From the very, very beginning – back when we were still a skeleton team of just the core key members – Mr. Yamazaki, the scenario director kept insisting that “evidence shouldn’t be the only way to arrive at the truth – let’s find a way to add human emotions and psychological analysis to the mix!” ...Which is all fine and dandy, but isn’t court all about the evidence? “How can people’s emotions reliably lead to new breaks in a case?” I wondered with anticipation. This was going to require some extremely outside-the-box ideas, I thought. Ideas like...

・Mysterious goggles that allows the player to see a witness’s true personality as a specter!”
・A super high-tech, giant computer that can analyze a witness’s brain waves and heart rate!”

Talking with other members of the team, reading a ton of books on psychology, writing up a bunch of new ideas, showing them to Mr. Yamazaki, and then showing the rejected ones to the shredder became a daily routine for me. “That’s a pretty nifty idea...” he would say, but I could tell by looking at him that, “It’s just not working for me,” is what he was really feeling. When I sat down to reflect on this, it suddenly dawned on me. “What you’re saying and what you’re feeling are in contradiction to one another, Mr. Yamazaki...” I thought to myself, and in that moment, the underlying concept behind the Mood Matrix was born.

Demand #1: All three defense attorneys must have a story of their own!

There are three protagonists in this game: Phoenix Wright, Apollo Justice, and Athena Cykes.

Phoenix returns as the main protagonist, but I knew that just bringing him back wouldn’t be enough, so I gave him two subordinates, which is a first for him. So “Would he live up to being a good boss to his two promising young lawyers?” became the theme of his story.

And let’s not forget about the star of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, Apollo himself. He plays a crucial role in this game as well. What sort of gripping drama could his bandages and that mysterious blue jacket signify, do you suppose?

・Athena’s name continues the tradition of protagonists being named after a mythical creature or a powerful god.

Find out more about Athena Cykes here

・Athena’s last name is spelled “Cykes” with a “C” for two main reasons: 1) the more common spelling “Sykes” is too similar to Ema Skye’s last name and 2) the crescent shape of the letter C ties into her overall character design – from the crescent moon motif in the Mood Matrix icon and on her glove to the earring she likes to play with when she’s thinking.

Hi everyone! Janet Hsu here from Capcom Japan! I’m the Localization Director for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, though I’m hardly new to the series as my involvement as the localization lead/lead translator these past 8 years and 5 (including this one) AA games can attest to. As some of you may already know, in our effort to work closer with the dev team as they were making the game, we integrated AA: DD’s localization into the overall dev process. The result is a level of behind-the-scenes access we’ve never had before, enabling us to faithfully preserve the intentions of the Japanese version while bringing you the localized world of Ace Attorney you know and (hopefully) love.

With that in mind, I’d like to take the next few weeks to share a few of those behind-the-scenes tidbits as we count down to AA: DD’s release on October 24th! So, without further ado, here is the Art Director, Mr. Takuro Fuse, to explain how he and his team created the wonderful character designs and models for this game.

It seems like Ace Attorney fans have been riding a wave of good news as of late. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies is headed to the US/EU at breakneck speed, the 3DS eShop will be receiving extended content and costumes, and it’s coming out at a lower than expected price ($29.99 / €24.99.) But there was one last piece of the puzzle that needed to fall into place… and that piece is: OCTOBER 24TH.

Yep, yep! Just one week or so before Halloween, players may once again don the badge of the acest of all attorneys, Phoenix Wright, taking to courtrooms and crime scenes in order to uncover clues, present evidence, and do battle with puzzling injustice.

Of course Phoenix will be joined by familiar cohorts like Apollo Justice, as well as the all-new associate attorney Athena Cykes, so let’s follow that fresh aroma to a character we haven’t officially revealed before...

We’ve also got come new screenshots today, many of which offer updated looks at Apollo, Athena and prosecutor Simon Blackquill in action. However, longtime fans might be more excited to see your first glimpse at Pearl Fey in Dual Destinies:

To recap, we present this evidence today: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies launches in the Nintendo 3DS eShop on October 24th and is priced at $29.99 / €24.99. You can catch up on the proceedings with Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD right now on iOS, and we’ll be doing character recaps leading up ‘til then. For more Ace Attorney news, screenshots and discussions head here.

Coming from Producer Motohide Eshiro...

I can tell you that once it's out there and once we see what people think, we'll have a good idea on what direction to go in next. I personally love the Ace Attorney universe. I don't want it to end, I don't think it will end with this. Exactly what shape it will take remains to be seen. Can't talk too much about that now, but I highly doubt this will be the end of Ace Attorney and Phoenix Wright.

As you can see, there's not asterisk next to Phoenix Wright. Could this title see retail release in Europe? Thanks to Matt for the heads up!

Did you notice something about the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies trailers we posted today? You might have seen that the game has earned itself an M rating, which is a first for the series. The title is rated PEGI 16 in Europe.

Well, this is some bad news for European markets. Motohide Eshiro, producer of Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, confirmed that the title will head to European markets, but will only offer an English translation. Eshiro says this is because the dev team wanted to shorten the release dates inbetween Japan and North America, so work on the English translation started right away.

The following info comes from a Polygon interview with producer Motehide Eshiro...

- development team wanted to reduce the delay between the release of the Japanese/English versions

"The reason we are releasing the game as digital only is not primarily due to a lack of retail support. One of the main reasons we went for a digital version is it wil be more convenient for the users. We felt that if someone will be interested in Dual Destinies they will want to get it right away, and if we offer a digital version, instead of going to a store however many miles away, they can just download it directly to their 3DS.

We didn't want to have too much lag time between the Japanese and American versions. Offering a downable version was one of the ways to cut down that lag time."

- if there if fans push hard for a physical release, Capcom will consider
- no plans to bring past or future Ace Attorney titles to consoles.

"The series is popular as handheld games. In Japan, everyone takes the train to work so it's easy for someone to start up the game and play for a little bit while they're on the train. In North America it's a bit harder because everyone drives to work. That's something we would have to think about at [Capcom] and see if it's a viable solution for the series."

Just to clear up any lingering confusion, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is available on the App Store right now, after being delayed from fall to July, and then moved back up to May 30. That's today, and the game is definitely out.

The iOS trilogy includes the first three Phoenix Wright games, Ace Attorney, Ace Attorney Justice for All, and Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations. The initial two episodes of the first game, Ace Attorney, are free, and the remaining three episodes in that game are $6. The following two games are $7 each, or there's a pack that includes all of the games and all episodes for $17.

Got all that? Dang, legalese is confusing.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD has been pegged for a May 30 launch on iOS. The game was initially announced for last fall, pushed back to July and has now been bumped up to the end of this month.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD is a bundle of the first three DS games, Ace Attorney, Justice for All and Trials and Tribulations, all "remastered and enhanced for retina displays," Capcom says. The app itself is a free download for iOS 5.0 and greater devices, with the first two chapters of the first game serving as a demo. Each game may be purchased separately - the first is $6 and the other two are $7 each - or in a collection for $17.

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy HD won't be summoned onto iOS devices as planned this month after Capcom adjourned the game again. The upscaled remastering of the three DS games was originally due last fall, but delays took it into early 2013, then April.

In a hardly encouraging but certainly candid post on the Ask Capcom forums, Senior VP Christian Svensson said, "For reasons unknown to me, the release has slid another several months to July. Sorry guys."

When the free-to-download app eventually arrives, it'll feature Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations as purchasable games within it, both separately and bundled together. It'll also include an 'Everybody Object' mode that lets you email and tweet Phoenix Wright catchphrases via sound files and animated tweets, which by our reckoning would work as its own app, really.

Ichi the Killer director Takashi Miike delivers a pitch-perfect adaptation of the DS video game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Ace Attorney, feature-length film, is hitting North American shores this June at the AM2 (anime, manga and music) convention in Anaheim, California. Ace Attorney, directed by Ichi the Killer's Takashi Miike, debuted as a feature film in Japan earlier this month.

AM2 will hold two exclusive screenings at the Anaheim Convention Center, one for passport holders only and one with pass holders preferred and general audience as seating permits. The AM2 convention runs from June 15-17.

While this isn't exactly a widespread theatrical release for Ace Attorney, it does open the doors for US screenings. Keep your eyes on your local independent theaters for a chance to see all the cartoony flair (and hair) of Phoenix Wright in reality.

Amazon is trying once again to lay claim to all of your money in a single day, with a set of video game Lightning Deals. If you're quick, you can grab the first right now: Phoenix Wright for $16.

Judging by the clues, following deals should get you Ace Combat: Assault Horizon, No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise, Sonic Free Riders, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, and more. If you're not into the rush of extremely time-limited deals, feel free to take the day to think about buying FIFA Soccer 12. You can see the whole list of deals here.

If you need a console to play these impulse purchases on, Amazon is also offering $50 in credit with purchase of the 4GB Xbox, the Modern Warfare 3 bundle and the 160GB PS3.

If you were wondering how Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney would look as interpreted by director Takashi Miike, the answer is in the promotional image above: it looks exactly like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

That shockingly meticulous promo image was released along with a teaser site for the Ace Attorney movie, which revealed a February 11 release date. In Japan, obviously. No announcements have been made regarding a US release -- but if the rest of the movie is as accurate as this, we'll know every line of dialogue anyway.

Capcom has officially announced that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will head to the cineplexes of Japan in Spring 2012. Wright will be played by Hiroki Narimiya (not ringing any bells?), while antagonistic attorney Miles Edgeworth will be played by Takumi Saito. Phoenix's charmingly naive assistant, Maya Fey, will be channeled by Mirei Kiritani.

Of course, you'll probably recognize the director (as reported earlier): Takashi Miike of Audition, Crows Zero and -- most recently -- Thirteen Assassins.

If you find the idea of a live-action, comedic courtroom adventure odd, you must not have been around for the Phoenix Wright musical a couple years back.

[Thanks, Matthew]

Hiroki Narimiya as the lovable Phoenix Wright.

It's hard to believe the director of Iichi the Killer and Audition, both notoriously violent (and awesome) films, is behind the lens of Capcom's now-filming Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney movie, but it's true.

After Miike casually mentioned this as his next project earlier in the week, Capcom has confirmed Miike's the one helping bring Phoenix Wright to life. Capcom plans to release the film (at least in Japan) in spring 2012, but as the news is coming out of Japan, there's no word so far on whether this film will make it outside of there.

Capcom did release Keiji Inafune's wacky live-action Dead Rising production over Xbox Live, though, so anything's possible.

Capcom's also detailed a few bits of casting, including Hiroki Narimiya as Phoenix Wright, Takumi Saito as Miles Edgeworth and Mirei Kiritani as Maya Fey. Is that good casting? You tell me, guys.

By the way, this is what Miike is usually responsible for:

If you're looking for Capcom-branded goods on the cheap, the Capcom store is having a limited-time Flash sale. For the next few hours, you can get the custom light-up Dark Void statue seen above or a copy of Phoenix Wright for the DS at a discounted price.

The Dark Void statue was limited to a run of 1,000 made specifically for Capcom fan events. Normally it'd retail for $90, but it's only $30 right now; Phoenix Wright is half-off at $15.

Here's a deal sure to bring no objections: those who pre-order Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective from Capcom Store can bundle it with the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney for an extra $10. The $40 bundle nets you the $30 Ghost Trick and a new copy of the out-of-print Phoenix Wright for cheaper than you'd get it pre-owned at the local gaming Pawn Star.

Phoenix Wright is currently leaving the ace attorney work to Edgeworth, as he prepares for his next big case with Professor Layton. Ghost Trick will be released on January 11.

Capcom must be planning something big for the 10th anniversary of the Ace Attorney series, as it's opened an anniversary website exactly one year early. Either that or someone thought this year was the 10th anniversary, and Capcom just decided to roll with it.

The anniversary site features commentary by series composers, staff, and even the actress who played Phoenix Wright in the Takarazuka Revue musicals. There's also an interview with creator Shu Takumi, who started work on the first Phoenix Wright as a summer project after Dino Crisis 2.

Meanwhile, Andriasang reports that a "???x???" link at the official site displays a book with the words "Majo Saiban" ("Witch Judgment") on it, suggesting a collaboration between the TV drama by that name and the Ace Attorney series. Curiously, the book is blank when we look at it.

We already recommend Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney without hesitation, but now we're even quicker to do so. In honor of Comic-Con (for some reason), Capcom has temporarily marked down the iPhone version of Phoenix Wright, along with several other iPhone and even iPad games. We suggest you take that! ... opportunity and pick up Phoenix Wright for just $2.99.

Other highlights include the iPad and iPhone versions of Resident Evil 4 for $2.99 each, Street Fighter 4 for $6.99, and Dark Void Zero for just .99. Mega Man 2 is also just .99, if you want to hate your iPhone. See the full list of discounted games after the break.

Capcom notes that Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil Degeneration, Resident Evil 4, and Phoenix Wright will go back to regular price after July 25, but offers no expiration date for the other titles.

Capcom announced that "Rise from the Ashes," the fifth case of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney created for the DS version, is now available as DLC for the WiiWare version of Phoenix Wright. The timing is a little weird on this, since it's DLC for the first game, coming after the release of the second and third Phoenix Wright games. Not that it really matters -- the series jumps back and forth along its timeline anyway.

If you've played through the full game on WiiWare, you should probably check this case out for 100 Wii Points. Sadly, Maya Fey isn't present, but you'll be introduced to Ema Skye, and, more importantly, you'll have hours and hours of investigation and arguing ahead of you. Even if it stings a little to pay an extra dollar on top of the cost of the game, now that the even cheaper iPhone port is out.
