Unlike certain Capcom Mobile games that make us feel all weird inside, Curve Studios' Explodemon for PS3 reminds us of Twisted Pixel's Splosion Man franchise ... but in a good way (it helps that it's not a direct ripoff).

Hi All – it’s comics update time! Let’s look at some highlights for this week.

We’re building up some momentum in 2011 with our second PlayStation Plus publish of the year, offering three featured games along with a handful of discounts on PlayStation Network exclusive titles – all coming to you on February 1. Mix in an automatic download that gives early access to an upcoming PSN-exclusive, and this update is sure to have something for everyone.

Kicking off this PlayStation Plus update with an auto download of a demo of Tales from Space: About a Blob, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be getting the first look. This upcoming PlayStation Network game developed by DrinkBox Studios follows a race of alien Blobs that encounter a foreign plant that is looking to devour everything. As a reminder, PlayStation Plus subscribers can turn on the Automatic Download feature under “System Settings” on the XMB. This feature will update your PS3 with firmware updates, patches to recently played games and other select videos or game demos.

In addition to the early access to Tales from Space: About a Blob, we are also discounting several PlayStation Network exclusives. PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive 50% discounts off both versions of Fat Princess, the comical, multiplayer brawler. After storming the castle with your friends, be sure to download Kung-Fu LIVE for 20% off. You too can join Jeff and Rey as you show off your Kung Fu skills with this new PlayStation Eye game. Despite some recent hiccups in the multiplayer service for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, we have quite a serious crush on the game (as evidenced by our nod to it in 2010's GOTY list). And that's why we're so glad to hear of today's impending "Animus Project Update 2.0," said to add a new team-based multiplayer mode ("Chest Capture") and the Pienza map.

It appears that the free download isn't available just yet, but should be popping up on XBLM and PSN in the coming hours. In the meantime, we've got a trailer of the update's content in action. Join us just after the break ... but watch your back!

The PS3 jailbreak threatens to wreck havoc on the PlayStation ecosystem in ways beyond just piracy. The integrity of the PS3 trophy system hangs in the balance, as hackers have supposedly created an app that unlocks trophies in games automatically. CVG reports that the tool has been used to unlock trophies in BUZZ! and the notoriously challenging PAIN. Oddly, the tool apparently doesn't work in games like Resident Evil 5 and Batman: Arkham Asylum, meaning it isn't quite foolproof yet.

Obviously, a compromise like this undermines the entire point of the trophy system. Sony's Eric Lempel explained to us that the PSP couldn't support trophies due to the unsecured nature of that platform. "If people can artificially inflate their rankings ... it kills the whole [Trophy] system," he explained. Unfortunately, it appears Sony now faces the same issue on the PS3.

"We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it," a SCEE representative commented. "We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details."

Qore kicks off the New Year with a look back at 2010 in our ‘Year in Review’ featuring the best moments from the team’s travels covering the biggest games of the year.

As for 2011, LittleBigPlanet 2’s level design tools are exposed when Veronica Belmont scrolls along with one of the LBP community’s most prolific level designers, Sean Crowley. Follow along as Sean reveals his tips for creating in the new game and unveils one of his latest creations.

In the world of MMOs, DC Universe Online is a title the Qore team’s been keeping an eye on since first covering the initial development in 2008. Sony Online Entertainment Game Director, Chris Cao takes us through this huge world where you design your own super hero– then decide to fight along side DC legends like Superman or take ‘em on as the bad guys.

Also, Commander Shepard is making his debut on the PS3 system in Mass Effect 2, the epic action role-playing game from Bioware. Get up to speed on this fantastic shooter/RPG hybrid and don’t miss the gallery of concept art and screenshots to get you prepared for the upcoming release.

During the company's CES 2011 press conference this evening, Sony Corp. chairman/president/CEO and honest-to-goodness knight Sir Howard Stringer reported that, to date, there have been 60 million PlayStation Network accounts created. The news was dropped as Stringer spoke of the growing market for connected devices and Sony's place in it.

At last year's CES, it was Sony Computer Entertainment chief Kaz Hirai who revealed that, at the time, 38 million PSN accounts had been activated. This year's numbers stand in contrast to the latest user base figures for Microsoft's Xbox Live service, which as of this past November sat at 25 million users, half of which were paid subscribers.

Of course, Sony's figure includes PSP users and PSN accounts created via the PlayStation website. As with delivery of these stats in the past, there's no saying whether or not Sony will go into more detail down the line about where most of the users came from and what they're doing.

It was an exciting second season of “The Tester” and after the intense challenges, rivalries, and competitions, one victorious winner will soon be working for Sony Computer Entertainment America.

Please join me in congratulating Matthew Brown (aka Gaymer) on his victory! Throughout the series, Matthew demonstrated consistent performance and leadership, beating out the 11 other dedicated gamers who were all fighting for this unique opportunity to join the PlayStation family. His quick thinking and gaming skills in the season finale helped bring home the winning prize: a job at SCEA’s San Diego Studios as a Quality Assurance Tester, a $5,000 signing bonus, a limited edition ‘The Tester’ PlayStation 3 signed by all guest panelists, and a brand new 46” Sony Bravia 3D HDTV.

Brent Gocke caught up with Matthew after the conclusion of season to ask him about the experience, what the show was like, and what he’s most looking forward to on his first day of work. Check out the interview!

Matt will be following in the footsteps of several noteworthy players in the video game industry when he begins his career as a QA Tester. There are countless opportunities. We talked with a few folks that started in QA testing and found out where they are now.

“The gaming industry is a very strange beast. Most every position requires at least X amount of years experience within the industry. When it comes down to it, being a Tester in QA fulfills these qualifications and can be a very rewarding opportunity. My favorite aspect of the job was getting my hands on games more than 6 months before they are released. So, to anyone looking to break into the gaming industry that doesn’t know where to start, QA is a great option!”

David Jaffe

“Testing games was a stepping stone for me because it gave me access to the people who could allow me to design my own games, namely Sony game producers and executives. Once I was in, I used my creativity and my ambition to pitch ideas, design maps and suggest new games. Eventually, that caught the eye of a few producers within the company who promoted me out of test to be their assistant. From there, it was more of the same: hard work, not keeping quiet and working on designs for the company with no guarantee they would get made or even read. All of that eventually put me in enough ‘right place, right time’ moments that I was able to get my first game to design. I worked hard and long and brought all my abilities to the table and that, along with working with an amazing team, gave me a hit. After enough hits and enough good relationships, Sony rolled the financial dice on Eat Sleep Play and I am now the proud owner the company!”

“I was lucky enough to start my video gaming career by getting into QA. As a tester, I was able to leverage communication skills, not only through bug writing and email, but also through developing relationships with the development staff. Attention to detail and organization skills also proved to be indispensible once I moved from QA to production. I truly feel that my experience in QA has made me a better producer and a better game developer, and I wouldn’t trade that time for anything in the world.”

“When other kids aspired to be astronauts or ninjas, I often dreamt of working in the video game industry since my early childhood. I got my first taste of the industry when I was 12 and became an unofficial tester for Tecmo providing feedback and reporting bugs for flagship titles such as, Tecmo Bowl and Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2. It was at this point that I realized that spending five hours a day playing videogames while my parents yelled at me to do my homework could actually lead to career opportunities.”

Sam Thompson

“When I started testing for SCEA back in 1997, I was honestly shocked that Sony was going to pay me to break their games, and I really didn’t know what to expect. What I quickly realized was that getting into QA didn’t always require a College degree in computer engineering; you simply had to have an aptitude for gaming, be an effective communicator and thrive in a team oriented environment. Through it all, I still look back on those days with a sense of pride and accomplishment and to this day I still enjoy improving consumer experiences. As a Producer, in addition to managing a wide variety of aspects relative to the development process, we spend a lot of time sorting through player metrics, game play feedback, and applying different usability strategies in order to provide our development teams with useful data that will help them refine and improve the overall game play experience within our products. I can’t begin to express how incredible my job is; not only do I get to work on some of the greatest first party franchises in the industry, but I also get to work with industry leading development teams like Naughty Dog, Insomniac Games, Sucker Punch Productions, Nihilistic, and Bend Studio. These experiences have been instrumental in defining my role in the industry and continue to shape the type of person I am today, and I couldn’t have accomplished any of this without the years I spent in First Party Quality Assurance.”

There you were just last week, frustrated at all your Xbox 360 pals getting together to play co-op antibody-battling twin-stick shooter MicroBot -- without you. If you're still looking to play MicroBot on your PlayStation 3, the game's heading to PlayStation Network tomorrow, January 4, for $10.

MicroBot has you piloting a tiny ship inside of a human body (read: Innerspace), destroying diseased enemies and working with a partner to complete objectives. We'd suggest meeting some new friends before jumping into the co-op, though. These fair-weather folks don't sound very nice and, frankly, you deserve better.
