By the way, DICE isn't working on any games in the Battlefield: Bad Company universe right now. "We love the Bad Company series, but don't have it in active development," the Battlefield Twitter says. "Battlefield 4 is our main focus for the year." Sorry to ruin your day.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Liu has confirmed that DICE is still interested in developing new Battlefield Bad Company titles...

Speaking to The Guardian, Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Liu discussed the game's ongoing beta as well as other projects DICE may (or may not) have in the works. When asked about the disappointment expressed over the lack of vehicles in the beta, Liu put it down to the fact that it is indeed a beta test (we certainly hope so).

According to Liu, "We ran the alpha tests with a Rush map and we wanted to have some sort of reference so we could compare results - so we needed to have more-or-less the same map." Evidently this led to including Paris Metro - a linear Rush map with no vehicles - as the only map in the beta. For what it's worth, PC players will have a chance to try out Caspian Border, a much larger map with vehicles, throughout this weekend.

Liu also answered questions regarding the Battlefield: Bad Company series, saying that "we haven't killed Bad Company." He added that DICE doesn't plan on making Battlefield an annual title, largely because they don't want to hand development of any Battlefield game to another studio. "No studio can make an annual franchise by themselves," said Liu.

Other topics in the interview include the possibility of another downloadable Battlefield title and the learning curve involved in piloting (virtual) jets. Head over to The Guardian for the full interview.

As part of an eyewatering 2.6Gb cumulative patch known as Client R11, DICE have taken the bad out of Battlefield Bad Company 2. The bad in this case being the icky and pointless SecuROM DRM in non-Steam versions of the game. Hooray for small freedoms! The patch also brings some tasty-sounding performance improvements and bug-splats, as detailed more below.

Sadly, DICE claim expediency required that they didn’t also put out a smaller patch for people who’ve installed all the former updates, so you’ll need to bully your broadband connection into the full 2.6Gb for now. Both Steam and the non-Steam versions should auto-update with the new patch right about now.(more…)

Somalia is in bad shape, you guys. Two back-to-back seasons of inadequate rains have prevented the country's agricultural infrastructure from producing enough food to cover the needs of its people, and as a result roughly 3.7 million Somali citizens are in need of assistance. The situation is so dire in some parts of Somalia that the UN has declared it a famine, which could spread throughout the entire country in as little as two months.

It's bad, and once again, a group of intrepid gamers have taken it upon themselves to help when help is needed most. Battlefield community site Don't Revive Me Bro has joined forces with pro gaming organization Quantic Gaming, fellow community resource Battlefieldo, and DICE's own Daniel Matros to produce First Person Saviors, a 24-hour Battlefield: Bad Company 2 event benefiting Somalia's people.

The event, which started this morning at 9 AM GMT (5 AM EDT) and runs until that time tomorrow, urges players to join specially-marked "Somalian Hunger Relief SHR" servers, rather than their usual virtual homes. Donations will be accepted by Gamers Outreach, 100 percent of which will be passed along to the World Food Programme to aid in their humanitarian efforts.

In addition to the warm, fuzzy feeling you'll get from knowing you've done a good thing, people who donate are also automatically entered into drawings for prizes and giveaways, held at specific donation intervals. The event is also an opportunity to test your mettle against some of the best Bad Company 2 players in the world, as well as actual DICE employees. So get to it! Go kill some dudes, and help save millions.

Multiplay have given us a Battlefield: Bad Company 2 server to use while we warm up for Battlefield 3. It’s live now. Join me! You’ll probably need to search for it in the server browser, so the full name is Multiplay :: Rock, Paper, Shotgun UK Server. I believe the search is case sensitive.

#dice If you were somehow still holding out hope that the long delayed Battlefield 1943 for the PC would ever become more than a promise, give up now. Developer DICE has finally officially canceled that game (and another Battlefield project). More »

Battlefield 1943 for PC is not going to happen. Posting on the official Battlefield blog, Karl Magnus Troedsson, general manager of DICE, confirmed that both 1943 and Onslaught, a co-op add-on for Battlefield: Bad Company 2, have been "officially canceled." He states that the team is focusing all energy on Battlefield 3 in order to make it "the best Battlefield game ever" and "the biggest launch in DICE's history." (Good luck finding a game during the first three days!)

Battlefield 1943's delayed trek to PC had become hopeless in recent months, though company reps believed it was still set to deploy at some point when we followed up last summer. The downloadable experiment has been a resounding success on consoles, netting $16 million dollars for Electronic Arts.

Late last month Activision filed a motion to amend its countersuit against Vince Zampella and Jason West; specifically, it sought to include Electronic Arts as a cross-defendant after discovering that its largest competitor had schemed to "inflict serious harm on the company."

Today we learned that Activision's request has been approved and Electronic Arts - and the $400 million request for "actual and punitive damages" - has been officially added to the existing countersuit. Also added, or in this case removed, from the cross-complaint: the protective order responsible for many of the redacted sections that Activision insisted were "not truly 'confidential,' but merely embarrassing and damaging to Electronic Arts and its co-conspirators."

Your squad is in a helicopter, quickly approaching the objective. An engineer in the back repairs the ride while it feels the full brunt of the enemy's defensive placements. It's time to bail -- a homing dart hits the hull and as the subsequent rocket nears its destination, all too happy to relieve you of your up-to-that-point very useful conveyance, the whole squad jumps.

Once on the ground, your Recon guy drops a mortar strike on the objective and, through this generous application of explosive force, your team finds ample enough cover to assault the objective. Your Assault guy drops some ammo and you all run into the fray, ready to detonate the box. It's a scenario that sounds fantastic ... and it happens all the time in Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
