EA Won't Be Paying For Real Guns In Video Games Anymore

A report on Reuters says that following recent events like the Newtown school shooting, and the controversy over the company's relationship with arms manufacturers, Electronic Arts has made the decision to stop paying for the rights to use real weapons in its video games. But it's still going to use them anyway. Just like it did when Bell launched legal action in 2012 over Battlefield's use of helicopter designs, EA tells Reuters that, despite an intent to copy the designs and even name of famous firearms, it will no longer be paying for that privilege, believing it has a constitutional right under the tenets of free speech to use trademarks without permission. "We're telling a story and we have a point of view," EA's President of Labels Frank Gibeau told Reuters. "A book doesn't pay for saying the word 'Colt,' for example." While the Medal of Honor franchise has been put to bed, EA still plans to release an entry in the Battlefield series - which features contemporary military hardware - later this year. #warandvideogames EA's first-person shooter series Medal of Honor has been around so long that it's easy for a gamer to think of the words "Medal of Honor" as just a video game brand, no more tied to a real thing in the non-gaming word as a phrase like "brothers in arms", "company of heroes" or "call of duty". There Will Apparently Be a New Medal of Honor, and it Will Apparently Be Called 'Warfighter'

If you're the sort of person who simply cannot get enough of video game soldiers fighting video game wars that may or may not closely resemble real life wars and soldiers, then has EA ever got an announcement for you.

No, this isn't a screenshot of Medal of Honor: Warfighter. We don't have any of those yet.

Though the publisher hasn't come out with a press release or anything yet, Game Informer is reporting that the upcoming issue of Official Xbox Magazine unveils EA's latest spin on dudes fighting wars in Medal of Honor: Warfighter.

Developed by Danger Close Games, the team behind the 2010 Medal of Honor reboot that our Jeff Gerstmann was not overly fond of, Warfighter will once again follow a team of Tier One Operators, and will be developed using DICE's Frostbite 2.0 engine, the same used on Battlefield 3. Multiplayer will be built in-house this time around, as opposed to last time, where it was farmed out to DICE.

EA is expected to reveal more of Medal of Honor: Warfighter at GDC next month. Or, you know, you can just pick up a copy of OXM and see all the screenshots and interviews and what have you. That's what it's there for, after all.

Amazon offering dramatic discounts on digital EA games starting this Sunday

Amazon doesn't care for your silly stack of unplayed, unopened games -- it simply wants to trick you into buying more with a variety of impressive deals, albeit on games that exist only in the digital realm. Starting this coming Sunday (the 15th) and running through the end of the week (the 21st), individual EA titles will be offered day by day at ridiculously discounted prices: Bulletstorm and Dead Space 2 for $7 a pop, for instance.

The daily itemized list is jut after the break, should you be preparing for yet another (admittedly minor) assault on your bank account in the effort to catch up on 2011's best games. Might we suggest conquering the concept of time scarcity first?
