Many, many people have already picked up copies of this year's Call of Duty entry, Modern Warfare 3. This we know. But what about those of you hoping against logic that the game -- one of the fastest selling media properties of all time -- would drop its price relatively close to launch? Bizarrely, your time has come, with Amazon offering Modern Warfare 3 for $50 (10 percent off) across Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, today only.

In fact, the entire stable of Call of Duty titles are on sale (not to mention various DS and Wii iterations) going all the way back to Modern Warfare 1. Amazon promises a day of Assassin's Creed savings tomorrow, so perhaps holding off on a purchase of Revelations this afternoon would be a smart move.

Activision announced today that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has earned one billion dollars in its first sixteen days on sale. This beats the record of James Cameron's film Avatar, which crossed the billion dollar mark in seventeen days back in 2010...

As Bobby Kotick nestles himself between a cloud masquerading as a mattress and a gold-trimmed white goose down duvet (the goose has the gold trim, not the duvet), his mind can gently waft into unconsciousness, accompanied by the pleasing crackle of bloggers typing "one billion dollars." Activision announced the enormous sales figure for Modern Warfare 3 this morning, claiming the milestone flew by within 16 days of the game's launch. We hope George Michael was adequately rewarded for providing his flattest cover yet.

The information is derived from retailer sell-through data and the UK's Chart-Track service, and is positioned in comparison to entertainment nemesis Hollywood, where 2009's Avatar took longer to reach the same sales (19 in total if you ask Wikipedia). James Cameron's 3D spectacle rested on an awful lot of noses and eventually reached $2 billion worldwide.

Alas, that's an indication of Modern Warfare 3's diminishing returns in the news sphere. Next year, we want to see two billion bucks before we commit a sentence.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, with a slight sales gain of 2 percent, remains king of the hill for a fourth week in a row on Chart-Track's UK sales chart. Stalwart chart champion FIFA 12 pushed past Assassin's Creed: Revelations into second, but remained 55,000 units behind Modern Warfare 3.

The big mover and shaker last week was Just Dance 3, up 54 percent, electric-sliding from eighth into fourth. Skyrim and Saints Row: The Third couldn't help but shout and inspire mayhem regarding this situation while sitting in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Mario Kart 7 was the only top 40 debut on the charts last week, driving up to an eighth place finish.

Mamma mia! Here we go again. There were two titles that entered the top 40 in their second week. ABBA: You Can Dance (part of the Just Dance franchise) saw a 252 percent jump in sales into 30th place. Zumba Fitness 2, the sister succubi of a formerly unstoppable chart demon, is up 97 percent and creeps into the 34th spot. Check out the UK top ten after the break.

From Dec. 2 to Dec. 16, sales of all Modern Warfare 3 avatars from the Xbox Marketplace will benefit real-world soldiers returning from war via Activision's Call of Duty Endowment. Proceeds from avatar sales will go directly to help veterans transition from service to civilian life through the Endowment. Activision has released two new MW3 avatars for the event, the Special Ops Juggernaut and American Special Forces.

Check out the online avatars that can help troops IRL on the Xbox Marketplace.

Now that Elite is up and running, Activision has seen fit to remind us of what the exact perks are for signing up for Call of Duty Elite with the above trailer. It's also got tons of sweeping shots of dudes holding guns, if that's more your thing.

#callofduty So, getting Call of Duty Elite functional has been a struggle for Activision. The publisher's promising that the social platform built for their best-selling FPS franchise will finally be mostly functional this week. The mega-publisher's turned out a trailer to celebrate this occasion. In the clip, you'll see an overview of Elite's basic functionality as well as an upsell to entice folks to grab the premium package. I'm guessing that the one million people who've already paid for the highest level of the service won't take too kindly to further service hiccups so Activision better deliver on the whole "Play Better Together" thing. Last Wednesday Kotaku republished (with permission, of course) my review of Modern Warfare 3′s single player campaign. A review in which I described it as an “un-game with a core of nastiness”. This caught the attention of Kill Screen’s Brendan Keogh, who wrote a riposte to my piece on the Australian K, in which he called me, in the nicest possible way, an “un-player”, and detailed why he believed my article was incorrect. He perhaps slightly misunderstood, so here is my reply.

Dear Brendan,

Indeed, I don’t think we’ve talked, but I’m sure you’re super-lovely. High five! Also, I agree that I’m endlessly awesome! But let’s not get distracted. To the matter in hand. I’m not sure you really noticed what I wrote in my review, and thus have failed to get to grips with why I am criticising the game. Let me explain again exactly what is wrong with it, and why I believe you are, in this instance, being un-critical.

Grain-of-salt territory here, but rumors have it that Modern Warfare 3's first set of premium downloadable content will feature five maps entitled "Morning Wood," "Concrete," "Park," "Italy," and "Overwatch." The title of the first, and the fact "Overwatch" was a map in Modern Warfare 2, calls for some healthy skepticism. Modern Prestige has what it says are screenshots showing the names of the five maps in question. [h/t Dan Borenstein] More »

When we last spoke with Call of Duty VP of Production Daniel Suarez two weeks ago, just after the record-breaking launch of Modern Warfare 3, things weren't going so well. Sure, MW3 sold 6.5 million units in a single day, but Activision's high-profile Call of Duty Elite service fell squarely on its face. Now, two weeks later, Elite is operational and Suarez says Activision is confident the service can withstand not only the Thanksgiving holiday but a potential post-Black Friday surge.

"It was a lot of hard work from where we were two weeks ago, which was an embarassing place," Suarez confessed. "And now we're at a place where we're confidant people will be able to enjoy the service." And while Elite is operational or, as Suarez put it, "up on its feet," the team continues to push out new builds almost daily. "We still have some bugs and some kinks to work out," he said. "We've been pushing out fixes everyday to address people on Twitter" and elsewhere.

While Activision scrambles to repair Call of Duty Elite, it seems more and more users are piling onto the beleaguered service. The company today announced that the service managed to acquire four million registrations in its first six days of (sort of) operation. What's more, one million of those are paid memberships, leading us to ponder how much $49.99 times 1 million is. Our math skills are rusty, but we're fairly certain the number is pretty big. Furthermore, Activision also revealed that the service has seen more than one million daily logins, and users have already created over 80,000 clans and uploaded more than 100,000 videos.

In other news, Activision issued a correction on Modern Warfare 3's day one player numbers. The company previously announced that the FPS juggernaut pulled in 3.3 million simultaneous players on launch day, November 8. Turns out the real number is under half of that at 1.4 million. There were, however, 3.3 million unique games played on launch day. That's still pretty good, we suppose.
