The Witcher 2 comes out in… 631,800 seconds! (That’s the 17th May to you.) People are excited. Some are too excited. Others still are depressed, because they’ve realised that once it’s released they’ll no longer be able to make every single RPG thread on the internet the home of the tedium of their saying “Witcher 2 will be better,” no matter what is being discussed. But for those struggling to control themselves, there are two new videos of the game below.

#samereleasedateaslanoire Both myself and Jim [Rossignol] have recently been exploring preview code for upcoming dirty fantasy RPG The Witcher 2, which comprised the first two sections of the game. We both found ourselves simpering away like tabloid newspapers at a royal wedding in response to it; we are cynical men by nature, but so far The Witcher 2 has defeated that. Jim's preview is here, but it's well worth distilling our experiences down to some of the game's most impressive aspects. More »

Both myself and Jim have recently been exploring preview code for upcoming low fantasy RPG The Witcher 2, which comprised the first two sections of the game. We both found ourselves simpering away like tabloid newspapers at a royal wedding in response to it; we are cynical men by nature, but so far The Witcher 2 has defeated that. Jim’s preview is here, but it’s well worth distilling our experiences down to some of the game’s most impressive aspects. The Witcher 1 may have been a little bit divisive despite the generally fond sentiment towards it, but right now it’s looking as though the second game is exactly what the starving roleplaying hordes have been praying for. Here’s just a few reasons why – and hopefully the full game holds yet more.(more…)

http://youtu.be/BBEeUo9JpQY?hd=1 After playing several hours of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, I can confidently say the game improves on the original in every way. After seeing this combat video for the game, I realize I've only scratched the surface of what the game has to offer. More »

Not here, I’m afraid – although Jim and I will be pairing up for further discussion about CD Projekt’s new roleplaying opus very soon – but over on Eurogamer, where I’ve dashed out a goodly few words about the first two sections of The Witcher 2. Now, I’m known in some parts (by people who don’t entirely grasp that there are medium-sized numbers in between high numbers and low numbers) as one of the guys who didn’t dig the original Witcher all that much. You’ll find over here that I certainly don’t feel the same way about the second game. E.g. on EG:

A huge step upwards in terms of presentation, writing and roleplaying complexity, The Witcher 2 takes the RPG fight right to the big boys. Assassins of Kings? If the kings are BioWare and Bethesda, that sounds about right.

I really, really, really hope review code’s landing soon. In fact, I just spied a press release claiming the game’s gone gold, so that May 17 release date is in no doubt.

We’ll have much more to say about the Witcher 2 in a short while – I’ve now also played the preview code Jim got all frothy about and can happily confirm that it’s awesome, so we’ll have a good old chinwag about it soon – but in the meantime allow me to point those pretty little eyes of yours at the latest dev diary video. It demonstrates one of the key differences between the first and second game: the fluidity, variance and satisfying crunch of the combat, as opposed to the rather unusual click-timing of the original (don’t say a bloody word, old magazine readers). Geralt’s a stone-cold killer this time around, a flurry of masterful violence pleasing to both the eyes and that mysterious link betwixt gamer’s hand and gamer’s brain.(more…)

That headline is short for “The Witcher 2 Character Development Developer Diary”. Yes. If you’d like to watch some guys from CD Projekt talking you through all the different ways you can develop protagonist Geralt, and all the different ways you can play and he can fight, they’re waiting for you right after the jump.

The Witcher 2 is going to be great. We know this because ever since Jim played the preview build, we here at RPS have had to put up with his near-constant pining for the finished game, which sounds like a cross between a lupine whimper and an Amiga 1200′s boot noise. May 17th can’t come soon enough.(more…)

What follows are impressions of The Witcher 2 based on the limited preview code that Namco and CD Projekt recently released to the press. It’s the prologue and first chapter of the full game, and as such makes up a healthy chunk of play time. People are saying about ten hours, but I think I spent longer than that with it. I’ll avoid specific narrative spoilers, but I won’t be avoiding game-mechanic spoilers. What that means is that I’ll be talking about how the game works, but not that much about what actually happens. This is not a game where you want to know about the surprises.

So let’s take a look at everything else.(more…)

CD Projekt RED's fantasy role-playing game is almost done. With a release date of May 17, it won't be long until you're again hacking stuff to pieces as the white-haired witcher, Geralt. Based on what's been shown off so far, The Witcher 2 looks great. Hopefully that assessment holds true once we get to check out the final game...

The Witcher 2 looks shiny. But how shiny will it be? And will it really take advantage of our big strong PCs? We can find out more with a closer look a the system specs (which I’ve posted below), as well as some lovely new screenshots. I’ve got ‘em all set to click through to hi-res, should you wish to inspect them closely.

It seems The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings will be available through GOG.com alongside its retail debut in May, 2011. Eurogamer reports the news will be made official later today. Both Witcher and GOG are overseen by Polish company CD Projekt, so the convergence doesn't sound, as the people of Mypos would put it, "ridigulous."

CD Projekt's GOG site hosts a number of "Good Old Games" and, when the company isn't performing poorly conceived marketing stunts, its DRM-free download service is focused and fantastic. The Witcher 2 will break new ground on the service by not being old -- let's just cross our fingers that it can at least live up to the other criteria.

Update: CD Projekt has confirmed the game will be available DRM-free on GOG.com, pre-orders available now.

Did you know that The Witcher had three different endings? Seems like par for the course, right? Well, things are getting downright insane in The Witcher 2, which Eurogamer reports will have 16 different attainable outcomes. Here's some other interesting improvements, courtesy of that snazzy new multi-platform engine:
  • There will be 256 cutscenes (totaling 150 minutes) in The Witcher 2, whereas the first game only had 130 cutscenes (totaling 53 minutes)
  • The Witcher 2 will have 30 different armor types to choose from, compared to the five available in the first game
  • You'll only need to suffer through four load screens in the sequel, while the first game forced players to wait during approximately 700
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is slated to launch sometime in 2011.
