Sportsfriends nears PSN debut, computer ports not far behind

Assuming everything goes to plan, multiplayer sports compilation Sportsfriends should appear on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 shortly.

Indie developer Die Gute Fabrik updated the Sportsfriends Kickstarter page to note that the game has been submitted to both the European and North American wings of Sony for inspection. If Sportsfriends needs no further alterations, Die Gute Fabrik claims that the game should reach the PlayStation 3 and 4 in "just a few weeks." This follows a delay announced in January, at which time the developer claimed that Sportsfriends required more polish before its public debut.

Additionally, Die Gute Fabrik claims that the PC version of Sportsfriends is up and running. Mac and Linux ports are not lagging far behind as the game's Atrophy Engine (licensed from Bit.Trip devs Gaijin Games) inherently supports all three flavors of operating system. "We're still hoping to release a backers-only Windows/Mac/Linux beta in conjunction with the PlayStation release so that everyone can start playing," said Die Gute Fabrik. "No guarantees, but we'll do our best and we'll keep you posted." [Image: Die Gut Fabrik]
Act Surprised Last of Us Is Coming to PS4

One of 2014's worst kept secrets has been The Last of Us coming to PlayStation 4, and now it's official for this summer. Naughty Dog's action thriller was already a technical marvel on PlayStation 3, and it's likely to stun on PS4, as well.

The company has said it's "targeting" 60 frames-per-second with the PS4 version. Naughty Dog is also aiming for "higher resolution character models, improved shadows and lighting, upgraded textures, along with even more improvements."

The news comes courtesy of the PlayStation Blog, and while we don't have any screens or video yet. But we do know it will come with the Left Behind single player expansion, and both Abandoned Territories and Reclaimed Territories multiplayer add-ons.

Layoffs hit Sega Europe following restructure in US

Sega Europe suffered "a limited number of redundancies" due to a restructuring in Sega of America's Sonic and mobile divisions. The layoffs follow those that hit Sega of America in October 2013 due to another restructure.

"Sega is in the process of consolidating certain functions of the Sonic and Mobile departments within Sega of America, where the management and production for those areas of the business reside," Sega told Joystiq via email. "As part of that strategy a limited number of redundancies have taken effect in our European office, based in London."

Sega slashed its profit forecasts in February for the fiscal year ending March 31, cutting its expected net income by 36.2 percent to 30 billion yen ($293.5 million). [Image: Sega]

The PAX East 2014 "Here's Where We're At" List

I forgot my toothbrush. I always forget something when I pack for trips like this, and this time it's my toothbrush. That's not a big deal, I can always run out and pick up another one. It's not like the time when I forgot to bring shirts to Japan, a country that is not set up to sell shirts that even resemble something I could wear. That was way worse. So I'm going to write this post about our PAX East schedule and then hit the streets of Brooklyn in search of a toothbrush (and some floss and lip balm, because hey, let's go all out).

I tend to enjoy myself at PAX and PAX East, it's a good time to get out, meet some people, see a few games, and hang around. We also get to get up in front of a crowd and talk garbage for multiple hours, which is pretty much my second-most-favorite thing to do in the whole wide world. We're doing it again this Saturday, and some of us have thrown in for multiple panels this year.

Also, for the first time ever, our PAX panel is scheduled to be livestreamed. We're not producing the stream, but the plan is to embed the official PAX Twitch player in our chat on Saturday night and Sunday so those of you not attending the show live can see it. But if you're on site, you should come see us in person! Say hi! Touch Brad! Kiss Alex!

Everything kicks off on Friday with a pair of events...

FRIDAY, 4PM
DRAGONFLY THEATRE
"Why Internet Jerks Aren't Going to Win, And You Can Help"

This panel will feature Patrick and Zoe Quinn, both of whom have experienced some total bullshit on the internet, and they've got some ideas about why it happens and how we, as a society, can move on from at least some of this negativity. I suspect no actual internet jerks will be in attendance, which is unfortunate, since they probably need the most help in realizing that they're garbage people made of actual garbage. Human garbage, basically. I want to see this panel!

FRIDAY, 8PM
Atlantic Beer Garden, 146 Seaport Blvd.
THIS EVENT IS 21+

We're going to a bar for a couple of hours and GameSpot's footing (some) of the bill. Come by and say hi! Talk F1 with Danny and Drew! Hey, if you think you're going to come out for this, do us a solid and RSVP on this Facebook page, if you can. You don't need a ticket to attend, they just want to get a general sense of how many people are coming out for this. This overlaps with part of the Cards Against Humanity panel, which sounds pretty amazing this year, so weigh your options carefully, friends!

OK, that's Friday. Saturday is pretty quiet for us during the day, but then there's this...

SATURDAY, 9PM
ALBATROSS THEATRE
The Giant Bomb Panel That We Do At PAX

This is why we're here. What will be on this panel? I have no idea. We'll be there for a couple of hours, talking mess and dragging up some of our friends to cause all sorts of new trouble. Last time out, Johnny V and John Drake almost got into a fist fight! Can we make them go at it for reals this year? Will we call Adam Boyes and make fun of him for getting sick and skipping PAX this year? You're going to have to come and see for yourself.

Sunday is another busy day, with a few of us scattering to appear on a handful of additional panels.

SUNDAY, 10:30AM
ALBATROSS THEATRE
The Royal Rumble

Alex and I will be here along with Rich Gallup, Eric Pope, Max Temkin, Dave Lang, and about 24 more people to play the Royal Rumble mode in Wrestlemania 2000 for the N64. Alex has been practicing. I have not. Who will come out victorious!?!?!?!??

SUNDAY, 1:30PM
ALBATROSS THEATRE
404ing It: Breaking (Down) the Internet

Myself, Eric Pope, and Max Temkin will be appearing on this special PAX edition Pat Baer's long-running UCB show. We will discuss the internet, videos that can be found on the internet, and the best ways to watch said videos. Don't miss it!

Or, actually, maybe you want to miss it... I won't be hurt, but only if you're skipping out on us to see this panel...

SUNDAY, 1:30PM
BUMBLEBEE THEATRE
PRODUCED

Vinny Caravella and Rich Gallup have produced various productions both in and out of the video game business for years and years and years. They'll swap stories and attempt to dispense a little wisdom about how you (yes, you!) can produce. Ask Rich to see his special "produced" hand motion, it's really something else. I want to see this panel! Maybe we can get a feed of this panel piped into the 404ing It panel and we'll just goof on them. I already know Rich's secret hand motion, how hard could this "production" stuff be, anyway?

OK! That's it for PAX, I need to get out and find this toothbrush. See you guys in Boston!

Super Smash Bros. Coming Out This Year

Nintendo hosted a Super Smash Bros.-exclusive edition of Nintendo DIrect yesterday, and while the company didn't deliver an exact release date for the highly anticipated fighting sequel, we got pretty close. Super Smash Bros. arrives this summer on 3DS and this winter on Wii U. (The company has its priorities.)

There were plenty of new details revealed last night, as well.

Greninja, also known as the final evolution of Froakie from Pokemon X and Y, is one of the brand-new fighters. Sheik, Zero Suit Samus, Yoshi, and Charizard are all back, as well.

The 3DS version of the game will run "most" gameplay elements at 60 frames-per-second, a rather impressive feat for the handheld. 3DS players will also have exclusive access to the Smash Run mode, in which players enter into a dungeon, collect as many power-ups as possible, and then fight each other in an arena.

Both versions will have online play, and most stages in both versions will have "Final Destination" modes that simplify the layout. Nintendo claims the two versions will talk to one another, but it has not revealed exactly how.

The entire Nintendo Direct, which has far more details on the game, can be watched here:

Butt-stomp the moon in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
joystiq.com posted by Joystiq Apr 09 2014 13:00 GMT
- Like?
Borderlands is in the wonderful business of providing goods and guns to insatiable looters. Dubbed the best-selling game in publisher 2K's history, Borderlands 2 refines a gaming bear trap of Diablo-esque questing and shooting, sending up to four friends across the craggy planet of Pandora in search of treasure, weapons and mightier bosses to topple. It's the perfect platform for more, more, more, and Gearbox Software has delivered big and small expansions breathlessly.

Some level of self-awareness has always pervaded Borderland's sense of humor, but the title of the newest game, developed in collaboration between 2K Australia and Gearbox, is the strongest instance of it yet. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! - exclamation and all - is a laughing deflection of whatever criticisms you might have in the quiver. It's not quite as big as Borderlands 2, no. It's not rethinking the franchise. It's the same engine on the same ol' Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It's filling in the backstory between games. But, y'know, it's not like Randy Pitchford's been calling it Borderlands 3! (He hasn't, honest.)

I get the sense that fans are still getting more than the game's pre-emptive modesty implies, and that even a basic plan of "more Borderlands" grew into something slightly more ambitious. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel takes players to the low-gravity environment of the moon and the Hyperion space base that's watched over them on Pandora, and it finally lets them see things (and shoot things) as a short, eccentric robot - Claptrap.
