Remember the quote from the guy at the game company who said that the sequel to a commercially successful title would be “smaller, probably not as appealing to a mass audience and much more low-key”? Of course not – sequels are ‘bigger’ and ‘better’. Ask anyone working on a AAA franchise what their role is and whatever the specifics, you’ll quickly find that they work in either the ‘enlargement’ or ‘improvement’ department. This is as true at Rockstar as anywhere else, so it’s no surprise that Game Informer’s reveal of GTA V details harps on about size. The issue itself is even Game Informer’s most massive sequel – “our biggest cover story yet!” – but what does it actually tell us?

#grandtheftauto The news that GTA V will be bigger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas, and GTA IV combined is impressive. It makes on think back to the vast expanses of GTA III, the game that pioneered huge open-world experiences. People spent weeks on that game, trying to complete ever last side quest and find every package. In the vaults of the Speed Demos Archive, John "Silmaranza" Breedon shows off how he managed to do that feat in 6.5 hours. The whole thing took about a year to do but is impressive nonetheless. Who knows how long GTA V will be? It'll be a challenge for the speedrunners of the world, that's for sure. More »

#grandtheftauto Grand Theft Auto has always been a singularly musical series. From classic rock blaring over a helicopter sunset to cool jazz simmering on a rainy city night, GTA's many in-game radio stations, coupled with Rockstar's seemingly infallible song-selection, makes each game's soundtrack as good as the last one. We don’t know much about Grand Theft Auto V, but that’s about to change. Rockstar Games’ promotional campaign for the spring 2013 release kicks off with the latest Game Informer cover.

The big news: GTA V will feature three main characters, a first for the series. Color me disappointed Rockstar Games continues to focus exclusively on male protagonists, but given how much better the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV was (focused, efficient storytelling), I'm already way more interested than I was a few minutes ago.

Grand Theft Auto 5 features the three main protagonists pictured above, Game Informer reports. These three serious dudes should have plenty of room to roam around in, since Los Santos, the sunny Los Angeles of GTA's universe, is the largest open world Rockstar has ever created.

UK magazine ShortList reports Grand Theft Auto 5 is tackling the same brutal subject matter of infamous mobster lore, and one of these protagonists is an East Coast gangster who moves to Los Santos for a fresh start, CVG says.

The protagonist is committed to go clean, "but, as in The Godfather 3 - just as he thought he was out, they pulled him back in," CVG quotes ShortList.

After tense months spent waiting to hear the release date of Grand Theft Auto 5, it's finally set to launch in spring 2013. Check out the full Game Informer cover featuring Grand Theft Auto 5 below.

Now that Grand Theft Auto 5 has an official launch window of "Spring 2013," several retailers have opened up pre-orders for Rockstar's latest. You can reserve your copy through Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop and more right now.

The full list is available over at Rockstar, though we'd warn exercising caution at this point. Sure, you may want to pounce because you believe Grand Theft Auto 5 will sell like crazy - it probably will - but keep in mind that no retailer-specific pre-order incentives have been revealed yet. We can't imagine playing Grand Theft Auto 5 without the right bonus outfit and car like some kind of cretin.

Photos circulating online reveal that at least four different keychains are available at retailers like GameStop, Target and Future Shop, each showing off a location from Grand Theft Auto V.

Retailers running preorders for Grand Theft Auto 5 (which is now officially coming out in spring 2013) were supposed to wait until November 5 to give away any promotional items, but pictures of what looks like a little keychain image viewer have leaked out, both revealing that as a pre-order bonus for the game, and showing off some of the locations to be included in Rockstar's latest paean to the West Coast.

Looking through the viewfinder on the tiny accessory shows off not only the Zancudo River, but also the Vinewood Hills (a play on Hollywood), the Del Perro Pier (likely Santa Monica's landmark playground), the Vespucci Canals (with a view of downtown), and Grapeseed (a winery area that's likely a tip to California's Napa Valley).

Sounds like fun. Fans have also spotted a poster promoting the game (which you can see after the break below) featuring a woman wearing a Love Fist t-shirt, and a few of the keychain viewers reference an air travel company called "FlyUS", so it appears that GTA's usual parodic shenanigans are in order. We'll likely hear even more about this one in the next month or so, as Rockstar's promotional machine for the game finally starts kicking into gear.

Take-Two had a great second quarter (ending September 30), with revenues of $273.1 million, a 155 percent increase from the $107 million in the previous Q2. At the end of the day, however, the company did have a net loss of $12.5 million, which is still significantly better than the $123.3 loss from the same period last year.

The big gun during the quarter was Borderlands 2, which shipped over 5 million units, along with catalog sales of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Red Dead Redemption. Revenue from digital distribution was up 108 percent year-over-year, with "strong digital sales" (i.e. non-retail) mentioned for new releases Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

With Grand Theft Auto 5 officially given a spring 2013 release window, it should be noted that Take-Two reduced its "financial outlook" for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, removing $600 million in forecasted sales. That extra $600 million raised our eyebrows when it appeared in the company's projections at the beginning of the fiscal year, as the math would only really work out if Take-Two was planning GTA 5 before April 1, 2013. That is, obviously, no longer the case and the company has reduced its outlook to "reflect its revised assumed release schedule."

Even as this generation begins to draw to a close, there are several major games on the horizon, including Grand Theft Auto V. Rockstar Games has confirmed its sequel will release next spring.

Well, “expected to launch” in spring 2013. That’s the language Rockstar Games used on its website, and as a company known for delaying games until they’re good and ready, it’s not surprising.

More information on GTAV should be available soon, as it’s supposed to be on the next cover on Game Informer, and one would expect that to begin the game’s official marketing campaign.

Today's announcement only mentions Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and nothing about a PC release. Grand Theft Auto IV was released for the PC, though, as was Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire. People are still peeved about Red Dead Redemption not getting a PC release.

The official word comes hours after UK retailer GAME tweeted out official promotional material with the date stamped on it. Take-Two Interactive was also supposed to have its investor call today, but canceled due to the aftermath of hurricane Sandy.

#grandtheftauto The art style that Rockstar Games uses to promote its Grand Theft Auto games has been almost as important as the gameplay in the open-world series. Over the years, the publisher has doled out hints as to the sex, drugs and hi-jinx players would get into via posters and other graphic design images, long before any glimpses of gameplay were offered. Take-Two Interactive didn't meet its revenue and profit goals for fiscal year 2012 because it delayed some games, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted during a stockholder meeting today.

"This was primarily due to our decision to postpone the release of several titles in order to allow for additional development time," Zelnick said, without naming any specific games. "Although our commitment to quality may occasionally affect near-term results, we believe it's the right approach for maximizing revenue and profits over the long-term."

Zelnick later mentioned BioShock Infinite, which was delayed to February 26, and Grand Theft Auto 5, which never had an official release date but was widely expected to launch some time in 2012. After all, Take-Two has a probable $600 million deficit in its 2013 outlook, expecting to earn $1.7 billion - $1.8 billion by March.

"Grand Theft Auto 5 is in full development and making substantial progress," Zelnick added.

So, the Grand Theft Auto 5 news we awaited after seeing new screens earlier this week has turned out to be ... more new screens. Which is, of course, fine. Especially when those new screens reveal activities like skydiving, tennis, and dirt bike racing.

At least, we think that's what's going on in these "Leisure" screens. It's GTA, so it could very well be that all these screens actually depict horrific crimes being perpetrated in these venues, and using these vehicles.

In the wake of last week's huge European game expo, Rockstar Games released several new images for Grand Theft Auto 5 this morning, effectively hijacking our interest. The images feature three vehicles from the upcoming open-world adventure: a road bicycle, a return of GTA classic sports car "Cheeta," and a damn fighter jet (seen above). Also of note, the Cheeta's license plate has a "San Andreas" wrapper - not a huge surprise given what we know about GTA5 5's setting, but neat nonetheless.

Not enough to sate your thirst for more GTA 5 news? Rockstar says there'll be more revealed "this week," so there!
