Sometimes interviews go perfectly according to script and everything is just dandy. Also, frequently boring. In those instances, you nod dutifully after exhausting every possible line of questioning, turn off your recorder, and usually buy some form of burrito to soak up the tears. But other times things just sort of naturally veer into wacky territory. That’s not to say that CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson’s dreams of a virtual-reality-born utopian future aren’t admirable (personally, I’d love for them to come true), but these are some huge – almost preposterously so – ideas. Do you want to hear how EVE Online could, according to its creator, help end class disparities once and for all? Then you’ve come to the right place.

CCP might be best known for EVE Online, but they’ve had another project burbling away in their developmental cauldron since basically the dawn of time. World of Darkness, based on White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade setting, is technically existent, though CCP has become quite adept at keeping it shrouded in, er, darkness. But every once in a while some news slips out, and not all of it is good. For instance, the World of Darkness team recently laid off 15 members of its rather small (for an MMO) force. So then, what’s going on behind-the-scenes? Should we be worried? And how is the game evolving? I asked CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson, and here’s what he told me.

How does your favorite game or game series thank you, the player? In-game items? Bonus XP weekends? Raffle contests? How about a monument to your honor and glory in the heart of a country's capital city? CCP, developers of EVE Online, plan to erect a monument more than 16 feet tall in the city of Reykjavik, Iceland to thank players for their time and contributions to the long-running starship MMO. That's like bonus XP for life.

The monument will be erected and placed upon a half-meter tall pedestal which will list the main characters of all active EVE Online players. A press release announcing the planned monument states that the active player list will be captured on March 1, 2014, so if you want to stand up and be accounted for, now's the time to strap back into the captain's chair. CCP will also include the names of EVE players who have passed away.

Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CEO of CCP said in a statement that, "Honoring [the players] as part of a timeless monument shows how virtual lives and adventures have reached a new level of meaning and impact that weaves into and enhances those that happen in this world. We are humbled by all those that have joined us on the journey so far, and it's our hope that this physical piece will continue to gather energy and relevance into decades to come, becoming like EVE Online and outliving us all." Earlier this week, EVE Online’s largest ever ship battle took place between two of the game’s player-run factions. Around $300,000 worth of internet spaceships was destroyed. EVE Online will erect a memorial to the 21-hour, all-out space battle that spanned Monday and Tuesday, commemorating the loss of 75 Titans—the largest ship in the spacefaring MMO. The total damage done may translate to more than $300,000 in real money, but it is the loss of the Titans that defines the Battle of B-R5RB.Read more...

A skirmish over an unpaid bill in CCP Games' spacefaring MMORPG EVE Online escalated to a battle of epic proportions on Monday, costing its participants an estimated $500,000 in real-world cash so far, according to a USA Today report.

When a missed payment left a contested area of space unprotected, the biggest battle in EVE Online's ten-year history erupted, involving more than 4,000 players. The fight saw the destruction of over 100 prized Titan vessels, which take months of gameplay to build and are worth around $3,000 each.

A series of animated .gifs capture the carnage as it unfolded, documenting hundreds of destroyed ships and untold losses for players caught up in the action. [Photo credit: rooksandkings]

The Battle of the Bill, they’re calling it. OK, actually it’s just me calling it that. But still, history will forever remember that EVE Online‘s most colossal (not to mention colossally expensive) virtual star war began because one alliance missed a bill payment – at least until another biggest battle in EVE history happens in, like, three months. But still, this one kicked off because the N3 coalition failed to make a hugely important system, allowing other alliances to attempt complete takeover. Madness ensued. Nearly $300,000 worth of madness.

Does this count as government aid? Because EVE Online has an actual ruling body that meets in Iceland IRL. The game's publisher is asking players to donate Pilot License Extensions (PLEX) to fund relief to the Phillippines as it recovers from Typhoon Haiyan, and will match $15 to each donation, up to $75,000.Read more...

CCP, developer of EVE Online, DUST 514 and the upcoming World of Darkness MMO, is currently holding a donation drive to help aid those affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines earlier this month. Each donation of an EVE player's Pilot License Extension (PLEX) during this "PLEX for GOOD" campaign funnels $15 toward the Icelandic Red Cross, and CCP is prepared to give up to a maximum of $75,000. The drive will last until December 7.

For those who haven't yet launched into the vast and open world of EVE Online, PLEX is not only an in-game item, but also how players subscribe to the game. By either purchasing PLEX outright with real-world currency or earning it in-game, players are allowed to fly their ships for 30 more days. In other words, players aren't just donating in-game items, they're donating the item that allows them to play. To thank them for their contribution, CCP is rewarding donors with a special in-game shirt.

Those who want to donate can read more about the process over on the EVE community blog.

I love the idea of being in space, but I’ve recently come to realize that the reality of space is entirely horrifying. No air, no gravity, no control. Humans weren’t meant to exist outside our warm, loamy cradle of a planet, and mortality’s icy hand becomes much harder to ignore when it’s inches away from your face. That’s the power of EVE Valkyrie, the suck-the-air-out-of-your-lungs appeal that virtual reality – truly well-done virtual reality – brings. It’s one thing to watch your EVE ship float around from some detached camera angle like a roving intergalactic deity, but it’s quite something else to see fog overwhelming your cockpit’s glass, creeping like fear. Can that added element of immersion sustain a full game, though? And are Valkyrie’s other elements up to snuff? Here’s what I found during an all-too-brief play session.

I recently had the opportunity to go hands-on with CCP’s Oculus-Rift-powered wonder EVE Valkyrie, and – shock of all shocks – it was really wonderful. More on that soon. First, though, some minor yet potentially meaningful strangeness. After clambering out of my head-mounted cockpit (that sounds incredibly dirty), I quizzed CCP all about its plans for EVE, Dust, Valkyrie, and how they’ll intertwine. I’ll have the full interview up asap, but one bit stood out: chief marketing officer David Reid was quite adamant that EVE Valkyrie won’t necessarily be launching on PC or Oculus Rift. I’m not really sure what to make of it, to be honest, but here’s what he said.

I’ve never heard of a “comic book” before, but I can only assume they’re a degenerate art form produced by adolescents. Which makes them pretty exciting, actually. Unfortunately the people who normally come up with the stories for comic books are too rubbish, and so now Dark Horse Comics are making them about things that happened inside a videogame. EVE: True Stories is a new four-part series based on the player-created events inside EVE Online, the vast space-faring MMO about transferring small icons into floating space boxes, but also occasionally piracy and betrayal and enormous space wars.(more…)

The only time I managed to get feel in control in Eve Online was when a friend wise in the ways of 0-0 decided to teach me. He told me what to buy, what to fit to my ship, and what skills to train. It perhaps led me down a path that he’d already worn in the space lanes, and I spent most of my time ferrying goods and waiting for the political intrigue and espionage to begin. Who knows? Maybe I was a puppet in his game of political intrigue and espionage, but it sure felt like I was a courier of insignificant goods. But without him helping me along, I doubt I’d have even gone that far. It’s a relationship that underpins Eve, and now CCP are going to attempt to do something similar. Their New Player Training Sessions will be CCP led in-game seminars, teaching Pod people how to fight more and fumble less.(more…)

The universe – languid, lazy thing that it is – will never stop expanding, and EVE Online looks to keep in line with its most direct inspiration. So now it’s time for the much-whispered-about winter expansion, which finally has a name: Rubicon. It’ll be out quite soon, and it promises a new narrative about players/capsuleers’ rise to power, new guerrilla-style warfare options, mobile player-owned structures, new ships, and of course, plenty of re-balancing. Details nestled within the great, unknowable nebulae past the break.

Riots have a way of enveloping, possessing, and changing even the most unlikely of passersby, and so too does Riot Games. The League of Legends developer has expanded its more-than-a-thousand-deep talent pool to the point of near-ludicrousness, hungrily slurping up the best and brightest from games and other media alike. The latest? Why, none other than EVE Online lead designer Kristoffer Touborg, that most Borgiest of Tous. Strikes me as a bit of an odd fit, but anyone who can build a universe for EVE’s endlessly intrigue-starved legions must know a thing or two about making good online games. So off he goes.
