Here's something so nutty it might actually have worked: a few years back Sega's Australian studio pitched an idea for a series of remakes called "Sega Reborn", which wouldn't just recreate classic games like Golden Axe and Altered Beast, but somehow tie them into the same, single universe.Read more...

#showus There's no doubt that ninja are among the coolest video game characters. They do everything with style; running, jumping, fighting, even breathing. These games—mostly platformers—were able to capture this no matter how limited the hardware capacity was; ninja always look awesome. More »

It's the Virtual Consoliest day of 2012! Between the Wii and 3DS, there are four new Virtual Console games you can buy today. On 3DS, of course, that means Game Gear support has arrived. On Wii, it means Samurai Shodown IV, originally for Neo Geo.

There's also some free entertainment to be found on the 3DS Nintendo Video service, where a 3D Kid Icarus anime is probably being delivered to you over SpotPass right this second.

Today marks the return of the Shinobi series, SEGA's cult hit from back in the day. I'm already hacking, slashing and generally getting my ninja on with this new 3DS, side-scrolling adventure, so expect my full review to show up right here on IGN's 3DS channel in the next day or so...

Though Griptonite Games may not be the original developers of Sega's beloved Shinobi franchise, it seems like there are at least a handful of people on the team that care about producing a faithful update to the side-scrolling ninja action found in games like Shinobi, The Revenge of Shinobi, and Shinobi III. The company's new Shinobi game for the Nintendo 3DS looks like it might be a pretty cool throwback to those days.

Shinobi--yeah, it's known as simply "Shinobi"--is a polygonal game with 2D gameplay that puts you in the role of Joe Musashi's father, Jiro Musashi. You'll run to the right (and sometimes the left!) and slice up enemies with a sword as you go. You can also opt to toss out some throwing knives, though instead of having you pick up additional knives as you move through the levels, the game instead slowly refills your stock after you use them. It appears to have the effect of making sure that you have the knives ready when you absolutely need them, but you'll never have so many that you can just blast through every single enemy you face from a safe distance. As in previous games, if you double-jump and press the knife button, you'll toss out your entire stock of them at different angles, allowing you to deal with multiple enemies at once. You can also parry by tapping the right trigger at just the right time. The parry feels nice and works even if you're in the air, giving you the ability to deal with most incoming attacks fairly easily, provided you're good at timing your attempts.

Traversal is once again a factor, as well. In addition to those double jumps, you can also triangle jump off of walls and cling to specific handholds on walls to reach higher platforms. Ropes and other ceiling-type surfaces can be grappled to and hung from, and you can leap up and down through specific platforms to get higher or lower, as the case may be. As you might expect from a Shinobi game handled in this style, there are four different types of ninja magic to choose from, and you'll only be able to use magic once in a level (though perhaps there are additional magic refills to be found in crates around the levels).

The game appears to take high scores fairly seriously, with big, red negative numbers that pop out every time you get hit and a lower-screen score display that has enough zeroes on it to imply that scores might get up into the millions. The game will have a built-in achievement system that gives you 60 different things to accomplish, with each giving you an unlockable thing if you complete the task. Additional outfits are one of the available unlocks.

Visually, the game looked a little funky, and the 3D effects didn't really add much to the game. Your ninja, as well as the enemy ninjas, didn't look all that great, and the anime-style cutscenes that split up the action didn't really add much to the game, either. On the other hand, the game will apparently resurrect the first-person shuriken tossing minigame found in the original Shinobi and there will be a level that takes place on the wings of a jet, which was described as an After Burner reference, but not shown.

Either way, Shinobi looked fairly promising, and as long as the game continues to require a bit of skill to play effectively, it could be pretty neat. Sega's releasing it in September.

You heard about its existence earlier this week, and Nintendo Power took the liberty of confirming the title yesterday, but today Sega officially-officially unveiled the 3DS relaunch of the Shinobi series. Shinobi is a mix of original 2D side-scrolling gameplay with -- you guessed it! -- 3D occasionally mixed in.

This fall's 3DS title will follow Jiro Musashi, progenitor to the original game's main character, as he "becomes a true ninja legend" in the only way he knows how: "by mastering a brand new combo system switching between melee, ranged, and acrobatic attacks." The true ninja way!

Beyond announcing a September 2011 release window for Shinobi, Sega sent over a mess of new screens and a trailer with gameplay, which we've dropped after the break. Be careful to watch for shurikens as you sneak past the guards!

#handson Ignore that this is a 3D game for Nintendo's latest portable. Ignore that it's been nearly a decade since we've seen a new title staring Joe Musashi. Embrace, instead, the fact that this is a Shinobi that fans of the 1987 side-scrolling arcade game may recognize and could come to love. More »

I've never ever been good at Shinobi. I tried it on the SEGA Genesis and the SEGA collections that followed, but ducking at the right time and hitting enemies with shurikens has never been a strong suit of mine. Shinobi 3DS isn't the same game from back in the arcades thanks to pretty visuals and a bunch of bells and whistles, but it continues the tradition of making me feel like an inept ninja...

It's been quite some time since Sega's arcade-born ninja series Shinobi sliced up fools on consoles, but a recently discovered resume listing indicates that he may be making a return on Nintendo's 3DS. Griptonite Games environmental artist Branden Brushett explains his work on the unannounced title in detail, noting he "created whole levels for 'Shinobi' on the Nintendo 3DS, including many props for use in a variety of environments."

Unfortunately, aside from the news of the game existing, not much else is known -- the publishing rights holder, Sega, had yet to respond to a request for comment, nor had Mr. Brushett. And other than the news that the game will likely feature "hand painted and photo referenced textures," the resume doesn't illuminate anything else about the game.

You might say that information about Shinobi 3DS is hiding in the shadows, like a ninja, waiting to strike. And considering how strong our ninja detecting skills are, we'd wager E3 is a likely time for that strike. The "strike," likely, will just be a press release, so don't worry.

Just in case NIS America's Hyperdimension Neptunia wasn't weird enough, this newly released trailer highlights some of the classic Sega characters that inexplicably make an appearance. Also, don't ogle too much over the scantily-clad anime girls; you do know that they're video game consoles, right?

There's some classic platforming to be had in both Rayman and Shinobi in this week's Nintendo downloads, and even a way to deal with Jack's overabundance of stress in Stop Stress: A Day of Fury. There's over ten titles in all, so cruise past the break for the full list.

Martial arts is the theme on the Virtual Console this week, as Sega and Capcom both offer up entries in their respective franchises. Unless you like to punch things, throw pointy things at things or kick things -- or maybe some kind of mixture of all that -- then you'll probably want to skip this week's downloads. Pacifists need not apply! Street Fighter Alpha 2 (SNES, 1 - 2 players, 800 Wii Points) Shinobi (VC Arcade, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Every week, we like to check out what's new on the Virtual Console. We offer these videos as a sort of taste to help you decide whether or not you would want the game in question. We also toss in our own two cents because we're pushy jerks like that.
