You can't buy this six-inch tall, posable Atlas battlemech from any toy or collectible maker, and it isn't a Comic-Con exclusive. It's exclusively from the 3D printer of a Mechwarrior fan. The Atlas has (by my count, anyway) 11 points of articulation, and creator Valcrow says that from the torso up, just two parts were glued together, meaning he built much of it to snap into and out of place. That's to give the thing interchangeable weapon mounts on the sides of the body. "The biggest challenge was keeping the integrity of the atlas design while making the joints operational in a physical model, coupled with the limitations of FDM printing," writes Valcrow. "Head printed at 75 micron layer as opposed to 150 for the rest. shines a bit differently.. kinda like hair," he writes. I have no idea what that means but it looks damn good. Many more images at the link. 6" Tall Posable Atlas [Mechwarrior Online] To contact the author of this post, write to owen@kotaku.com or find him on Twitter @owengood.

Four medium lasers, a Gauss rifle, a large laser, SRMs, and a top speed of 48.6 KPH make this one hell of a death machine.

Yesterday, the chug of a guitar echoed around RPS as a mech made a drop into enemy territory. Today, more mechs and from the same universe, but these ones are a great deal quieter because they exist in the frozen screenshots of Mechwarrior Tactics. Perhaps as you look at the hex-based battles you’ll be inclined to play raucous music from your personal collection. That is your choice and although I’d suggest something of a more baroque nature to accompany tactical cognition, do not feel compelled to follow my lead. Click to make ‘em mech-sized. Or at least a bit bigger.

Now that I’ve shoe-horned it into the headline, it’d be doubly embarassing if my mechognition skills were a bit off. I think you’ll find that the handsome chap below is an Atlas though, performing a hot drop in the first Mechwarrior Online video. It doesn’t actually show the game being played, that would be far too useful, so instead of discussing the finer points of the interface and damage modelling, we’ll have to spend our time dissecting the canonical correctitude of what we’re being shown. Ready?

After being teased over two years ago, the return of Mechwarrior is apparently around the calendar corner. PC Gamer reports it has the details on the reboot, which will be a PC exclusive title. It will allegedly update with more information in a few hours, with "one very big surprise," so we'll be sure to update then.

Blue has noticed that there have been some rumblings from Pirhana Games about their new Mechwarrior game. There’s also a bit of information on their site, including this: “Gamers will pilot a deadly BattleMech and use information warfare to dominate a dynamic-destructive urban battlefield. The game features include classic and new mechs from the BattleTech universe with persistent character development and plans for a single player campaign, as well as, co-op, and multiplayer gameplay.” You apparently play “a wayward nobleman” who ends up with a motive for revenge when his family are killed during a planetary invasion.

Worringly the site also runs with the headline “Not Your Father’s MechWarrior” which makes me sad because I am my own father. That said, the CG teaser (below) does look promising, and seems to get the plodding weapon-blastiness that is Mechwarrior.(more…)

So here's the thing -- we were all set to tell you about how MechWarrior 4 has been released as free for all to play, but apparently some people found out before we could tell you and now, well, now the servers are down. Bigtime. As in, it might be a few minutes before they're back up. According to several tipsters, the 1.7GB file became available for download last night, but as of right now, MekTek (the game's host) is still suffering an outage.

That said ... hey! MechWarrior 4 has been released to the general public for precisely zero of your hard-earned C-Bills! If you managed to snag the file last night, we're hearing reports that MekTek has recovered the game's multiplayer servers. We'll let you know when we hear that the servers are back up.

After it was first announced in July of 2009, the free release of MechWarrior 4 has finally been cleared by Microsoft. The announcement comes weeks after MekTek, the studio behind the free release, revealed that the project was being held up by Microsoft's legal department. The delay resulted in financial trouble for the studio, which was actually paying out-of-pocket to maintain its servers.

MekTek believes that the revelation of the legal hold up -- and the subsequent news coverage and forum traffic -- played a role in expediting the release. The company has also thanked its partners Smith & Tinker, Virtual World Entertainment and Catalyst Game Labs for "pressing Microsoft to allow for the release."

MekTek advises fans to "stay tuned" for the impending free launch of MechWarrior 4.

Way back in July 2009, Smith & Tinker announced that it was going to authorize MekTek to release MechWarrior 4 and all its expansions for free "soon" -- likely to drum up interest for the upcoming MechWarrior reboot. After nearly a year, the game remains unreleased. The reason for the delay, according to MekTek, lies with Microsoft. The group claims that the project is "held up at Microsoft" and it's currently "unknown" when the release will receive its "final go ahead."

The studio adds the unfortunate revelation that it's now in dire financial straights thanks to the delay. "Due to the demands placed upon us by industry lawyers to release the Mechwarrior 4 Free release we were forced to insure our Studio at a premium rate to meet the Microsoft standard," reads the announcement, adding that group's server fund has "run dry" and is currently being paid directly by staff. MekTek is asking for donations from players that download its MekPak 3.1 expansion. According to the announcement, MekTek would be able to keep the servers running for an entire year if all those who downloaded the expansion were to donate $5.
