With over 300 monsters - some of which are extremely tricky to catch - Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 will keep you busy for a while, but it doesn't come close to capturing Pokémon's brilliance. It mightn't be another clone, but in the monster-battling stakes, this pretender ends up well beaten by its rival.

By the 10-hour mark, you'll have conquered (and discarded) many times more creatures than you'll have even encountered by the same milestone in Black and White. It's a brisk, no-nonsense take on the monster-collecting style of role-playing game. Sure, it's also a bit heartless, but as corporate America has taught us, sometimes that's what it takes to be efficient.

While you can't help but wish the adventure mode was designed with a little more ambition, it's difficult to fault given the nearly infinite amount of replay value the tournament aspects bring to the table.

"Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2" is a great addition to both the original and spin-off series, however it may not be for everyone. If you're a gamer that can't see the appeal of strategic, turn-based gameplay, or the fun of building a collection of virtual combatants, you should steer clear of this game. However, if you're looking for a "Dragon Quest" fix before "Dragon Quest X" drops sometime in the future, "Joker 2" should be able to scratch your RPG itch quite nicely.

Giant monsters like Bjorn are a neat addition to Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2. What inspired you to add these to the game?
We decided that giant monsters would definitely be more impressive, so the first thing we decided on was to include giant monsters. We knew we had something right then and there.

Player vs. player online battles are new for Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2. Why did you want to add this feature and how difficult was it to create?
We decided to add player vs. player online battles because of the strong demand for them from DQMJ1 players and because adding them would enable players to enjoy the game longer. The thing that made adding this feature difficult was the amount of time we had to spend checking it during development. Checking communication features during development is rough.

With a beautiful 3D world and an epic scale, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 could teach the Pokemon series a thing or two.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 doesn’t have the extra content made for Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 Professional, but there’s still plenty to see and catch in the first iterations of Joker 2.

A remake of 1998's Game Boy Color title Dragon Quest Monsters is officially heading to the 3DS, Square Enix has confirmed. The 3DS version will include all of the beasts from Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, as well as some new monsters and stories. Dragon Quest Monsters is expected to hit the 3DS in Japan in 2012.

Overall, the game is fairly robust, and your enjoyment will mostly depend on how much you like Pokémon, Dragon Quest, and JRPG's in general. If you are a completionist, there is tons of content to keep you busy and happy for quite a while. The game ran me about 65 or so hours, and for $30, you really are getting a lot of great value -- something synonymous with the Dragon Quest name, lately.

Because of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 for Nintendo DS, I'm addicted to mixing monsters. I've had my fill of catching and hunting them through other franchises, but mixing them -- raising two monsters then fusing them together to create a new, more powerful synthesis of the two -- that feels fresh...

...while it only offers a small bit of inspiration and fresh concepts, everything here for the most part is pretty solid. If you’re craving a new RPG experience on your Nintendo DS it’s a good bet you’ll find some enjoyment in Joker 2.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 may not be the most innovative creature-collecting game on the market, but it does a good job dangling carrots in front of players who don’t mind constant grinding. The underlying systems are solid, and the addition of online battles gives it more longevity than the previous title. You won’t find many other new features if you played the original Joker, but the familiarity doesn’t keep the formula from working on a basic level.

Do you have what it takes to be a monster scout champion?

Monster scouts can bend monsters to their will, creating teams of wild and wonderful beasts to send into fierce, nonstop battles against rival scouts. The greats and boldest scouts are set to meet in the Monster Scout Challenge, where they will fight for the honor of becoming champion of the world.

But it is no easy task to reach the arena where the tournament takes place. Only a select few, the best of the best, are able to secure spots on the airships that travel there.

One after another, the mighty ships take to the air and turn their prows in the direction of the distant arena. Stowed away among the fleet is a young monster scout. For years he has dreamed of becoming the monster scout champion of the world – a dream you can help him realize!

But his ambitions suffer a fatal setback when his airship is caught in a mysterious storm that seems to come out of nowhere. Buffeted by raging winds, the out-of-control airship plummets from the sky and crashes on a deserted, previously unknown island… an island home to colossal monsters the likes of which no monster scout has seen before!

Can you escape this strange and deadly island? Can you crack the enigma that lies at its heart? Will you reach the Monster Scout Challenge in time to claim the championship?

Somewhere on this mysterious island, the answers await. Find them. Your fate is your hands.

Hey gang, I've had this video for a couple days now but haven't had the chance to post up. Nintendo sent some Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 goodies my way, and I wanted to share with you. First up is a field guide that introduces you to some of the monsters you're going to see out in the game. Second is a secret, which you'll have to watch the video for!

Apologies for my disheveled look in this video. I recorded it after spending an hour bailing water out of our washing machine. It decided to leak through our second floor and drip down through our chandelier and pass-through. No joke!

The Dragon Quest Monsters series has delivered monster scouting fun to the masses for over a decade. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker hit the market in 2007 as a spin-off, adding in three-dimensional graphics and replacing random encounters with real-time ones. This means the monsters are actually running around the map with you, from the tiny ones to the behemoths, and it's up to you to chase down the ones you want to scout (or catch, in other words)...
