The Angry Birds movie is happening. Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on to produce, and Iron Man executive producer David Maisel is taking the same role in Rovio's feature film. The Angry Birds movie is set to hit theaters in summer 2016, and it's fully funded and produced by Rovio outside of the standard studio system.

"John's an exceptionally talented producer, and we're delighted to have him join the flock," says Mikael Hed, Rovio CEO. "With John's hands-on producer background and David's expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things."

Rovio held meetings with Hollywood advisers in 2010 and was rumored to have sought funding to the tune of $1.2 billion in 2011 to expand its entertainment offerings. As this film takes off, keep one thing in mind: Cohen is the guy who thought 2007's Alvin and the Chipmunks was a good idea.

Namco Bandai recently posted its financial results for the first half of FY2011, a period running April - September. The results don't look too hot on paper -- the company's "Content" division (which encapsulates its console games branch) reported total sales of ¥7,145 billion ($879 million), while the company as a whole ended up with a net loss of ¥1.93 billion ($24 million). However, when compared to the ¥6.04 billion ($74 million) in net losses the company suffered during the first half of FY10, these figures are ... well, significantly less terrible.

The company's biggest seller released in the current fiscal year was the licensed adaptation of the animated film Despicable Me, which moved 390,000 copies during the first half. Trailing close behind was Dead to Rights: Retribution at 350,000 copies sold. Imagine what kind of a sales powerhouse Namco would have on its hands if Universal ever did an animated movie about a young boy and his insatiable, murderous dog.

A portion of a Nintendo Life review… While its main components aren’t bad, the whole thing’s repetitive and ends up evening out with about as many flaws as it has positive features. It’ll also likely take the average player, no matter the age, an afternoon or two to complete. It’s clear that the designers wanted to [...]

D3Publisher has announced details on its upcoming batch of Despicable Me games, coming to Wii, DS, PS2 and PSP this July. Coinciding with the animated film's debut and mirroring its premise of a supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell) plotting to steal the moon, Despicable Me: The Game lets you "experience the thrill of being downright despicable" and purchasing a licensed movie game.

You'll assume the role of supervillain Gru, who must use various gadgets, weapons and an army of minions to solve puzzles, pull off "the biggest heist in history" and best his rival, Vector. (Presumably, the game is over when Vector has been beaten by, uh, Gru.)

Despicable Me: The Game will launch on the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable -- courtesy of Monkey Bar Games -- while a separate title, Despicable Me: The Game - Minion Mayhem is being cooked up (Fillet Minion joke goes here) just for DS by the increasingly visible WayForward.
