We aren't exactly sure how Metromix got screens of what appears to be the recently outed Smurfs Dance Party game, but here it is (above and after the break). Contacted for comment, a Ubisoft rep told us the Smurf product announcement will come mid-May. The company isn't currently releasing assets for whatever its Smurf game(s) will be.

Metromix's product description notes the title is being developed by Land Ho! (We Cheer) and will have players following "Smurf'testants" as they (sigh) "shake their powder blue rumps to songs by the Jackson 5, Selena Gomez and Katy Perry."

The site lists a July 26 release date (same as GameFly). And yes, if the screens are accurate, it's definitely another spin-off of Ubisoft's super successful Just Dance franchise.

[Thanks, Elliott]

When you're finding video game related stories on New York Magazine's entertainment blog, you just know they're going to be a little bit insane. Such is the case today, when we happened to stumble upon news that game development house Gate Five is suing former Destiny's Child member and current solo diva Beyonce Knowles over a a licensed dance game deal gone awry.

According to the summons obtained by Vulture, Beyonce and her company, Beyonce Inc.--perfect, just perfect--had a contractual agreement to produce a game called StarPower: Beyonce, a motion sensing game for an undisclosed platform that would have featured a selection of Beyonce hits that all the single ladies up in their living rooms--not to mention the occasional unmarried baby--could dance along to.

And this is how a million Kinect owners would have ended up with severe groin tears. The complaint states that just prior to Christmas last year, Knowles abruptly put the kibosh on the whole deal, after a "extortionate demand for entirely new compensation terms she wanted." This sent the financier of the project running screaming away from the whole thing, thus leading to Beyonce pulling out entirely.

According to Gate Five, this effectively killed the studio, with 70 people suddenly finding themselves out of work as a result of Knowles' reneging on her contract. The studio is seeking $100 million in compensation for breach of contract.

Up to this point, no Beyonce tracks have appeared in other dance titles, including Just Dance and Dance Central, but given the success of those titles, as well as Ubisoft's Michael Jackson: The Experience game, one could safely surmise that Knowles may have simply decided to try and make a deal with a bigger studio for her own game, because in all fairness, we have no idea who Gate Five even is. Google searches for the studio's info only bring up links to other people writing this same story, websites for bars and art galleries, and the occasional reference to an airport.

Not that Gate Five's relative obscurity makes the situation any less shady and unconscionable. Gate Five claims that the nasty way in which this went down shocked even Knowles' manager father--who, incidentally, Beyonce fired last month. On the plus side, Beyonce has now completed another important trial in her goal toward achieving top tier diva status. Namely, the "screw over an entire company's worth of people purely on a ridiculous whim" challenge. Now all she has to do is have a drunken, shouty episode in an airport, marry six more people, and find the jade monkey before the next full moon, and she'll be able to rank up with the likes of Dianna Ross and Liza Minnelli. We should all be so lucky.

Guess what, film and music industries? You guys got taken to school in the UK's Top 40 entertainment product rankings, as compiled by trade organization Entertainment Retailers Association. According to the chart, the number one entertainment property in the UK was neither a blockbuster film like Avatar, nor a chart-topping album like Take That's Progress, but rather Call of Duty: Black Ops, which sold over 3.2 million units in the territory last year. Booyah.

Two other games, FIFA 11 and Just Dance, made it into the Top 10 -- however, only nine spots on the entire Top 40 chart were occupied by games. We're not sure what that says about the country's media consumption habits, but we are sure that Red Dead Redemption got beaten out by Now That's What I Call Music 77, and that fills our heart with a dull, constant ache.

The Just Dance franchise takes a graceful leap over the shark with Ubisoft's announcement of Just Dance Kids, the fourth game in the series since its debut last year (or third, if you don't think Dance on Broadway counts).

The new game replaces the original's glowing silhouettes with video footage of Real Kids, who are sometimes dressed like chefs for some reason, and who dance along to 40-plus choreographed dances. According to the press release, it'll include "popular hits like 'Holiday,' "Naturally,' and 'One Time,'" which, not coincidentally, are also performed by children. You'll be able to Just Buy the game in November. If you happen to be attending the BlogHer conference in New York this weekend, you'll be able to see it there.

How does Ubisoft follow up on its multi-million unit selling Just Dance? By making a dancing game about the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The E3 presentation featured a few dancers on stage moving in front of a Kinect camera. However, other than a short musical number and a logo, Ubisoft hasn't presented much else. But, that probably won't stop hardcore fans from pre-ordering the game now.

We first of a possible deal for a Michael Jackson game last year. The original concept promised "recent voice recordings by the singer." It's unclear if Ubisoft's game is the same project, but it will be available by year's end.

Given the crazy sales and, no doubt, small budget of Ubisoft's Just Dance, it seems obvious that the company would follow up with another Wii dancing game. However, the next game in Ubisoft's dance series isn't a simple Just Dance sequel (though we're sure that'll happen too) -- rather than licensing a few pop hits and a few really embarrassing dance songs from the early '90s, the next game is about ... showtunes.

Dance on Broadway features a selection of 20 songs from Broadway musicals, including "All That Jazz,""Fame" and "Time Warp" (it's just a jump to the left!) The full track list is available after the break.

Ubisoft has announced a June 24 release date for EMEA territories, but none yet for North America. The ESRB rating on the box art would suggest that a North American debut isn't far off.

Ubisoft has just announced that it's about to start combing the globe, looking for the hottest dancers and choreographers that it can include in the follow-up to surprise smash hit Just Dance. As detailed by the press release, the auditions will begin in France before moving to London and, eventually, the US. The game's Facebook page has all the details.

Before you get too excited, know that the official Joystiq dance team, Jamaretto, will be participating and -- against contest and federal regulations -- we'll be breaking out all our signature moves like the Grand Crunk Railroad, the Gogurt, the Sprained Cankle and the Spin Around Really Fast. So ... yeah. Bring it.

Ubisoft announced last month that its Wii public humiliation simulator Just Dance had sold two million copies worldwide. Now, based on data from the March NPD report, analyst Ben Schachter estimates that one million copies have been sold in the US alone between the game's November release and the end of March. That's ... a lot of people loading up a cover version of "Womanizer" on their TVs.

236,000 of those copies of Dance were purchased just last month in the US. In contrast, Ubisoft's new Wii release, Red Steel 2, moved 50,000 copies (though it was released on March 23, in all fairness). We look forward to the inevitable knockoffs from other publishers. Anyone for a round of Strictly Toe Tappin'? No? How about We Wiggle Rhythmically? Or Dance Dance Revol -- oh ... right.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: we just don't get it. Somehow, Ubisoft's Just Dance has managed to become a full-fledged phenomenon -- we think two million worldwide sales means it's appropriate to call it that, right? Not only has Ubisoft received the honor that is boatloads of cash, but also the honor of having "the fastest-selling new intellectual property from a third-party publisher on Wii."

Perhaps the appropriate course of action isn't to try and dissect this, but to just close our eyes and go with it. Some of the songs aren't that bad, right? Or should we avoid sipping the Kool-Aid and quietly move to the side?

In true revolutionary fashion, Just Cause 2 took the top spot on the UK all-formats sales chart last week. The sandbox title that's more fun when you ignore your objectives beat out Pokémon SoulSilver and HeartGold, which fought to the second and fourth spots, respectively.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
kept on the pressure in third, while the unstoppable Just Dance took fifth. Kratos fell down the charts, like he tumbled out of the good graces of Mt. Olympus, as God of War III went from first to seventh. Check out the complete UK top 10 sales list after the break.

In its first week at retail, Final Fantasy XIII charged up the UK sales charts like a Lightning bolt, becoming the "fastest selling" game of the year -- a record set by Bad Company 2 just last week. According to Chart-Track, the console sales split for the latest edition in Square Enix's flagship series was fairly even, with a 54 to 46 percent split on PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2's sales slipped 38 percent last week, bringing EA DICE's fantastic multiplayer title (wait, there's a single player, too?) down to second place. And, in third, there it is ... Just Dance. The game is unstoppable and has the stamina of a six-year-old hyped up on Pixy Stix. Like we noted last week, it just keeps going and going. We're just waiting to see when this epic sugar rush wears off.

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg is thrilled with February's NPD numbers, and for good reason. The Xbox 360 took the top spot in home console sales last month, despite not being a Wii. According to the NPD, it's the first time this has happened since the Halo 3 launch in 2007.

BioShock 2 seems to have had something to do with the boost, with the Xbox 360 version topping the software charts (and the PS3 version absent from the top ten). Other notable software milestones: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now the third best-selling game of all time, and Just Dance seems to have made a better pact with Satan than even Dante's Inferno did. See the software top ten after the break.

-360: 422K89K (27%)
-Wii: 398K68K (-15%)
-PS3: 360K83K (30%)
-PSP: 133K33K (33%)
-PS2: 102K60K (143%)

Okay, so it's a bit odd for Ubisoft to release a promo in January for a casual game that came out in November, starring a game industry figure who nobody in the target audience would be familiar with. But you know what else is a bit odd? Goichi Suda. In the video after the break, see the No More Heroes creator dance to MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" with Frag Doll "Psyche" in Ubisoft's Just Dance. It's likely to be the best video of a Japanese game designer dancing to a vintage hip-hop crossover hit you'll see today! But do let us know if you see a better one. [Via GSW]

You're going to have to take our word for it: Ubisoft's promo for Just Dance is easily the best video on the Nintendo Channel this week. Not only does it feature fat people falling down (who are always fodder for a shameless laugh), but it's got kids dancing and -- well, we don't want to ruin the rest for you. Just boot up your Wii and check it out. Seriously, do it. Head past the break for the full list of this week's content.

A portion of a Diehard GameFAN review… Just Dance is a horrible and shallow game that barely functions in the manner it is supposed to. The motion detection only works about a third of the time, and the instructions at the bottom for what move you are supposed to do next are often out of sync [...]
