As prophesied (well, reported) by the god among men that is Nathan ‘big dawg’ Grayson, recent MMO TERA is to hop aboard the divisive ship Free To Play. Its new version, with its free client, has now gone live. Apparently free players will have access to all the game’s content, but if you join ‘TERA Club’ you’ll get all manner of in-game boosts. Existent subscribers fall somewhere in the middle. More details on that side of things here. All and sundry, meanwhile, will find themselves paying extra for stuff like character sots.

TERA: Rising, as it is is now known, is available in Europe right now. As far as I can tell it’s already free in the US too. I’ve put a video below, but you can watch that in any country. Apart from China, probably. I hear the guys in charge over there are right dicks.(more…)

I actually played a decent amount of Tera when it first launched, and I really enjoyed certain aspects. The sublimely timing-based hack ‘n’ slashery was to die for, and the war beavers easily ranked among gaming’s best. But goodness, those quests were a deal-breaker. When lumbering Big Ass Monsters weren’t involved, they epitomized MMO monotony. Go here, kill ten of these, go here, kill ten of another incredibly similar thing, THIS IS WHAT BEING A HERO FEELS LIKE YEAH. Point is, Tera’s best taken in small doses, but a looming subscription fee always made that a pretty bitter pill to swallow. So now’s the part where I conveniently tell you about that fee’s impending demise while also notifying you of promising promises like this one: “Tera will be free. No level, time, or content restrictions.”

#tera Guess it was only a matter of time, huh, Tera? #review True story — during my time playing En Masse Entertainment's MMO Tera, my guild and I were attempting to recreate the trailer for the film 300 in-game for some silly reason. When it came time to capture video for the Oracle scene, we went with a series of sultry and mildly demonic Castanic females dancing by a fountain to take the place of the writhing young naked girl from the movie. Each looked much like this statue from E2046's Gathering line, strips of metallic armor barely covering their delicate skin — pretty naked, but not quite naked enough. More »

In the grand scheme of MMOs, Tera actually has quite a lot going for it. The combat’s brisk, high-flying, and surprisingly tense, there’s a fairly ambitious political machine chugging along in the background, and its selection of beaver/badger/cat/dog/catdog people is second-to-none. Unfortunately, the glue that holds it all together – a bog-standard kill/collect quest grind – isn’t so hot, and unsurprisingly, players noticed. So Tera’s world of Big-Ass Monsters and regular-size-ass everything else is getting quite a bit smaller.

As an American born and raised, I naturally fear two things: monarchy and giants. Watching the trailer for Tera’s next big update, then, was quite an emotional journey for me, because it featured both in one larger-than-life, laser-firing package. Sorry, god, this queen doesn’t need saving. But she’ll totally beat you up. And your dad, too, if you don’t watch it. If, however, the very sight of that thing makes the boiling warrior blood drain from your veins as quickly as it does mine, there’s also the long-awaited introduction of PVP battlegrounds, some new skills, and raid content. Jump beyond our True Action Break for a rather impressive-looking trailer.

#tera The Argon Queen update for En Masse Entertainment's action-packed massively multiplayer online role-playing game Tera drops next month in North America, bringing with it player-versus-player battlegrounds, a 10-man raid, new skills and a nagging reminder that I should probably log into the game sometime this month. Once upon a time, streamlined WoW-style questing, raiding, and PVP felt fresh and daring. However, like most things that begin with the phrase “once upon a time,” the very notion seems almost unbelievable in this day and age – more akin to a swords ‘n’ sorcery fairytale than actual historical fact. And so, many MMOs that were once treading water have recently realized that they were in quicksand all along. In many ways, Tera‘s easily as guilty as anyone else with its utterly tedious questing and tired world design, but the action-heavy MMO’s hardly resting on its laurels. Its province-running political system is an attempt to add a dash of EVE-style intrigue to the tried-and-true MMO formula, and the results thus far have ranged from brilliantly outside-the-box to well inside the range of the banhammer.

As the legends tell it, once upon a time – many mist-enshrouded moons ago – MMOs demanded consistent tributes of money every month, or else they’d destroy the world. Well, their world. For you, specifically. Now, though, all but a final bastion of behemoths who practice The Old Way have moved on to F2P. One such holdout, however, is Tera, En Masse’s swords ‘n’ sorcery to-do with a focus on bopping giant monsters and actually moving during combat. Unfortunately, its quests set the MMO level treadmill at walking pace and pipe low-volume elevator music through your headphones, so its new seven-day free trial is probably a good chance to see if enjoyable combat alone can sustain your interest.

TERA is using the grainy magic of Gaikai’s cloud gaming service to bring us all the first thirty minutes of the – admittedly very pretty – fantasy MMO. Yes, it’s free and (depending on connection speed) an instant thing to try out. I’m not convinced that streaming like this is the future of gaming, but it might just be the future of demos, especially when it sidesteps the 20gb clients we have to face for the “trial” versions of MMOs. That’s pretty neat.

Oh the many ways in which games are better than the real world! MMO TERA‘s first update has fixed its political system, allowing “players with a level 50 character that also proudly serves as a guild leader will be able to run for office in 15 provinces.” The election results will be counted on May 23rd at 11 o’clock, in an election where “all characters level 20 and above will be able to decide which players will be the first Vanarchs to be immortalised in TERA‘s history books.” Interesting that a political system patch should be at the top of their priorities, but there you have it. More patch details here.

And I have to ask if any RPS readers are playing this? I know none of us have dared take a look yet. More importantly, I suppose, are any of you voting?

The teams behind TERA must be sighing at the news they’re going up against the Diablo III open beta this weekend, but that’s nevertheless what they’re doing. If you’re not bash skeletons in Blizzard’s forthcoming sequel, then perhaps you might want to nose at the freshly-converted “action” MMO, TERA. Converted, that is, from its natural Korean state, where it has already been running for some time. To sign up for the beta get an account here. I understand the client is a whopper too, so you might want to get downloading.

Or perhaps “greetings” followed by a bow, a graceful flourish, and a knowing air of superiority. Something suitably elfish. I don’t really know what they say, but – thanks to a new trailer – I’ve seen them do their pointy eared thing, and I can safely say that they are, in fact, elves. You know the drill: fleet-footed battle prancing, slow-mo flips and twists, and female attire that’d prove woefully inadequate in any battle involving ordinances more powerful than bath foam. It all looks nicely fast-paced and heavy hitting, though. Check out the trailer in this post’s southern reaches, where mortal men fear to tread.(more…)
