Major League Gaming announced late last night that the first and second place winners of the Summer Championship League of Legends Event have been disqualified for conspiring to not play a match to win.

"We have determined that there was collusion between the two final teams, Curse NA and Team Dignitas," MLG wrote in a statement. "This is in clear violation of both the letter and spirit of MLG's Official Pro Circuit Conduct Rules: 'competitors may not intentionally Forfeit a Game or conspire to manipulate Rankings or Brackets.' As such, both teams have been disqualified, and no placements or prize money will be awarded."

Curse NA put out a video stating the issue surrounds agreeing with Team Dignitas that the first round of the match should be an "ARAM," but that no other agreements were made. The acronym stands for "all random all middle," meaning both teams picked champions at random and played only the middle lane. It's a player-created match style, like if two major sports teams agreed to play baseball with one base or basketball using half the court.

Senior Vice President Lee Chen of Major League Gaming denies the defense, writing on Twitter: "To be clear here folks, the collusion had nothing to do with the ARAM. CRS/DIG conspired to split prize money."

The third and fourth place teams will receive the prize money for the event. MLG states although there is contention over the exact nature of the violation, that "both teams, as well as MLG and [League of Legends developer] Riot" agree that not playing a tournament match to win warrants disqualification.

As any of its millions of players will tell you, League of Legends is a fun game. Those same players will likely also tell you that the game has a tremendously steep learning curve. With more than 100 playable champions, a dizzying array of items and demanding gameplay, getting to know the ropes is no easy feat. Speaking with senior producer Travis George at Gamescom, I asked how developer Riot Games was going to address the issue of easing players into League of Legends.

The game already features bot training and a spectator mode, but what other systems could Riot implement to acclimate new players? His answer surprised me: The problem isn't the learning curve, it's the community.

#dota There's no question that Defense Of The Ancients (Dota) is big. It's a big deal. It's also an immensely complicated game that has evolved over years of intense play, modding, and sprawling evolution. It's not very much like any other game out there. And for that reason, it could be argued that Dota 2 lays bare just how unimaginative most video games these days are. More »

Riot Games has secured the LeagueOfLegends.co (no "m") website after filing a complaint earlier this year, saying that a domain squatter had grabbed the name and redirected it to a porn site. The case on the World Intellectual Property Organization website has been terminated, and the domain is currently listed as owned by Riot Games, the company behind the popular MOBA game of the same name.

Those looking for illicit material on a League of Legends-related website will presumably have to go elsewhere. Like, for example, LeagueOfLegendsPorn.com, which is another (currently empty) domain that Riot has another standing complaint against. Because Riot does own the "League of Legends" trademark, that case will probably see a similar result soon. And now that Riot has secured the URLs we know about, are they going to tell us what Supremacy is anytime soon?

#leagueoflegends Apparently when GoDaddy was hawking .co domain registrations with Danica Patrick and bodypaint, some Colombian outfit snapped up LeagueOfLegends.co and redirected gamers who forgot to type that last "M" to a porn site. Considering the overall popularity of LeagueOfLegends.com, this was a shrewd bit of cybersquatting. More »

With Season 2 of League of Legends still drawing to a close, developer Riot Games has announced details for the game's third season, which will include a brand new league known as the Championship Series. The series will see the best teams from North America, Europe and Asia face off to compete for millions of dollars in "salaries, prize pools and other compensation." That first one, lest you missed it: salaries.

Just how many millions are up for grabs hasn't been announced, though the Season 2 prize pool stands at $5 million, with the world championship and regional final pool totaling $3 million alone.

From Forbes and Xfire come some truly jaw-dropping stats about how much time people currently spend on games. Over the last year, Minecraft clocked up 371,635,651 hours, while World of Warcraft scored a life-sapping 622,378,909. Both however pale to the game at the top of the chart, League of Legends. 1,292,502,456 hours, in just the US and EU. Coincidentally, that’s also the amount of time you have to play before people stop calling you a noob.

It hasn’t been a good week for League of Legends. Between all the ups and downs and incredibly long (multiple hour) queues, Riot’s flagship has been looking less like a MOBA and more like a theme park rollercoaster. North American servers, especially, have been out-and-out unavailable for hours at a time, and players, naturally, have felt quite a tingling in their pitchfork-and-torch regions. To its credit, however, Riot’s gone on record explaining the situation in full.

League of Legends accounts in certain European regions have been hacked, Riot Games notified players yesterday. The EU West and EU Nordic and East databases were breached, with hackers accessing email addresses, encrypted account passwords, summoner names, dates of birth and, for a small number of players, full names and security questions and responses.

"Absolutely no" billing or payment information was breached, Riot said. Riot stores passwords in encrypted form, but more than half of the passwords at risk were simple enough to fall victim to simple cracking.

Riot has fixed the security exploit and is emailing all players in the affected region, and will be updating this post. Security experts and the appropriate authorities have been notified, Riot said.

For now, League of Legends players would do well to change their passwords, and make sure they're something more complex than "password."

"Brandon and I want to sincerely and personally apologize to you for this situation," Riot's Marc Merrill concludes his post. "We take your privacy and security seriously, and we're working diligently to improve it for the better."

#leagueoflegends A small percentage of League of Legends players have been using an exploit that lets them cast powerful spells one right after another. The exploit let players add more points to the game's Mastery system that would normally be allowed. But LoL developer Riot Games says such tactics are "bull****" and made moves to fix the loophole that made the cheat possible as soon as they heard about it. More »

League of Legends' second season of competitive play will conclude October 13 in Los Angeles, with $3,000,000 on the line for winners from across the world and regional championships.

Teams have been competing since last November to qualify for the regional championships, which will be held in locales across the globe starting in July. Places where you'll likely be around to check out the regionals is August 16 at Gamescom or August 31 at PAX Prime. There are also regional competitions taking place in China, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore. The twelve teams from the regionals will then compete at the University of South California's arena in October.

Last year's championship had nearly 1.7 million viewers, with the final match between pan-European team 'FNaticMSI' and France's 'Against All Authority' topping 210,000 unique viewers unto itself.

#leagueoflegends We all have our gaming blindspots. Genres or series we don't know as much, or play as much, as we would maybe like to. I play more than enough games as it is, I'd say, if I ever needed an excuse. More »
