#epicgames My trip to North Carolina to attend the East Coast Games Conference in Raleigh last week was a ruse, a feint. My real target was a (mostly) unassuming office structure in the Raleigh suburb of Cary, the birthplace of some of the greatest games of the past decade. More »

#deadspace A lot of games set out to tell engaging stories. Some use a narrator, lots of cutscenes or branching dialogue systems. Others embed plot points in the environment. Success rates vary, of course. But what's the worst storytelling in video games? Why, Gears of War, says Dead Space story producer Chuck Beaver. More »

Epic Games may be best known for the awesome Jazz Jackrabbit, but it seems like they’re ready to move on to other things. Other things on the PC, apparently. Epic’s newly teased PC-only project has, in all seriousness, been a long time in coming. ”We might be working on a PC-only title,” Epic president Mike Capps said during a PAX panel (via Joystiq). Bleszinski then drove the point home in his trademark chainsaw-gun-like fashion. “Let me say that again: we are working on a PC game.” Apparently, it’s an unannounced project, so that probably rules out the Minecraft-inspired Fortnite. Epic’s staying tight-lipped beyond that, but for now “existent” is a step in the right direction.

Free-to-play Unreal Tournament? Why, that would just be wild speculation…

#gearsofwar It's not only smaller, younger developers who have to worry about cloning. Idea theft is on the minds of the people at Epic Games, too. Even though they make big, burly games like Gears of War and Bulletstorm, the developer still sees themselves as an indie, said Epic CEO Tim Sweeney. People could try and do what Epic does, he offered, but the studio's titles have size on their size. More »

#xboxlive This announcement oughta go over like a turd in a punchbowl. Seems that on Jan. 1, Xbox Live is taking guns away from all avatars. That is according to Epic Games' community manager, who in a reminder to Gears of War fans said that if they don't have the Lancer or Hammerburst avatar props, they better run go get strapped because all guns are verboten after the new year. #fortnite They teased it earlier this week and tonight on the VGAs, the makers of Gears of War 3 revealed their newest game. Called Fortnite, it appears to expand on the fortification/tower defense mechanics introduced in Gears of War 3 with an all-new art style that leaves the gritty, steroidal look of previous Epic games behind. We'll have more on Fortnite when we learn it. More »

#gearsofwar All you Kremlinologists who like to parse secrets out of video clips are SOL on this one. The teasing's strictly of the verbal variety as Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski hints an all-new game during a promo for the upcoming Spike Video Game Awards. Viewers don't get much to work with, other than clips of Gears of War and Infinity Blade games. With sequels for both of those franchises recently released, we can probably rule out. In the tweet that Spike's Geoff Keighley sent out earlier today, the game was called "a surprise new franchise." All Bleszinski says is that it's an "entirely fresh new experience" which seems to indicate that it'll be a new franchise. Hmm. More »
