The XBLA version of Minecraft received a new skin pack recently, which includes 45 different skins for the game's main character. Among the pack, the second released for the XBLA game, are themed skins from a variety of games, such as Left 4 Dead 2, Castle Crashers, and Gears of War 3. The latest install-at-your-own-risk Minecraft update (snapshot "12w34a") is now available over at the official Mojang blog. Once installed, several fundamental changes are made to the way maps and nether portals function. You'll also get some new items, things to make from said items, and probably the coolest creature ever.

Dubbed the "Wither Boss," this new baddie is a three-headed floating skeleton torso that shoots exploding skulls from each head. It does not appear as though the creature actually exists anywhere in game yet, but the files are all there, waiting to be hacked in if you've got some kind of death wish (as seen in the demonstration video above by Sethbling).

This update also adds potatoes and carrots, the former a reagent for baked potatoes and the latter a key ingredient in invisibility potions, of all things. Splashing the potion will make you and any surrounding mobs invisible, but will not affect your armor or any items you happen to be carrying. Meanwhile, splashing a baked potato on yourself would just be silly.

Well, I suppose it’s not really secret anymore, since today we learn via Mr Hogarty, who is some kind of Minecraft community sentinel these days, that the current version of Minecraft contains a new super-tough mob, the Wither. It seems that the thread-headed aberration, which is super tough and fires bolts which can destroy blocks and “wither” you, is locked up in the code pending a forthcoming version of the game. Needless to say, enterprising Minecraftians have figured out how to spawn it in the game, so you can see it below. The video also summarises a bunch of other stuff from forthcoming Minecraft features like, uh, potplants.(more…)

Mojang, the studio in front of the man behind Minecraft, was working on a first-person shooter with another company, Markus "Notch" Persson tells Joystiq. The collaboration and the project itself is now completely dead, Notch confirms, following yesterday's news of a mysterious cancellation.

The FPS was killed off in the prototype stage, not because it wasn't turning into a good game, but because Mojang "did not want more external dependencies," Notch says. "The success of Minecraft meant we could focus on projects fully owned by us."

Future collaborations aren't out of the question for Mojang, as long as they're "not to make money. If there are other reasons to collaborate, maybe!"

Here's a reason: Portal guns in Minecraft.

Minecraft sales continue unabated. Daniel Kaplan, business developer at Mojang, revealed today that the PC version of Minecraft has exceeded sales of seven million units; comparatively, the Xbox Live Arcade version has sold three million.

The seven millionth sale comes a week after Minecraft's 1.31 patch, which adds trading functionality and combines both single-player and multiplayer into one unified mode.

Let's just skip the "Is that a bone in your pocket?" joke we're all thinking and get straight to business: Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been updated and now includes skeletons, spiders and best of all, a bow to kill skeletons and spiders with. Skeletons and spiders are cool and atmospheric and everything, but they're even cooler when they can't murder you on account of being riddled with hundreds and hundreds of arrows.

The update also fixes around 20 or so known glitches, including one called "burning world," which sounds rather inconvenient. Currently, only the iOS version of Minecraft has these updates listed, though we wouldn't figure that a similar update for the Android version would be far behind.

Minecraft developer Mojang is on track to have a profit of $18 million this year, according to CEO Carl Manneh. MCV Nordic reports (via IT24) that the company had $82 million in sales last year, with Minecraft its only product.

The Minecraft phenomenon keeps chugging along, with the PC's 1.3 update recently released. The Xbox version recently passed three million sales, and is currently selling approximately 17,000 copies daily, along with receiving regular support. Mojang also recently announced that this year's Minecon will take place in Euro Disneyland this November.

Furthering the notion that developers just love the Oculus Rift, Minecraft maestro Markus "Notch" Persson has revealed his excitement for the device. Taking to Twitter, Notch stated he is "very excited" for the device and "can't wait to start playing with it."

Furthermore, he's already promised that his upcoming project, 0x10c, will support the device so long as it works with Java. Finally, he's interested in seeing Minecraft feature Rift support, though the decision will come down to Minecraft's current lead designer, Jens Bergensten.

For our part, we're hoping Minecraft never supports the device. Creepers are scary enough when they're not coming right at you.

I’d forgotten that Minecraft can be terrifying. It wasn’t until I was leading a conga line of zombies through a dark forest, hunger stinging me, dehydration stabbing away, that I remembered the fear it can instil. I say “remembered”, like I rationalised it. “Ah, yes. This feels familiar”. Really, I was screaming and swearing and panicking and clenching. Following the success of Minecon in Las Vegas last year, the latest, greatest gathering of block lovers will take place in Europe, at Disneyland Paris. I went there once. Dragged along as surly teenager by my over-keen family. The highlight of my trip was our daily visit to the theme-hotel restaurant, whose chalkboard proudly proclaimed an offering of “Barbecued Children.” The French-speaking staff refused to understand the humour in their error, leading me and mum to speculate that it might not have been an error at all. It was Disneyland, after all.

Where on Earth can you hang out with such adorable pop culture icons as Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Markus "Notch" Persson? Only at Disneyland Paris during MineCon 2012. Mojang will hold the annual Minecraft convention at the theme park November 24 and 25, a definite step up from last year's Las Vegas location, though it does complicate travel plans for those of us not in the same continent as Disneyland Paris.

Mojang will open up registration for tickets and accommodation "soon." Start stapling plastic mouse ears onto your favorite fedora now.

Ready to get your virtual trade on with virtual people in virtual villages? Minecraft's latest update is here to enable that - the "1.3.1" patch - and it's got more than just value-less trading. It's also got ... uh ... the Ender Chest? Sure! And, uh, writeable books! Yeah!

Oh, right, it also combines single-player and multiplayer modes into one, unified mode. Well then! Anyway, that's totally out now for your PC users. For a full list of patch notes, head past the break.

They’re also adding a demo mode, that lets non-registered users play for five days per world in singleplayer, thre’s trading, a better inventory for Creative mode, tweaked how experience is distributed, added the ability to write 50 page books, more buildings for jungles and deserts, and included new blocks based around Emerald, pan-dimensional Ender Chests, a tripwire, and just so many more tweaks and fixes.

Minecraft mastermind Markus Persson, better known by the sexually ambiguous alias "Notch," has cleared up the matter of gender in Minecraft's boxy world with a blog post. Simply put, there is no gender in the game, even for Steve, the default character. "He" got "his" title when Notch jokingly answered a question regarding the main avatar's name with "Steve?"

"The human model is intended to represent a Human Being. Not a male Human Being or a female Human Being, but simply a Human Being," Notch writes.

"The blocky shape gives it a bit of a traditional masculine look, but adding a separate female mesh would just make it worse by having one specific model for female Human Beings and male ones. That would force players to make a decisions about gender in a game where gender doesn't even exist."

Notch touched on this subject at GDC, during his fireside chat with SpyParty's Chris Hecker. Making a female character model wouldn't only be strange-looking, as Notch said then, but it would be completely unnecessary in a genderless world. Even the animals are neutral (rather than neutered).

"Cows have horns and udders (even if I've later learned that there are some cows where the females do have horns), and the chicken/duck/whatevers have heads that look like roosters, but still lay eggs," Notch writes. "For breeding, any animal can breed with any other animal of the same species."

Notch notes that this particular post serves only to provide official clarification on gender questions in Minecraft. Oh, also: "As a fun side fact, it means every character and animal in Minecraft is homosexual because there's only one gender to choose from. Take THAT, homophobes!"

What's that you say? You love Minecraft's neo-retro styling but wish it flexed more of your super-expensive gaming PC's copious muscle? Well, first of all, you need to speak up; it's very difficult to hear someone through the Internet. Secondly, Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders mod for Minecraft is exactly what you're looking for.

As seen above, the mod adds dynamic shading effects as well as more realistic movement to vegetation and fire, and best of all, hyper-pretty transparent water cubes. While not yet fully optimized, the latest build of the mod is available here. Sonic Ether warns on his Facebook page that the mod is not bug free and should be used with caution. Conversely, older, more stable versions of the mod can be found here.
