebody else. Especially when that IP is so iconic. Luckily, Rockstar Games is the sort of company who rises to a challenge and rarely lets us down. Although Max Payne has been in development for what seems like an eternity now, the closer we finally get to launch, the better and better it looks. More »

Max Payne 3 is set in the slums and high-rolling cities of São Paulo, Brazil. To truly get a feel for the land and its society, Rockstar developers and researchers traveled to the heart of the city to study its law-enforcement branches, its extensive weapons collection and to track down local casting, the Rockstar newswire reads. São Paulo has become infamous for its favelas, gang violence and illegal trafficking, perhaps because it's all set against such a lush, photogenic landscape.
It appears the Rockstar team watched a few documentaries that take advantage of São Paulo's dark beauty, as it's able to name-drop such titles as Favela Rising and Bus 174. So, we're sure the devs were completely prepared for the reality of São Paulo's slums.

Maaaax, dearest of all my friends. You're looking quite well for your March debut. I see you still know how to use a gun, but why no pictures of you shooting while diving through the air? Oh, there it is!

Can digital information really constitute a barrage? I don’t know, but I’m scared. Barrages sound nasty to me, but Rockstar have pledged to send a barrage of Max Payne 3 info at us over “the coming weeks and months.” I’ve looked at the first missive from their asset-cannon, and it’s only some screenshots rather than gunshot or a disease-riddled corpse, so I think we’re safe for now. They’ve also included some captions on these screenshots, which I shall quote verbatim below.(more…)

Marketing! What can’t/won’t it do? One thing it can and will do is promote a videogame on Twitter with the sweet promise of having your face be transplanted onto an in-game character model. Specifically, a character model in Max Payne 3, which might well mean that the winners will be gunned down by Max on one of his righteous rampages. Let’s just hope it’s suave Max rather than fat Max, eh?(more…)

Good news: You could get shot if you win Rockstar's Max Payne 3 contest, which gives entrants the chance to appear in the game. Rockstar needs more face variants for its gang members in Max Payne 3's multiplayer component, and if you tweet using the #MaxPayne3 hashtag (from now through January 13th) your mug could make it in.

You'll also need to follow @RockStarGames, and note that the company reserves the right to turn you down once you've been chosen for consideration -- sorry, Eric Stoltz. Also, Cher.

(Actually, either one might make a good ruthless gang leader, now that we think about it. They both know a lot of bikers, after all.)

Want you to know about the multiplayer contents of Max Payne 3? Oh, what’s wrong with you? And them? Max Payne shouldn’t be multiplayer! There’s him versus the world! And I’m him! But shush John, this is Rockstar, and they don’t exactly rush into multiplayer do they? No, I suppose not. So are you going to actually find out what it is before making a big fuss? Oh, okay then. Good.

The multiplayer component of Max Payne 3 is shaping up to be absolutely insane, provided the oodles of ambition outlined in this recent IGN preview is fully realized. The competitive branch of the game will focus on "Gang War" mode, an objective-based team mode which sees player's goals change dynamically based on the events of the previous round. For instance, the player with the most kills in the last round may have a bounty on their head in the following match, while a certain territory your team stole in the previous game will have to be fended off in future encounters.

Players will customize their loadouts using Bursts -- usable perks which become more powerful the longer the player goes without using them. These include intriguing abilities like Paranoia, which makes the opposing team see their teammates as enemies, simultaneously enabling friendly fire. There's also the series' trademark Bullet Time, which works by slowing down foes caught in the user's line of sight. Check out IGN for more info about how Multi-Max's abilities break down.

Multiplayer might, at first, not seem like a natural fit for Max Payne. As its title suggests, the series has always featured an intensely personal story, the harrowing portrait of a man pushed to his absolute limit and how he copes with that torment...

Gamespot have bagged a huge video interview with Max Payne 3′s art director, Rob Nelson, and you can see that below. Nelson starts out talking about the style of the game, with reference to the series’ inspiration in Hong Kong cinema, but also touching on the choice to set the new game in South America. The goes on to discuss some of the choices in physics and animation, and what that means for how the team are developing Max Payne’s gunplay potential for the new game. The interview clip also features a bunch of in-game footage.

Max Payne 3 will glide slow into our reticules in March of 2012.(more…)

#bully Lots of people loved Jimmy Hopkins, the squinty-eyed protagonist of Rockstar's Bully. Rockstar began a new Max Payne 3 video series today, covering the "design and technology" of the upcoming game. This first video seems to be an introduction to the concepts it'll get into in further videos, providing an overview of the animations, bullet time, AI, and cinematic techniques in the game.

Even if you're not interested in the specifics of the presentation, Rockstar demonstrates all of these concepts with gameplay footage! In other words, you get to watch a lot of Max Payne 3. You get to watch a lot of gunfights.

“Rockstar – forever counting down to the next trailer”, observes our Adam wryly. Indeed, this does appear to be their current MO – declaring a trailer’s arrival in advance, and hoping to cause internet frenzy during the wait. So, this one, which I believe is our first substantial look at the game in action, will unlock at 5pm. I’ll leave it below for you – feel free to spend the next 15 minutes staring at a black box, or why not go and have a jog or plant a tree in the meantime? It is billed as “a first look at the targeting mechanics, movement and animation, enemy intelligence and other technical design innovations going into building an advanced, intense and immersive action-shooter with Max Payne 3.”

Hands up who’s hot for targeting mechanics?(more…)

#maxpayne Gameplay-wise, the Max Payne titles get remembered for a few things: bullet time, the iconic shootdodge and using painkillers to refresh health. But things have changed since we last saw the hardboiled cop in Max Payne 2 eight years ago. Rockstar knows this and is tweaking the Payne formula a bit—but not too much—for the upcoming threequel. Two interviews with Gamespot reveals that there will be a cover mechanic in Max Payne 3 but that the grizzled ex-cop won't have regenerating health as is so common in shooters nowadays. Says Rockstar VP of Product Development Jeronimo Barrera: More »

As Max Payne reinvents himself for the modern generation, don't expect him to lean too hard into the brave new world of 3D. Rockstar's Dan Houser told Variety he's still unimpressed with the tech (even if it's possible Max Payne 3 will include it on PC).

"I don't think anyone has solved the riddle of how you make 3D an integral part of the gaming experience," he told the publication.

We'd like to take a moment here to take a firm stance in favor of utterly non-integral gaming innovations. Isn't that the whole point of 3D, sort of a George Mallory on Everest "Because it's there" type thing? We want to say here and now that the moment 3D has a purpose, we're gonna start pushing for 4D, and just wait until you see the glasses you'll need for that.

New shots of Max Payne 3 are always a welcome sight. Not due until March next year, we’re obviously still a way off from actually seeing anything useful, so clearly dripping out the odd picture here an there is the usual tedious PR game we all have to put up with for some reason. Still, by February we’ll be sick of the sight of it, so let’s make the most of still feeling that frisson of early excitement? I don’t know. I’m confused about what to be cross about. I’ll just be cross about everything.
