Greetings from the future. The sun is slowing rising on what is sure to be a beautiful Saturday morning, here in Tokyo. It’s officially the third day of the Tokyo Game Show, and we haven’t missed a beat. PlayStation blew the roof off the Makuhari Messe convention center, with collosal announcements, new hardware and tons of games. The PlayStation booth is sprawling with thousands of eager members of the press and gamers waiting to get their hands on the latest PS3 titles on PlayStation Move, and our favorite portable, the PSP.

With a video interview with devs on the new Devil May Cry, and a in-depth chat with The Last Guardian’s director and designer, Fumito Ueda-san — shot, captured and ready to edit. I ventured off on my next assignment — to capture our mammoth and most impressive showing at the Tokyo Game Show yet.

If you’ve previously played a tennis or ping pong video game, you might have an idea of what it’s like to play Table Tennis in Sports Champions. You might also be wrong :)

We wanted to wrap up Sports Champions Week with Table Tennis, because what might seem to be a very basic game proves itself to be quite complex when you factor in the precision of PlayStation Move.

In this video, producer Jeremy Ray demonstrates how the paddle is replicated in 3 dimensions, X, Y, and X-axis tracking, and also shows off multiplayer and how you too can fend off a robot attack with ping pong balls.

That concludes Sports Champions Week, which will be available in the PlayStation Move bundle this very weekend. If you missed them, please take a look at our Archery, Gladiator Duel, and Disc Golf videos. The final game also includes Bocce and Beach Volleyball.

It's launch day for the PlayStation Move, which could prove to be ... tricky for gamers.

Listen, we know how it is. Day one of any new technobauble brings a sort of gravitational force pulling you towards your nearest retailer, urging you to succumb to the sweet, sweet siren song of "I have it and you don't." If you think we're not fighting its dulcet tones as we write this, you're sadly mistaken.

But there's every chance you don't need the Move right now and can stave off the inevitable a few more weeks or months. Of course, there's an equal chance you need it right now -- and you had no idea. We don't know you, and we can't make this decision on your behalf.

Luckily, you know you, so we're making it our mission to equip you with all the knowledge you need to either fend off the call of the Move or convince yourself buying it was your idea all along. Once you've digested the info past the jump, hop down to the comments and let us know if you'll be picking one up, or share your first impressions if you've already pulled the trigger.

Ape Escape's first foray onto the PS3 is a PlayStation Move game. Ape Escape Fury! Fury! arrives in Japan on December 9, and, like much of the Move launch lineup, it will be budget priced. Perhaps that's a good thing, because I can hardly see Fury! Fury! being fun for too long.

Unlike other entries in the Ape Escape series, the Move title is an on-rails shooter and uses the motion controller to act as both a pointer and virtual net. As you automatically move down a path, you'll collect various monkey power-ups by shooting them. Along the way, you'll also equip a variety of tools, such as a paper fan, to move obstacles out of the way. Eventually, at the end of the path, you'll come to an arena filled with monkeys. Here, you'll attempt to capture the "apes" using the Move as a net.

Sony faux-spokesman Kevin Butler's no stranger to talking smack about competitors -- though, for the life of us, we never expected him to turn his scornful eye upon infant dogs. Check out the US commercial for EyePet after the jump as we await a rebuttal from the dog people of the world.

Announcing a nationwide midnight launch approximately seven hours before midnight? It may seem bizarre, but GameStop did just that, informing us that 440 GameStop stores across the country will be reopening at 10:00 p.m. (local time) to allow customers to purchase a PlayStation Move at 12:01 a.m.

Unfortunately, in announcing these plans so late, it seems GameStop didn't have time to come up with a creative name for the proceedings. Or perhaps the company just wasn't able to secure the rights to "Night Moves" by Bob Seger? Just imagine Kevin Butler, vice president of acoustic covers, performing a rendition on the ukelele in front of a GameStop. It's syngergistic gold!

No, MAG 2.0 isn't the supposed sequel we've seen pop up in at least one retailer's inventory computers. It's version 2.0 of the original game, and it's "less than a month away," according to developer Zipper Interactive's blog. The update looks to pack some pretty big additions -- hence the big two-point-oh.

The previously announced PlayStation Move support headlines a roster of improvements, and will make MAG one of the first "core" titles to implement Sony's motion controller. Zipper is also upping the level cap from 60 to 70, introducing changes to the skill tree designed to give MAG "the deepest character customization and specialization ever found in a first-person shooter," boasts Zipper. Additionally, the update will institute an in-game economy where match winnings can be used to buy new weapons and gear from a "Supply Depot."

Of course, 2.0 will also usher in a host of fixes and tweaks intended to "streamline the overall experience." And if you can believe it, Zipper is teasing that there's even more content in the upcoming patch to be revealed before it goes live. Now we just need to know exactly when that'll be, so we can start shoving aside all personal and professional obligations.

I’ve played disc golf once before, and the course wasn’t anywhere near as nice as the one in Sports Champions.

After the rapid, manic action found in Gladiator Duel, an event like Disc Golf is a fun, relaxing way to wind down. That calmer place doesn’t mean that it doesn’t take full advantage of the PlayStation Move technology, however. Producer Jeremy Ray shows us why Sports Champions presents the best “frolfing” experience you’ve ever seen in a video game.

I particularly like how you’re not going through pre-determined motions – if you want to underhand toss your disc into the goal, you’re free to do it (and it’s a pretty good technique from 20 feet and under).

We wrap up Sports Champions week tomorrow with Table Tennis.

Sports Champions Week continues here on the Blog with the hack ‘n’ slash action of Gladiator Duel. In the Move demonstrations we’ve given at trade shows and Move meetups, Gladiator Duel has been the event that people have gravitated to immediately. And it’s easy to see why – bashing your friends in a head to head battle with one-to-one tracking is pretty awesome. Producer Jeremy Ray walks us through the features:

More than any other Sports Champions event, Gladiator Duel is the one that’s going to get that heart rate up and a bit of a sweat going. Tomorrow we’ll continue Sports Champions week with the comparatively mellow Disc Golf (a personal fave of mine).

As you know, the PlayStation Move will be available this weekend, and to help give you a preview of the fun times ahead, we’ve set up “PlayStation HQ” locations in cities throughout the U.S. so you can get some hands-on time with the games before launch.

I haven’t had a chance to drop by and prop my feet on Kevin Butler’s desk, so I’m planning to rectify that this Friday. Why don’t you join me? I promise to bring along pizza, schwag, and even some PlayStation Move bundles and software to raffle off to those who visit.

4988695068_559339566e.jpg

The cool thing about these venues is, we’re granting hands-on time with some of these Move-enabled games that most people have never tried. Here’s the title list for Friday night’s meet-up:

  • LittleBigPlanet 2
  • Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition
  • The Shoot
  • Time Crisis: Razing Storm
  • Singstar Dance
  • Tumble
  • Sports Champions
  • The Fight: Lights Out

Plan to arrive early, as we only have space for about 200 friends. You can RSVP here.

The details:

Friday, September 17
Location: 658 Market Street, San Francisco
Time: 6 – 9 pm
RSVP: on Facebook

What do you like on your pizza?
Hope to see you there!

PS3's atmospheric adventure game Heavy Rain will receive a free patch on September 22 to support the Move peripheral. The PlayStation Blog notes the patch will download automatically when users start the game, adding actions that "mimic real-world motions" -- like knocking on doors (pictured). For those interested in experiencing this, you'll have to pick up the Move controller on September 19.

The PSN will also add a Heavy Rain Move demo on September 28, featuring two of the early levels in the game. As the update is all about adding Move support, don't expect a pronunciation patch for "ore-A-gammy killer."

If you’re getting yourself a PlayStation Move this week and you want a challenging game that shows off how awesome your new motion controller is, we recommend you look out for Tumble.

In Tumble, you use the motion controller to stack up and knock down blocks. There are over 50 challenges to tackle across single and multiplayer modes. Balance, Solve and Destroy with blocks of all different shapes, sizes, weights and dimensions and reach into the screen like never before.

We’re already starting to get great reviews, and you can try it for yourself by playing the Trial version on your PlayStation Move Demo Disc (which can be found in PlayStation Move peripheral bundles) or downloading it from PlayStation Store.

We’d now like to take you behind the scenes to learn some of the secrets from the development team, Supermassive Games.

The PS Move Is Too Precise?
We think Tumble has the most precise control system ever developed for a game: Every action you make with your motion controller is replicated on-screen perfectly.

We’re very proud of what we achieved, but early in development we had an issue with this amazing technology. The data we were getting from the PS Move was almost too precise; It picked up every tiny movement, every twitch, every overshoot and correction.

A long time was spent just working on how to use the huge amount of data we were getting back from the PS Move, smoothing out the raw data without introducing lag. It wasn’t just about getting 1:1 control; it was about making it feel like 1:1. We’re really happy with the outcome and sure you will be too when you try it out.

Multiplayer Attracts Crowds
There’s something about a massive, unstable, teetering tower of blocks that draws a crowd: People want to see it crashing down.

4976429045_6de8cd0a6a.jpg

To test our multiplayer levels we invited everyone in the studio to have a go on Tumble whenever they liked. The crowds grew as the games got more intense. It made us realize that we had something really compelling with the multiplayer experience; everyone was a backseat driver, everyone wanted to grab the controller and everyone wanted to be the best.

We also added drop-in co-op to all the single player levels. It’s a great feature to play with family or friends, or if you want to complete the Timed medals super fast.

What Hit The Cutting Room Floor?
Right at the start of the project we realised that stacking blocks on its own didn’t offer enough variety for the game, however precise and rewarding it felt.
So we had lots of brainstorming sessions and came up with a huge number of ideas – different materials for the blocks; destruction mode; light puzzles; sloped, rotating and moving platforms; sticky blocks; explosive blocks; anti-gravity blocks; earthquakes; wind generators; see-saws; jigsaw puzzles; sequence puzzles; maths puzzles; home run challenges; timed challenges; target challenges and a whole lot more!

4977041236_5def85bcbe.jpg

And Finally…
Tumble on a 3D TV is incredible: it feels like you’re actually reaching inside the TV. You should definitely give this super intuitive mode a go if you get the chance.

Thanks for stopping by. Go check out Tumble soon and we hope you have as much fun playing it as we had making it.

#buttons Earlier this week, Kevin Butler, Sony's (fake) V.P. o'snark, took a dig at Kinect in the latest TV commercial for PlayStation Move. Now there's an entire site up implying that buttons in motion control result in games that "don't suck." More »

Remember when motion-controlled games were simply for old people and children? (We kid!) However, Nintendo's marketing has rarely reached this level of aggression. Sony has launched a new website -- www.yaybuttons.com -- that plays hardball against Microsoft's button-free Kinect experience. By clicking any of the buttons on the virtual PlayStation Move controller, you'll be able to read through a rant from fictional PlayStation VP Kevin Butler:
"It turns out that buttons are pretty important. Not like "save the whales" important. More like 'not play games that suck' important. Cuz they help you ... control stuff. Controller. Control. Kinda makes sense. Some people don't think you need buttons. WHAT?! Craziness. Could you imagine gaming without buttons? Where would the control come from?"While there's some reason for concern, this kind of marketing can be interpreted not as playful, but a return to the "arrogant" attitude Sony has been notorious for. Considering Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda confirmed future games could use the button-y Xbox 360 controller in conjunction with Kinect, this might be an argument Sony won't want to kick up.
