Brendan has been playing sandbox MMORPG, Mortal Online.

So this is how it ends. Trapped between two hissing lizard men and a fatally high, geographically unremarkable, cliff edge. The lizard men take another step and poke their razor sharp tridents at the air in front of me. The prongs of the weapon are barbed, and the barbs themselves are also barbed, which I consider to be unnecessary. I step back toward the cliff, completely unable to see the bottom. So this is how it ends. Lost in a hellish Congolese nightmare world, wearing nothing but rags and facing down two of the world’s most brutally rendered reptilians. Mortal Online, it’s been good. We had some good times, made some good memories. I would recite a few of them from the records in my leather-bound book but I lost it in that ravine, remember? Oh, Mortal. I wonder if someone found that book, would they think me a great adventurer? Or would they just throw it away and plunder my rucksack for the 500 gherkins you always said were weighing me down.(more…)

I’d somehow managed to avoid reading anything about Mortal Online until this morning. Upon hearing that the game’s free trial has been extended, now lasting forever, Jim directed me to this conversation about the player-driven sandbox MMORPG. He also said, “it’s a game where you spawn with just your pants” which caused my browser to instantly open a new tab and attempt to download the client. It took a couple of hours for me to get hold of it this morning due (presumably) to server errors, but now I’m all set and ready to run around in my pants. More info and a trailer below.

The friend of mine who got into Mortal Online used to try and sell me on it with the strangest stories. “There’s this one naked player who stands on a bridge all day and night and when players try to cross it he beats the crap out of them with a stick,” or “It’s so cool! At night you can’t see anything without a light.” And so on, and on. If you, like me, never ended up giving this hardcore sandbox MMORPG a shot, now is the time to try. Blues has word that developers Starvault have just started offering free 14 day trials, with no credit card required, and you’ve got to love an online game which has “Long-term wounds” and “Cooking” as the two most prominent items on its upcoming features list.
