Want to see what the LittleBigPlanet 2 community has gotten up to using the beta's partial toolset? The trailer posted below includes footage of some of the most brilliant levels uploaded so far. Sadly, none of our submissions made the cut -- probably due to their nightmarish, phallic nature.

Starting yesterday, game journalists began posting their final reviews of LittleBigPlanet 2. So far, the reactions have been fantastic! Gaming web sites have given LBP2 extremely high marks and flattering compliments, including IGN (9/10, Editor’s Choice), Game Informer (9.5/10), 1UP (A-), GamePro (5/5), Joystiq (5/5), WIRED Geek Dad (no score, just plenty of praise), and MTV Multiplayer (ditto)—just to name a few!

With so much excitement swirling around LittleBigPlanet 2’s January 18th release exclusively on the PS3, we also wanted to share a new trailer highlighting the many adventures Sackboy will face. Check it out above!

And here are a few choice quotes to give you a sense of what the gaming press is saying about Media Molecule’s latest game.

“With this sequel, Media Molecule gives players a bottomless toybox, and I can’t remember the last time a game had such a relentless grip on my imagination.”Game Informer

“There were moments where I was giddy over how fun it was, so the fact that you have complete access to these newfound creation abilities is impressive to say the least.”IGN

“LBP2 has improved its creation tools in just about every way. Now it’s possible not only to create objects and backgrounds but to make entirely new control schemes.”1UP

“There’s just no good reason whatsoever not to dive in and explore the many wild worlds of LittleBigPlanet 2.”GamePro

“The original LittleBigPlanet was a thing of genius. From beginning to end, the game continually impressed, and yet, somehow, LittleBigPlanet 2 manages to improve upon it.”MTV Multiplayer

Whether you fell wildly, profoundly in love with the original LittleBigPlanet, or whether you were turned off by its occasionally imprecise controls -- a foible which spells certain doom for platformers -- it's hard to deny that Media Molecule created something magical. Not only was it charming from toe to tip, it placed an unprecedented amount of attention on user-generated content. The most fervent, active members of its community understood the true joy of the game came not from being its player but, rather, its author. In other words, the creation tools weren't a compliment to the game: They were the main course.

However, even though some of the creations whipped up by LBP's master architects had convinced me otherwise, the game's tools couldn't be used to make everything. Media Molecule was clearly counting on this element of surprise when it came time to one-up the title. At GDC last year, studio co-founder Alex Evans quoted Henry Ford, saying, "If I asked them what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse. But I gave them a car."

Even in the half-joking manner in which the quote was used, I thought citing one of the grandfathers of automotive innovation seemed like hubris when coming from a video game developer. Now that I have the unimaginably expanded tools of LittleBigPlanet 2 at my disposal, I'm convinced that I was dead, dead wrong.

Operating systems aren't particularly the most exciting things to play. But when they're recreated within the confines of the LittleBigPlanet 2 creation tools, we take notice. "Windows LBP Edition" won't replace your copy of Windows XP, but it's a heck of a lot cuter.

As 2010 comes to a close, we’re sprinting to the finish line to one of our biggest releases of the year. With splendid news of Media Molecule going gold, our first review being a 10 out of 10, and the LittleBigPlanet 2 demo being downloaded faster than Sackboy strapped to a F-14 fighter, this is truly the start of “Endless Fun.”

“Endless Fun”
LittleBigPlanet 2 has so much to offer that it’s tough to contain it in just one trailer. Fortunately with a few crafty people and some help of a few fans…

Now that 2010 is drawing to close, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our fantastic community members, as well as all of our friends in the media who continue to support LittleBigPlanet. We’re now less than a month away from our January 18th release and I’m thrilled to report that LittleBigPlanet 2 has now ‘gone gold,’ meaning the game is 100% finished! The wait is nearly over and as you might imagine the folks at Media Molecule are extremely excited.

New Storyline Trailer!
I’m sure you’ve seen all of the videos for LittleBigPlanet 2 and enjoyed learning about all of the new gameplay elements in the game. Well, we have another great trailer for you, especially for those fans out there who fell in love with Sackboy’s adventure, the cast of characters, and the world of the first LittleBigPlanet. Check it out above.

First Review!
The next piece of good news is that LittleBigPlanet 2 reviews are starting to come in. Online reviews won’t be posted until after the new year, but print magazine impressions will trickle in over the next few weeks and that started this week with our first worldwide review from the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine — an impressive 10 out of 10! Here are a few choice quotes…

“Full of simple-to-grasp tools, all with huge potential—and you could easily lose more time to LBP2 than any other game released in 2011.”

“Never going to build anything at all? This is still an indispensible package, rammed with creative potential and imaginative gameplay.”

Free Demo Today!
Don’t forget that the LittleBigPlanet 2 Story Mode Demo will be available on the PlayStation Store later today. Here’s your chance to experience a few of the new gameplay additions, like the Grapple Hook and Sackbots, and also meet some of the new characters who will be joining you on your epic Sack-quest.

We've seen LittleBigPlanet 2's vast suite of level creation tools being used to create some pretty remarkable stuff -- it should come as no surprise that Media Molecule has used it to create what looks to be a pretty epic adventure. Check out the new "Storyline" featurette after the jump.

Though the untold millions of new levels which the LittleBigPlanet community will almost certainly churn out have yet to be created, the sequel to Media Molecule's 2008 platformer is completely in the bag. The developer has announced that LittleBigPlanet 2 has gone gold, revealing that the DIY title will arrive in Continental Europe on January 19, followed by its release in Australia and New Zealand the following day and in the UK and Ireland that Friday, January 21. These dates coincide with the North American launch date on January 18, which is great, because the more pedestrians we have making levels for us, the merrier.

If you're finding it difficult to wrap your brain meat around the month standing between you and Sackboy's next outing, you'll be relieved to learn that a demo for the game is set to launch today on the North American PlayStation Store and tomorrow following the European PSN update. Get your creative caps on, everybody! Also, your creative pants.

Even though we should be totally used to seeing insane feats of game design in LittleBigPlanet 2, we're still amazed by this Marvel vs. Capcom-style fighting game created by beta player "POLLOIZARRARAZ43." The stage, inspired by Resident Evil's Umbrella Mansion, is awesome, and introduced with dramatic camera movement, and the game's existing Marvel costumes are put to great use to create a character lineup.

But neither of those features is the best part. The best part is how, after all this buildup, the round starts and it instantly devolves into a rapid-fire Sackboy slap fight -- punctuated by impressive special moves. Really!
