It’s been a funny week for leaks and attacks. Deus Ex Human Revolution’s website getting hacked (which does seem a bit like Thief 4′s website getting stolen), an MP leaking a game announcement (which is my favourite embargo break ever – presumably Creative Assembly will be punishing Vaizey by refusing to give him preview code), and then the rather astonishing complete spoil-fest of not only huge amounts of content for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, but even that Modern Warfare 3 exists. Activision and Infinity Ward have sprung into action and created four teaser trailers that confirm it all for themselves. You can watch them below.

#callofduty You've had your first unofficial look at this year's Call of Duty, now let's see what the official unveiling of Modern Warfare 3 looks like in this brief, but now familiar teaser trailer, "America Under Siege." More »

Just hours after new details on the game came to light, Activision has launched the first of likely many teaser trailers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 via Facebook. Subtitled "America Under Siege," the all-too-brief clip drives home the fact that a focus of the modern combat occurring in this installment will be the USA's own front lawn.

Enough explaining -- you can watch the 30 second video (reminiscent of the one used to debut Modern Warfare 2 in 2009) after the break, after which we're sure you'll have all sorts of plot theories to share in comments. Make us proud!

#callofduty What to make of the Modern Warfare 3 leak? Robert Bowling, creative strategist at Modern Warfare studio Infinity Ward said on Twitter today that 'some' of the information in the trove of images, level summaries and audio files, "still accurate," but suggests that other details have changed, presumably during the course of the game's development. Stuff's gonna blow up in MW3. A lot of it.

We knew another Call of Duty was coming, we figured it was going to be Modern Warfare 3, but Kotaku reported a trove of details about the alleged project today, an information dump about the collaboration between Infinity Ward, Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games.

Infinity Ward has since acknowledged the leak occurred, though said details are inaccurate.

"A lot of hype & a lot of leaked info on #MW3, some still accurate, some not," tweeted Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling. "To avoid spoiling the experience, I'd wait for the real reveal."

Kotaku's reporting on Modern Warfare 3 goes deep into spoiler territory, as the headline suggests. I'm not going to lay those details out here. If you'd like to know more about the storyline, including details about who lives and who dies, I'll point you in their direction. I'll be sticking to the broad strokes here.

Like the other Modern Warfare games, Modern Warfare 3 will reportedly take players around the world for a 15-mission campaign, picking up immediately after the cliffhanger from Modern Warfare 2. The game opens with New York City under full assault, takes players to Paris, London and other notable locales under siege in what appears to be World War III, and concludes in--well, I won't say.

Multiplayer will, naturally, play an important role in the sequel, especially expanding the popular Spec Ops mode. Spec Ops will allegedly include both "Mission" and "Survival" modes. The number of traditional multiplayer maps is pegged at around 20, but that could easily change by November.

There's not much that's a surprise here. The surprise is that so much managed to leak before E3, where it's looking like Activision was prepared to finally bring Modern Warfare 3 into the spotlight.

What happens when a large contingency of a series' creative team packs up, and two additional teams are brought on to round out the production? Apparently, you get a lot of loose lips. Details of Modern Warfare 3, what is almost sure to be the biggest game of the year, have been leaked with an unusual amount of specificity to Kotaku less than a month before its presumed big reveal at E3.

A lot of that specificity is wasted on spoilers which, in addition to being generally unwanted for those of us who haven't played the game, are about a Call of Duty title meaning they follow multiple characters through multiple elaborate setpieces. Oh, and there's shooting. MW3 begins right where MW2 left off: with the US trying to prevent a Russian invasion. Your roles include a "Russian Federal Protective Services agent, SAS Operative, tank gunner, and AC-130 gunner" as well as some old friends from previous MW games and some new characters, notably "Frost" and "Sandman."

About those setpieces! Modern Warfare 3 will reportedly include 15 missions that take place across "a dozen cities around the world including New York, Paris and London." If some of that selection sounds familiar, that's because this fall's Battlefield 3 will find itself in "Paris, Tehran and New York." Awkward.

But it's not just Manhattan, it's also Brooklyn, Mogadishu, and more, if the list of 20 multiplayer maps is to be believed. (It's unclear if these include maps from the inevitable DLC map packs.) Spec Ops is back as well, with the mission-based co-operative offerings from Modern Warfare 2 accompanied by a new "Survival" mode or, as you're more likely to know it by, Horde mode. The goal: You and your pals will defend yourselves from increasingly difficult waves of enemies. There are seven "Mission" maps and five "Survival" maps listed.

Previous Modern Warfare installments were so shrouded in secrecy, nearly up until the time of release, that it's hard to imagine how such a massive, seemingly coordinated leak took place.

Two years ago, Infinity Ward used the Game Developer's Conference Awards show to unveil the trailer (and date!) for its hugely anticipated followup, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. If we're reading the signals right, it's looking to use the conference for the reveal of the third installment (Modern Warfare 3?), a game that's been shrouded in mystery following the developer's very public (and very ugly!) executive departures.

Someone sent over a pair of dog tags, pictured above, that include a link to findmakarov.com, with the totally-a-tag-line "End the War" stamped above it. The site includes a countdown which takes us to 10pm ET next Tuesday, March 1. The other dog tag belongs to - gross, a dead guy! - Lt. General Shepherd, MW2's main bad dude, who evidently has a birthdate of ... next Tuesday? Wait, that's not right ...

The site's whois information has been anonymized, and we're busy trying to confirm the validity of the tags with Activision. The GDC Awards take place on Wednesday night this year and, glancing at our packed GDC calendar for next week, Tuesday night belongs to EA's competing Battlefield 3. So either Activision wants to steal some of their thunder, or this is a comically elaborate ruse on EA's part.

The return address indicates Toronto-based "viral marketers" VVO Media are behind the mailing and, with a slim portfolio, it's tough to say who they're working for. Oh viral marketing, how we grow tired of you.

Surprise! I’ve just broken into your house and stolen all your milk. No, that’s not the real surprise. The real surprise is that there’s going to be another Call of Duty game this year. No, that’s not a surprise either. The real surprise is that it sounds like we might see a bit of said game at GDC next week. At least, that’s according to a new web intersite called FindMakarov. Makarov is, you may recall, one of the baddies in Modern Warfare 2, as well as That Guy, Him and Wossiface. (more…)
