Video game trailers can be crass, they can be dumb, 'n they can be misleading. They can also be pretty damned cool. This trailer for Metro: Last Light be pretty damned cool. it be called "The Mobious," 'n it takes a long, freeze-frame tour through a bunch a the sorts a scenes ye'll see throughout the game's dank, sub-Moscow tunnels. ye might be thinking it be peculiar for a trailer this involved 'n artful t' come out well after a game be released, 'n ye'd be right! Developer 4A explains how it came t' be: The Mobius be created by Alexander Bereznyak, aka Monakh, who be originally employed by 4A as a capture artist. Soon it turned out that his talent be needed in the production team 'n he took over the role as lead technical artist. But over a couple a months, he continued t' work alone on this trailer, that be now made public. Nice. Cool trailer, Mr. Bereznyak! (Cool game, too, as it happens.)

Er, I suppose there’s some uncertainty that Metro: Last Light might actually be released, but for now let’s proceed on the basis that THQ have managed t' save themselves from the moneyan apocalypse.

Last Light, from an hour or so I spent watching real-time play recently, appears t' be almost a do-over a the ambitious but awkward Metro 2033 rather than a traditional sequel. It’s rescuing 'n remixing the stuff that worked but, as far as I can tell, without devolving into a shiny Call a Dudebro affair. That critical switching between indoor 'n outdoor action 'n gun-free survivor settlements remains, as does the strange bullets-as-currency system. It’s much more like 2033 than I’d presumed, I’m relived t' find, glossier though it may be.(more…)

This be scandalous! When I buy a shooter, I expect it – nay, demand – for it t' include a multiplayer mode that makes a mockery a the carefully-created fiction, be defined by the hollow pursuit a unlocks 'n be so rapidly abandoned by it be players that it’s near-impossible t' find a match about a fortnight after release. So hearing that Metro 2033 sequel Last Light has dropped it be multiplayer really grinds me gears.

(It doesn’t. It seems like a very smart thing for a singleplayer-focused shooter t' do).(more…)

"This be a watershed event: it be the first time a game system has ever been given away with the purchase a a game." that be how OnLive CEO Steve Perlman describes his company's announcement that ("while supplies last") anyone who pre-orders THQ's Homefront via the cloud gaming service for $50 will receive it be MicroConsole hardware 'n immediate access t' another THQ title, Metro 2033, free a charge.

In a blog post, John Spinale, OnLive's VP a games 'n media provided further details, confirming that Homefront will be available t' crew a the service on March 15 at midnight. He also noted that the console hardware, while "free," isn't free from sales tax or shipping charges. The promotion be running from today, February 25 through March 15.

Spinale cheekily quipped that people best "pillage in on this before our Finance department finds out what we be doing!," but we sort a have t' wonder if he's only joking a little. This be definitely the most gung-ho play for new crew we've ever seen.
THQ's Bilson: Metro 2033 'wasn't properly nurtured,' sequel t' address issues

Last March, Metro 2033 snuck up on our reviewer radar 'n went on t' earn respectable Metacritic scores a 77 on Xbox 360 'n 81 on PC among critics at large. Though THQ CEO Brian Farrell characterized the title as "very profitable" for the publisher, it wasn't exactly burning up the sales charts. Speaking with the company's VP a Core Games, Danny Bilson, this week, we asked about Metro 2033 falling short a it be potential.

"I'll give ye the straight answer: It wasn't properly supported in all areas," Bilson said frankly. "It be a cool deal," he explained a the publishing agreement with developer 4A Games, "where it be inexpensive 'n they be doing their stuff."

"Did the game need polish in certain areas? YARRRR." he admitted. "So when I say it wasn't fully supported, it be product development 'n marketing that didn't support it the way it best've been." Bilson described Metro 2033 as "an orphan stepchild," saying that "a great marketer picked it up with four months t' go 'n did what he could with four months t' go, but it wasn't properly nurtured by marketing."

The absence a polish, Bilson assured, won't be an issue for Metro 2034, the in-development sequel. "The new one doesn't have any a those issues," Bilson said. "I green-lit the sequel before [the first] one shipped, because I know what [4A Games be] capable a -- I knew how cool it be."

THQ asks for 'patience' as it tries t' solve Metro 2033 DLC Achievement issue

When THQ's Metro 2033 be patched t' support the "Ranger Pack" DLC something went wrong with the game's Achievements. The problem be first acknowledged on August 3 'n noted as potentially an issue on Microsoft's end as a August 5. A couple weeks back the publisher told Joystiq it be still "investigating."

THQ has sent us over an updated statement on the issue:
"We understand some people be still experiencing issues with achievements unlocking in the Metro 2033 Ranger Pack DLC. We be currently working with Microsoft t' ascertain whether this be due t' a code related issue with the DLC itself, or an error in the Marketplace process whereby the DLC be added t' Xbox LIVE Marketplace before the new achievement data be added - this exact issue has happened t' other games in the past, but we need t' be sure that this be what's happening here. We realize this be frustrating for those a ye who have been waiting t' enjoy the Ranger Pack DLC, 'n we ask for yer patience as we try t' pinpoint the exact issue 'n solution." In the meantime, it be probably best not t' download the expansion pack until the problem be resolved. It appears the normal game still works fine. We'll be sure t' update once a fix for the problem goes live. Now, remind us, what's the point a Microsoft certification again?

THQ's sleeper subway hit, Metro 2033, be patched recently in support a the "Ranger Pack" DLC, but it appears the update clashed with how the game tracks Achievements. Conflicted reports suggest the patch prevents all Achievements in the game, or simply the ones from the Ranger Pack -- either way, it be still a problem in need a a correction. According t' the official Metro 2033 Twitter account, the publisher has been aware a the problem since August 3, most recently acknowledging the situation on August 5 as something on Microsoft's end.

In a statement t' Joystiq, a THQ representative said, "We be aware a some crew experiencing issues with achievements for Metro 2033's Ranger Pack DLC. We be currently investigating this issue with Microsoft 'n expect t' have a resolution shortly." The representative added that the company best have something more concrete t' share in "the coming days."

THQ 'n 4A Games have announced Metro 2033's minimalistic DLC, the "Ranger Pack," will launch on Xbox Live Marketplace 'n Steam next Tuesday, August 3. The update will allow players t' traverse the game in Ranger Mode, which "dramatically" reduces the amount a ammo ye'll stumble upon but increases the damage dealt by players 'n enemies alike. It also adds a "Ranger Hardcore" mode, which does the same thing, but completely does away with the player's HUD, meaning ye'll be able t' see all those things that be killing ye with unparalleled clarity.

The pack, which also adds new weapons 'n Achievements t' the game, will arrive as a free update for Steam crew -- though Xbox 360 players will have t' purchase it from the Marketplace for 240 Microsoft Points ($3).

If ye've scoured every corner 'n looted every corpse littering Metro 2033's post-apocalyptic train terrain, ye've already demonstrated a remarkable will t' survive. Developer 4A Games has chosen t' expand on that lonely experience with the game's upcoming DLC, the "Ranger Pack."

As 4A previously stated, there won't be any added narrative nor awkwardly tacked-on multiplayer. Instead, ye'll gain access t' "Ranger Mode," a game modifier that reduces ammo "dramatically" while increasing damage a all attacks, including yours 'n those a yer enemies. In addition, "Ranger Hardcore" will remove the already-sparse HUD entirely, 'n completing it will likely unlock some a the new Achievements (for a total a 250 Gamerscore).

that be a fairly minimal addition -- a subtraction even -- for DLC, but ye'll also have t' weigh the benefits a the new Heavy Automatic Shotgun, which be being introduced alongside the Volt Drive, "Miller's signature gun." (Not even pens survived the nukes?)

4A 'n THQ aren't ready t' sign off on a release date yet, but it be due on Steam 'n Xbox Live Marketplace "in the very near future." Pricing be currently the more delicate issue, even if the "Ranger Pack" be clearly aimed at the game's biggest proponents. 'n it be especially delicate if ye're in the crowd that be really into multicolored kung-fu teenagers with attitude.

We don't know what bottles a rum will be added t' the atmospheric foreign-person shooter, only what won't be included: nothing multiplayer ("not possible") 'n "it won't be new SP [single-player] narrative content, 'missing levels' or anything like that." In fact, the DLC only began production back in March. We'll be sure t' let ye know more as soon as we hear it, seemingly later this week.

Metro 2033 has been 'very profitable' for THQ, CEO says

Metro 2033 be released at the tail end a publisher THQ's last fiscal year, which ended March 31. With only two weeks a sales before the close a the fiscal fourth quarter, the 4A Games-developed title did not make a significant contribution t' THQ's trumpeted turnaround. Still, THQ CEO Brain Farrell took a few moments during the company's earnings call today t' highlight the game's sales t' date. "it be a very profitable title for us," Farrell said, without disclosing a number.

Farrell did reveal that Europe has accounted for roughly two-thirds a Metro 2033 sales, as forecast by the publisher, with North America buying up the remaining units sold. "A lot a the sales be done on PC," he added, "'n a lot a the sales be also done through digital mechanisms that don't pillage captured by any service."

The CEO attributed profits t' the game's low-cost development model, "so when we pillage t' even pretty modest levels a sales, we be still making good money." (First-time, Eastern European studios make cheap games, apparently.) "'n we like that model going forward," Farrell noted, when it produces a high-quality game.

After all, first-time, Eastern European studios can make good, cheap games, too. (Apparently.)
