John Koller, director of hardware marketing for PlayStation, acknowledged to the Wall Street Journal that Microsoft's 8 million shipped Kinect units amount to a "very impressive" figure, though he assured that his company is still "happy where we are in the market" with Move. As of the end of November, Sony had shipped 4.1 million units of its motion controller and believes it has an edge over Microsoft in the race to earn the hard-won affections of the "hardcore" consumer. That's you, right?

"The limitations are such that you can't create all the games you want to do," Koller suggested of Kinect, implying that Microsoft's controller-less technoloy lacks the precision control necessary to support so-called "core" titles -- just what Sony has in mind for Move in the coming months.

The apparent strategy involves "layering on more and more core titles," Koller explained, and there are at least two Sony titles around the corner that fit the bill.

While Move was intended to launch with core support in SOCOM 4, that game's delay to April, coupled with Killzone 3 in late February, means that Sony will have two of its core franchises equipped with Move support in the market within a few months. Microsoft and Kinect? Still zero.

In a recent preview of Killzone 3's Move controls, our own Rany Nelson concluded, "I am now committed to using the Move for my first full playthrough of the game. Not only does its integration seem justified to me, but I'm sold on its improved accuracy and greater sense of immersion over the DualShock controller." Koller and Sony sure hope a lot more of us core-types will be sold, too.

[Thanks, Devin]

That’s a wrap! Together with James from the EU PlayStation.Blog, Jeff, Rey, and I will soon be winding down for the holiday break. But this is no Blog blackout: The PlayStation.Blog will be going strong with fresh new posts helmed by some of the greatest game developers in the world. It starts tomorrow with Guerrilla Games and a unique look Christmas in Amsterdam. Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions will also be spreading a little holiday cheer of their own. And later…well, who knows who else will drop by?

Looking back, 2010 was one hell of a year for PlayStation fans. We got great games like Heavy Rain, God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, MAG, and ModNation Racers; we got sweet new PSN video services such as Hulu Plus, (a disc-free) Netflix, VUDU, MLB.TV, and NHL.TV; we got PlayStation Move in all of its precise glory; we got stereoscopic 3D and Facebook integration and Share and HD PS2 classics and PlayStation Plus and betas and a LittleBigPlanet 2 demo and an UNCHARTED 3 announcement and a Twisted Metal E3 announcement and a bunch of other things I’m probably forgetting (feel free to remind us in the comments!)

Be happy, be healthy, and be good! And be sure to join us in 2011 for one of the wildest PlayStation software lineups of all time. I’m tingling already!

P.S. What was your favorite overall PS3 and PSP game this year?

Earlier this month we announced the PlayStation Move exclusive PSN game Top Darts by Devil’s Details and SCEE XDEV. I’m pleased to announce it is available today exclusively on the PlayStation Store.

As a quick recap, Top Darts is a game that utilizes the PlayStation Move motion controller to give the realistic feeling of throwing darts. It’s a game for all users who have an interest in playing classic games such as 501, Around the Clock and Cricket. Top Darts also has unique games such as Mayhem, Fusewire, Cat and Mouse, Stack Up and many more.

The game allows you to bring a lot of your own personality into the game. For example, you can customize your darts to match your personal style or use the PlayStation Eye camera to customize your avatar and even the dart board. For an interesting effect while playing, you can use the camera to capture video that displays on the dart board during gameplay.

In our previous announcement a lot of you asked how the throw mechanics would be used in the game. Check out the trailer to see more of the game and to get an insight into how the PlayStation Move controller is held and used in the game.

Top Darts is a game for darts enthusiasts and those who hold a casual interest in darts. It has an extensive Single Player League and Cup campaign modes. Up to 8 player local gameplay support in a dozen game modes. Four locales each with a optional unique dart board style. It’s a ton of gameplay that feels great with the Move controller and it’s a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I have enjoyed playing it. And it’s available today for $9.99 exclusively on the PlayStation Store. Happy Holidays everyone.

Relentless' PSN murder mystery puzzle game joins the ever-growing list of games to support the PlayStation Move motion controller. Available now in Europe, and coming soon to America, a new patch will add pointer support to the Blue Toad Murder Files. Sorry, there's no "waggle" support.

To coincide with the holidays and the newly released patch, Relentless is offering a price break on the entire season pass. Episodes 1-6 can be purchased in one bundle for £9.99 / €12.99 / $14.99. That's a pretty good per-episode value, we reckon.

Two months from now, Sony will launch its latest salvo in the first-party, first-person shooter wars, Killzone 3. While we've already taken a look at the game's single-player (in 3D) and multiplayer modes, we've previously only see a brief video demonstration of another one of its bullet-point features: PlayStation Move support.

I spent a good part of the past week playing the latest pre-release version of Killzone 3, examining the ups and downs of using Move (with the companion navigation controller) to do so in place of the standard DualShock 3 controller. After making the initial, somewhat awkward adjustment to literally pointing-and-shooting Helghast troopers, I can say that my experience has ultimately been a positive one.

PlayStation Move owners looking to experience more motion-based gaming might want to consider Modern Combat: Domination, a new online multiplayer shooter -- with Move support -- coming to PSN in January. It's being developed by Gameloft, which probably explains the unfortunately generic name.

There's a brief Gameloft-produced Q&A about the game over on the PlayStation Blog, discussing Domination's map design and some of the other non-Move details. The developer is counting on a "far less expensive" price and a focus on realism to help push it above other first-person shooters on PS3.

In his latest report to the game industry, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter shed some light on the battle between Microsoft's Kinect and Sony's Move motion control systems. Pachter reports that Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles outsold PlayStation Move console bundles in the US by a margin of five to one in November. According to Pachter, "about half" of the Xbox 360 consoles sold in November were part of Kinect bundles, while PlayStation Move bundles made up for "about one fifth" of total PS3 console sales for the month.

With Microsoft reporting 1.37 million Xbox 360s sold in November, that puts the Kinect bundle figure somewhere in the range of 685,000 units, thus putting Move console bundles around 137,000 units. Of course, it's worth pointing out that these figures only refer to console bundle sales and not to individual Kinect and PlayStation Move sales. According to Microsoft, global Kinect sales have topped 2.5 million units. Sony has reported that 4.1 million PlayStation Move units have been shipped to retailers, though the company hasn't disclosed actual sales numbers.

You know how companies like CTA sometimes make crazy accessories that make you go "no way anyone's going to buy that"? Well, it looks like PlayStation Move has allowed Sony to get into that lucrative business itself. The Sharp Shooter attachment for PlayStation Move outdoes the already-released shooting attachment, by transforming your motion controller into a full-fledged plastic rifle, with adjustable shoulder stocks and pump-action.

We got to try the peripheral with Killzone 3, and found aiming to be relatively easy. Shooting with the trigger feels good, and the ability to reload using the built-in pump should make for a fun (albeit cheesy) experience. The placement of the PlayStation face buttons on the side of the controller felt counterintuitive, making things like jumping much, much more difficult. It'll be interesting to see how other Move shooters feel with the odd button layout.

If you need this plastic cradle for your Move controller, you'll have to shell out $40 -- nearly the cost of a Move controller itself! If you'd still rather play with "regular controllers," Sony also announced a new color: Jungle Green, available in February to coincide with the launch of Killzone 3. Check out what it looks like after the break.

Ronimo Games has released a new patch for Swords and Soldiers on the PlayStation Network, bringing PlayStation Move support to the cartoony and entertaining 2D RTS title. Now you can control your little Vikings and Aztecs just by waving your hand -- presuming that your hand is holding one of those Move wands with the glowing ball on top.

The company also tells us that the PC version's release on Steam last week went well and, to celebrate, is making the game available for 20% off the usual price -- just $7.99 after the discount.

Tighten those wrist straps, friends, and prepare to imagine your PlayStation Move controllers into Top Darts, a new PSN release scheduled to launch in time for Christmas. Developed by Devil's Details, the Move-only game features a host of (uh) top darts games, duh, including 501, Around the Clock and Cricket, with support for up to eight players.

Top Darts
also includes single-player League and Cup modes, plus simultaneous multiplayer modes, which do away with the traditional wait-your-darn-turn etiquette, while simultaneously making it safer to throw so many "darts" around the living room at once. Just ... again: Mind those wrist straps!

Hey there, Fight fans. Thanks to those of you who have given us feedback on The Fight: Lights Out since it launched; today we’re bringing you the first update to the game. This update resolves several small issues reported by players and includes the ability to make your fighter transparent in order to get a better view of your opponent.

If that weren’t enough, you will now be able to use all of the boss characters as well as the main man, Duke, to use in both online and offline multiplayer modes as part of the Duke DLC pack.

The patch will soon be available to download when you start up the game and the Duke DLC will be available from PlayStation Store in December.

The Fight: Lights Out is a brand new type of fighting game. It puts your moves and your actions directly into the game, with an unprecedented level of freedom. Your own skill is the only limit.

But as with all great new things, there is, of course, some great new rules and details to learn. Freedom is better when you know what to do with it, so we’ve put together these little bonus tutorials to help everyone get to grips with this wholly new way to play fighting games.

Microsoft's not the only one to achieve some market penetration with its newfangled motion controller contraption -- Sony has announced that in the two months the PlayStation Move has been available in Europe and North America, and the one month the device has been on sale in Japan, the core Move controller has sold 4.1 million units.

Considering the PS3 has sold 41.6 million units to date, that means one out of every ten homes that has Sony's gaming console now also houses a Move. Or, since the Move really works best with a second controller in hand, it could mean that one out of every twenty homes owns two of the devices. Or, perhaps less likely, one out of every thirty PS3-owning families contains three Moves, for their freakish, three-armed children.

Just a few weeks ago, we released Swords & Soldiers for the PlayStation Network, and the response has been overwhelming! The strategic action gameplay is being enjoyed by lots of gamers, offline as well as online. With 3 unique factions, 30 levels of gameplay, customizable skirmishes, 3 highscore arcade challenges and local and online multiplayer modes, there’s lots of game to enjoy.

Now there’s a whole new way to enjoy Swords & Soldiers… because we’ve added PlayStation Move support in our latest patch! Just connect a PlayStation Move to your PlayStation 3 and you will be able to navigate the menus and gameplay using the Move‘s cursor function. You can also mix control schemes on a single PS3 as well as face off against people online with different control schemes. So far we have been unable to find any advantage for one over the other, but if you find any, let us know!

Speaking of balance, we’ve also done a few small tweaks to the balance between the three factions. Most importantly, we’ve made the Vikings slightly stronger in the endgame and the Chinese slightly slower to start. Hopefully now we’ll see some Vikings holding their own near the top spots of the rankings as well!

We’ve also changed the trial version of the game. It now includes a few additional, more challenging levels. So if you haven’t checked out the trial, or felt it was a bit too easy or shallow: check out the new version to get a better taste of what Swords & Soldiers is all about!

As mentioned earlier, the Reverse Course DLC is also now available on the Playstation Store. If you are hungry for more Disc Golf content this is definitely for you. We’ve taken all 18 holes and re-worked them for a fresh new compelling gameplay experience. But it’s much more than just an aesthetic difference of swapping the tees and the baskets – everything about how you play changes. You’ll need to come up with new strategies to master this course – tee shots, obstacles, hazards, where to lay up, shortcuts – basically everything. Check out a couple example holes for a taste of what we mean.
