I'm sure a lot of previews from Sony and Insomniac Games' latest Resistance 3 demo are going to talk about the new sniper rifle with its secondary fire mode that blows up enemies, and the Chimera's new cloaking ability. I'm going to talk about the protagonist Joseph Capelli and how much he loves his...

Just over a week after its Community Day reveal of new Resistance 3 gameplay, Insomniac was back at it again, this time showing off a new single-player level and a new multiplayer map in Hollywood. I also got a chance to actually play through the boat level we saw last time around, and had the distinct feeling that, more than anything else for this game, Insomniac is really playing with the pacing of a first-person shooter.

"Part of it is really trying to keep a better picture of the game as a whole," lead designer Drew Murray told me. "Much more in Resistance 3 than in past games, the design department has been more aware of what everyone else is doing," he said, which means more playtesting, and more communication between the teams of just what a level is supposed to feel like.

Murray said that early in development, each level in Resistance 3 was assigned a descriptive word, and the word for the start of the forest-based level, seen for the first time this week, was "hunted."

It's always healthy to take frequent breaks while playing through a first-person shooter to indulge in other, distinctly different kinds of shooting. If you purchase a specially-marked copy (or Full Deployment Edition) of SOCOM 4, then you should be all set -- Sony has announced that the game will include a voucher that will net you access to the public beta for Resistance 3.

The bundle's announcement on PlayStation Blog doesn't mention when said beta will kick off, but mentions that the voucher itself includes further details. We'll make sure we'll let you know when we get our hands on one of these golden tickets! At least, we assume that they're golden. If not ... well, then, what's the point?

Direct feed footage? That stuff's more boring than level six of The TurboTax Chronicles. We prefer off-screen multiplayer footage, filled to the brim with authentic crowd noises and the grunts of battle. Check out one such video for Insomniac's Resistance 3 right here.

Insomniac Games hosted its annual Community Day in Hollywood yesterday, and Resistance 3 was on display front and center, with a few discussions, a bevy of single-player and multiplayer demo stations, and one new gameplay reveal happening throughout the day. The demo available to the public has been seen in video form before, but the other gameplay demo on hand, shown right after the announcement of Move and 3D support, was all new.

Insomniac referred to it as "the boat level," because it's more or less an on-rails (on-river?) section played on a boat in the early part of the game. Protagonist Joe Capelli will be making his way from Haven, Oklahoma to New York City, and early on he jumps into a boat and starts touring up the muddy Mississippi towards St. Louis, through the flooded town of Wrightsburg, Missouri.

Insomniac has just announced at its Community Day event here in Los Angeles that when Resistance 3 finally arrives on September 6, it will bring with it support for 3D televisions, as well as compatibility with PlayStation Move and its Sharp Shooter attachment. The studio said during a public panel that it was encouraged by the Move functionality in Killzone 3 and plans to implement Resistance 3 in a similar way.

This is all good news, because, let us tell you: If you've never died in a Chimera attack, holding a model gun with a motion controller attached while wearing 3D glasses, well ... you haven't really lived.

Every time we announce that we’re inviting you fine fans to a PlayStation meetup, we hear back from you, loud and clear: “Why don’t you come to [some city that we aren’t in]?” Many such requests come to us from the great state of Texas, which is understandable, as we’ve never held an event there. That ends this weekend; we’re bringing the show to Austin.

4423067973_140cae0876.jpg

We’ve rented out a building on the corner of 2nd and Trinity, and we’re converting it to the PlayStation Lounge for SXSW Interactive. We’ll be bringing a lot of unreleased games to show to media during the day. But why let them have all the fun?

So, because sources tell me that things are, indeed, bigger in Texas – we’re holding not one, but two meetups this weekend!

So don’t make any plans for this Friday or Sunday evening, as we’re dying to give you a chance to play Ratchet & Clank All 4 One & Resistance 3, and SOCOM 4, respectively. We’ll also be bringing some great prizes to give out. Attendance is free, as are the refreshments, and you *don’t* need a SXSW badge to join us.

Here’s everything you need to know:

When:
Friday, March 11th 5-8pm (Ratchet & Clank All 4 One and Resistance 3)
Sunday, March 13th 4-7pm (SOCOM 4)

Where:
PlayStation Lounge
333 East 2nd St, Austin, TX 78701

Who:
You, as long as you’re 18 or older. Bring your ID!

RSVP here (must be 18+) for Ratchet & Clank All 4 One / Resistance 3 and RSVP here for SOCOM 4; you’re welcome to attend both.

We expect big things from our first Texas meetup, and we hope to see you there!
Holler below with any questions.

Alright, it's time to do a little pre-audition prep work: Let's see your best look of complete, abject despair. Good, good! Now, slump your shoulders and shuffle across the room, in a manner that just says, "Hey, my whole city just got destroyed by unswervingly violent alien aggressors." That's perfect! You might just have a chance to win Sony and Insomniac's "Get In The Game With Resistance 3" contest -- the winner of which will be cast as a survivor in the upcoming, Chimeric shooter.

All you have to do is send in an image of you in "the middle of a Resistance-style battle," or looking as survivor-y as possible, which we assume involves looking very, very dirty and sad. If your submission is picked, you'll get a private tour of Insomniac Games, where your face will be scanned and stuck onto an in-game character. Quick, show us "I just watched my grandparents get eaten!" Oh, man. That's remarkable. Seriously, you're a shoe-in.

We’ve got good news! We’re holding a competition where you can win a chance to appear as a survivor in our upcoming shooter, Resistance 3! One lucky winner will become a gaming legend, and will also receive an all-expense-paid trip to San Diego, California, along with a friend to have his or her face scanned and inserted into the next chapter of the epic Resistance series. The winner will also get the chance to meet the development team at Insomniac Games and get some hands-on time with the game before anyone else!

Enter the contest here and upload a photo of yourself in the middle of a Resistance-style battle (or looking like you have just survived one). The more props you use, the better! Once you have uploaded your photo, fill in the details required on the Resistance 3 competition page, tell us why you deserve to be one of our Resistance 3 survivors, and click Submit.

Ten selected finalists will have their entries showcased on the competition page before one lucky winner is hand-picked by Insomniac Games. But you’ll need to be quick – the competition closes this Friday, March 11th, 2011.

Terms and conditions apply – visit the contest page for more info. Good luck!

Join the resistance with a new hero, Joseph Capelli, on his journey as he battles to survive a desolate and harrowing planet Earth left ravaged by the Chimera invasion when Resistance 3 arrives later this year. To find out more and check out the trailers, go here.

Resistance 3 Multiplayer Screens

Insomniac Games has dropped the first details on the multiplayer component in Resistance 3, and those hoping the developer would reach MAG levels of simultaneous combatants after the 60-player Resistance 2 should probably be seated. Rather than escalate, the game's online offering will be more intimate, maxing out at 16 players -- eight on eight in any mode.

The dev says the move is about making the competitive experience more "personal" -- not for any technical reasons. After playing a few matches at tonight's preview event, we found the sole map being demoed, a prison in the Republic of Chad (all the multiplayer stages are set outside the US), nicely sized for the player count. Admittedly, the action was considerably tame compared to the massive battles of the previous game in the series.

Insomniac revealed -- and we tried -- some active and passive multiplayer abilities, the former represented by health/ammo drops and an electrified shield; the latter are always-active "stat buffs," such as making yourself more accurate when shooting while running. The final element we saw was the Berserk, which is rewarded for kill streaks and made our Chimeran character temporarily invisible.

Objective-based modes are to be revealed later, giving us hope that the developer has some fresh ideas lined up for them.

Greetings from the PlayStation.Blog.Lounge here at the fabulous W Hotel, across the street from the Game Developers Conference in downtown San Francisco. As this post goes live, we are revealing our all-new multiplayer for Resistance 3. We’ve said all along we wanted Resistance 3’s MP mode to bring the best of both Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2’s MP and co-op modes, and you’re about to see just how we’ve managed to do that.

5492354745_38145c4802.jpg

Resistance 3 will feature 16-player Human vs. Chimera deathmatch and objective-based modes set in locations across the globe. That may seem somewhat jarring after the 40 and 60-player mayhem in RFOM and R2. Rest assured though, our biggest motivation in determining our new player count was the fun times that we and the community had on maps like RFOM’s Busyard and Rooftops, as well as the Bayou House and San Francisco maps in Resistance 2.

Resistance 3 will offer a very deep and customizable progression system. Players can create their own progression paths through multiplayer, spending their hard-earned points to customize loadouts that fit their unique playstyle. We learned a lot from Resistance 2 co-op in terms of giving players the ability to create specific roles in a team and level up different abilities – which you will see with the various active tactical and support abilities, as well as the new personal and combat attributes.

5492354643_6f686570b6.jpg

5492949930_8169ceb837_m.jpg 5492354911_339482d915_m.jpg

For instance – each player can choose and level different support abilities – such as a Bubble Shield, Ammo Beacon (give ammo to teammates) or Radar Beacon (enhance your team’s radar). There are also tactical abilities you can use against your enemies, such as the Doppelganger (projects an image of you nearby to distract enemies) or Dash (an explosive burst of speed to evade enemy attacks).

Furthermore, each player can select and level a personal attribute and a combat attribute. These range from the ability to have leapers bust out from your corpse, to start with more weapons in your arsenal, to reloading or firing at a faster rate. You will be able to truly customize your character loadout to fit your own unique playstyle in Resistance 3.

We’ve been working on this new direction for close to two years now, polishing and refining our maps. We’re having a ton of fun playing Resistance 3 in the office every day. We will be bringing a multiplayer beta to PSN later this year, so stay tuned to our newsletters (Check today’s for the first news on Insomniac’s Community Day on March 29th!), Full Moon Show podcast, Twitter feed and Facebook page for all the latest updates!

We were unable to sleep while wondering about the origin story of Insomniac Games' name, but now we've got the answer from CEO and President Ted Price. Time to make that warm glass of milk and go to bed:

It was the spring of 1996 and we were getting ready to announce our first game (Disruptor) at E3. At the time, we were doing business as Xtreme Software. But, right before we began working on the press release for the game, we found out that an Arizona database company was also called Xtreme. I don't know how they found us, but I remember getting a letter from a lawyer explaining that we couldn't use their name. Suddenly we had a few days to find a new moniker.

We put up a white board and started writing down every name we could think of. We had about 100 that seemed viable. Some of the more popular ones were Ragnarok, Black Sun, Monument, Planet X and Firestorm. My personal favorite was one that [Chief Creative Officer] Brian Hastings had suggested - Ice-9. We liked it so much that we got permission from Kurt Vonnegut to use it. Ironically, it turned out that someone who HADN'T gotten permission from Kurt was already using it. And similarly all of our other favorites were in use.

With about 24 hours to go Insomniac Games popped up. It made sense given we weren't sleeping much anyway. And incredibly, no one else was using it. Since then our logo has changed a couple of times. But fortunately the name has stuck.

Insomniac Games' next two titles, Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, are scheduled for later this year on PlayStation 3.

Hello America!

Over the last couple of days we’ve been hosting a press event called PlayStation Experience here London, England. It’s basically an opportunity for journalists to try some of the first-party games that we are most excited about, and speak to their developers; we’ve been lucky enough to have Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch and many more join us for tea and gaming.

Some of the opportunities were world exclusives – this was the first time Resistance 3 had been played outside the Insomniac Games office. I was one of the lucky few and, afterwards, I grabbed some time on camera with Jon Paquette and Ryan Schneider of Insomniac Games and to talk about trains, fear and more:

I’ll be posting more interviews on here over the next week, by which time you probably won’t even notice my accent. And enjoy the Superbowl… All of the American devs that came over here were amazed when I told them we get to watch the whole thing without a single ad break.

Things are not looking up for humanity in the latest iteration of the Resistance series. Sure, you can see many of the game's weapons in action in this new trailer; but let's be realistic here: there's no way a small platoon of untrained soldiers will be able to fight that Chimeran Brawler and survive.
