Bethesda’s sent VG247 some stats relating to Brink prior to the game’s release one week from now. There’s no actual story here, but these numbers are too mad to not post. I guess you could argue that they’re a statement of precisely how much work goes into the modern videogame, but instead I’m going to simply raise both my arms into the air, start spacking them every which way like a bugged ragdoll animation and scream the following:

Brink has 102,247,681,536,000,000 possible characters variations. And that’s just the start.(more…)

Two more Brink videos have arisen from the crackling fronds of the interweb, detailing the classes and the HUD of this objective-based future-combat extravaganza. I’ve posted them below. Of the two, I would say the Classes one is worth watching, because it shows the most important mechanics, like how you can change classes in game (without dying) and how many of the objectives depends on the abilities of specific classes to be completed.

Anyway, that’s enough videos for now. Let’s get to the game, please. Thanks, Slow March Of Time!(more…)

Brink is finally, to coin a pun, on the brink of release. It's been a long road for Splash Damage, the development studio behind the game. For Olivier Leonardi, art director, the final few months have proven the trickiest. In this insightful interview, Leonardi discusses the process of creating the game's engine and art direction, the changes and hurdles he faced and the future of game graphics...

Still a little foggy about the various functions and goals of Brink's four player classes: the Soldier, Engineer, Medic and Operative? Though previous trailers have shown off their strengths and weaknesses, the latest trailer posted below gives the best explanation of each role's responsibilities.

Just two weeks to go. And that means a last gasp newsburst. We’ve got two more feature-elucidating videos below, which talk more about objectives and general gamefoolery. We’ve also got some clarification about dedicated servers. Anyone will be able to run a dedicated server, in the tradition of multiplayer FPS games since year dot: “The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server will be available for download via Steam prior to release. Once the server is available, you can simply browse to the Tools tab in your Steam client and grab it from there.”(more…)

Brink is many things; a shooter that blurs the boundaries between offline and online, a team-based game that threatens to bust apart the online console hegemony and an ambitious new IP from Splash Damage, a studio that made its name by repurposing other people's worlds in the likes of Wolfenstein: E...

The official Bethesda blog has posted an in-depth FAQ detailing exactly how the PC version of the upcoming Brink will make use of dedicated servers. Interested players will be able to download the free standalone server on Steam prior to the game's release (the game itself will also pre-load on Steam, according to Bethesda), then configure and run it right through the Steam client.

The setup will come with a few standard settings, but players will be able to customize their games as much as they'd like, setting up certain game modes, and customizing things like time limits, team sizes, passwords, and even the availability of certain buffs and friendly fire.

In short, Splash Damage is going old-school, and allowing players (as well as third-party server providers) to run whatever games they'd like on their own. That's much more generous than the less open options some high-profile multiplayer games have offered recently, so PC gamers should appreciate it.

Want to understand the fundamentals of how Brink’s objective-based game unfolds? Then you, sir, must have no fear, and must watch the video that lies beneath this introductory paragraph. I remain fascinated by this game, and can’t wait to see how it plays out. More interesting, perhaps, will be how the wider gaming community takes a slightly more complex multiplayer manshoot in this time of simplicity. Will the CoD-consuming masses be hungry for something with a little more substance? I’ll be interested to find out…(more…)

Brink is certainly one of the most striking looking shooters coming in 2011, but it's also going to sound amazing. The attention to detail on the aural side of things is staggering, and the lion's share of the credit goes to Splash Damage's Audio Director Chris Sweetman, who has gone to great length...

Brink, the frantic first-person shooter being brought to us by Splash Damage, has so much going on that at first I struggled to stay alive. During my hour-long playthrough I had a game developer over my shoulder helping me along the way and, by the end, I almost couldn't leave. For anyone who has played Team Fortress 2, Brink will feel very familiar.

This isn't surprising as Paul Wedgwood -- the CEO of Splash Damage and the game's director -- ran a Team Fortress clan for years. Other Splash Damage games such as Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars have followed the same class-based combat of Team Fortress. Brink is set up much in the same manner with four classes: a soldier, medic, engineer and operative. But Brink takes that formula a step further than TF2. And then 10 more.

I’ve had brief encounters with Splash Damage’s upcoming athletic shooter a few times now, and by this point I’m simply very keen to be able to sit down and play it at my leisure, building my character under my own steam, tackling its challenges with an RPS collective. Fortunately it’s now just a handful of weeks away, but even so there’s a few things left to chat about.

On my most recent entanglement with it – while I was also seeing the likes of Skyrim, Prey 2 and Rage – I had a chance to poke my big, stupid nose into two aspects I’d not seen before. Number one! The training missions, which double up as tutorial for the more esoteric aspects of the game and a gear-unlocking, high score-chasing sub-game in their own right! Number two! Being a fat guy.(more…)

What! Another game arrives early this year? Something funny is going on in game dev, but it’s true. Brink has apparently wrapped up production a week early, and consequently the game will now release on May 10th in North America and May 13th in Europe. Hmm. I suppose that makes our review schedule a bit easier, anyway…

You probably don't need us to tell you how rare it is for a video game release to be moved one week earlier than its original target, as opposed to, you know, twenty weeks later. Still, that's the case with Splash Damage's upcoming, multiplayer-centric shooter Brink -- its May 17 release date in North America and May 20 release date in Europe have been bumped up seven days, to May 10 and May 13, respectively.

Bethesda's Pete Hines explained, "Production wrapped on Brink earlier than we planned and we didn't see any reason to keep gamers from getting their hands on this highly anticipated game as soon as it was ready." Couldn't think of a reason, huh? How about this tattoo we got last weekend, which reads "On The Brink: 5/17/11," and then there's a picture of one of the dudes from Brink? That seems like a pretty damn good reason.

Oh, also, the new date deftly avoids competition with LA Noire -- a policy which we've elected to nickname "The Alan Wake Maneuver."
