Mortal Kombat, the latest gory fighter from the folks at NetherRealm Studios, was one of the many games affected by the long PSN outage. The competitive, online component of Mortal Kombat is governed by an online pass, which comes packaged with new copies of the game (or can be purchased from the PlayStation Store). Users must enter this "Kombat Pass" in order to play online, which is currently impossible with the PlayStation Store down...

The PlayStation 3 version of Mortal Kombat is seeing the end of an irksome TECHNICALITY: the "Kombat Pass," a token that is required for online play but cannot be redeemed while the PlayStation Store is offline, is being temporarily waived. Up until now, the pool of online combatants was limited to those who hastily activated their passes right before the PSN fell into a coma in late April.

Writing on Mortal Kombat's official Facebook page, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the game's online component should now be unlocked for all players, though it'll be cordoned off as soon as Sony re-opens the PlayStation Store (possibly by next week). The Kombat Pass code is included with all new copies of Mortal Kombat, and can be purchased separately for $9.99 once a free trial period expires.

If you own a used copy of NetherRealm's well-received revamp, you now have an entire weekend to gauge the value of pulverizing pelvises over the internet.

During TNT, we had to enable the two-day temporary access to Mortal Kombat's multiplayer. With the PlayStation Store still down, if you didn't register your "Kombat Pass" prior to the great PSN crash of 2011, you're screwed.

Fortunately, Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios have heard your cries. The companies announced on Facebook that the Kombat Pass is being temporarily waived.

"Due to the recent PSN outage," reads the statement, at nearly celebratory likes, "Mortal Kombat for PS3 will now be playable online without need for the Kombat Pass. This is a temporary solution that will only be available while Playstation Store is unavailable. Once PlayStation Store is back up, users will be able to enter the Kombat Pass code included with Mortal Kombat or purchase a Kombat Pass for $9.99."

Sony's told developers the PlayStation Store should be back next week, so it's rather nice of everyone involved with Mortal Kombat to cut PlayStation players a break while Sony irons out the last kinks.

I'd also like to point out the incredible restraint it took to not drop random k's around this article.

wait, you have to pay 10 bucks to play MK online (if you buy it used)?

Until PlayStation Store returns, Warner Bros. has suspended the "Kombat Pass," the one-use code (included free in retail copies) that enables online play for Mortal Kombat. That means anyone with a copy of the game, used or new, can play online for free. However, when PlayStation Store comes online, "users will be able to enter the Kombat Pass code included with Mortal Kombat or purchase a Kombat Pass for $9.99." As the service is expected to return on Tuesday, this means anyone who buys a used copy of the game now gets a free weekend of online play, more or less. Yippee. More »

You'll have access to the ol 'store soon enough.

Even though PlayStation Network is back, issues remain. Namely, PlayStation Store remains offline. Didn't download your multiplayer access pass for Mortal Kombat before PSN went down? You're out of luck. Already blew through every case in L.A. Noire and looking for more? Sorry.

I have good news to report, though.

PlayStation Store returns next week, with multiple updates, just as promised. The information comes from a letter Sony is sending its content partners--and then passed onto me.

"We thank you for your patience as we work to resume service of the PlayStation Store," reads the letter. "In anticipation of the store's reactivation, we have a tentative publish schedule we would like to share with you as it affects content that had been originally scheduled for release [when PSN was down]."

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.

The letter also details the schedule for continuous updates: May 24, May 27, May 31 and June 3. It's unclear whether the multiple updates will continue past June 3.

As of next week, PlayStation Store will have been down for a month. That's four weeks worth of scheduled content, promotions, and sales that never appeared. There's plenty for Sony to catch up on.

The first Mortal Kombat DLC will be released "certainly within the next month," according to Mortal Kombat chief Ed Boon, though it could be as soon as "the next few weeks." The DLC will introduce the sword-wielding Skarlet to an already-substantial MK roster. Like many of Mortal Kombat's kombatants, Skarlet's nativity was a palette-swapping glitch in Mortal Kombat II, which turned Kitana a deadly shade of red...

Mortal Kombat, slicin' up the competition.

Salesality.

Is that word? Did it have to be done? No.

But what it represents is true: Mortal Kombat dominated the charts in April, selling 900,000 copies across both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, according to the latest data released by the NPD Group. Portal 2, which also had a PC and Mac release, came up a close second, but sales data wasn't released. Less than 900K, obviously!

SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals did not chart in the top ten in April, but that's because NPD did not combine the sales of the regular $59.99 game and the more expensive PlayStation Move bundle. Had the two numbers been combined, NPD noted, SOCOM 4 would have broken into the top ten list.

Here are the top ten games for the month:

Mortal KombatPortal 2Lego Star Wars III: Clone WarsCall of Duty: Black OpsTiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The MastersCrysis 2Just Dance 2Michael Jackson: The ExperiencePokemon WhiteNBA 2K11

In terms of hardware, Microsoft came out on top, pushing 297,000 units. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PSP all say year-over-year sales improvements from April 2010, while Nintendo's Wii did not. An upcoming price drive to $150, however, should spur Wii into more hands, as Nintendo prepares to transition hardware.

It'll be a good day to die online this summer, when Warner Bros. delivers the Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection for Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC. It's a collection in the truest sense, too, bundling Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

The best part? It's only $9.99.

No, wait, the bestest part? All three will feature online play and leaderboards.

Yes, that's a tear running down my face.

The best part? It's only $9.99.

Yes, that's a tear running down my face.

Granted, some of you may have already downloaded previous updates of some of these titles, as UMK3 once had a stand-alone downloadable version exclusively available on Xbox Live, and MK II was available on PSN. However, both those titles were removed from their respective stores when Warner Bros. purchased the rights to the Mortal Kombat brand from Midway, so if you know what's good for you, you'll just forget you ever bought either of those versions and smile and nod to this announcement as if it were the first time any of these games were made available via a digital distribution network. Otherwise, Warner Bros. will cut you. Deep.

In celebration of this new kollection of fighters, PDP has designed a special version of their Mortal Kombat Fight Stick with a new button layout keyed to the design of the old games. The stick will be sold exclusively through GameStop, and retail for $129.99. Those who pre-order the sticks will receive a download code for the game when it releases.

While Mortal Kombat was, for all intents and purposes, the first three MK games smooshed together into one awesomely revamped package--certainly a far better effort than Mortal Kombat Trilogy was--one cannot help but be super excited by the notion playing all three of these arcade klassics online for a fairly low price. What say you, MK fans? You looking forward to a constant state of confusion as you feebly try to recall what fatality goes with which version of Sub-Zero?

(Alex Navarro also contributed to this story, because Patrick totally ganked it out from under him like a dirty ganker of Mortal Kombat stories. That sonuva...)

We've heard over and over again about the plight of the PlayStation 3 user in the weeks since the PlayStation Network was unceremoniously taken away from us. We have heard the screams of rage directed at the online brigands who robbed them of the ability to enjoy Mortal Kombat multiplayer and peruse PlayStation Store updates, their cries piercing the still air of the Internet's endless night like a mother whose child has been stolen by gypsies.

Svensson, presumably in happier times. But what of the true victims in all of this? What of the peasant publishers, who rely upon Sony's online fiefdom for their daily bread and plague medicines? Well, they're pretty pissed off too, if this missive from Capcom VP Christian "Sven" Svensson is any indication.

Speaking on the Capcom forums, Svensson replied to a user who asked about the company's stance on the matter. While he avoided taking a super-duper official company stance, Svenson expressed his own frustration and anger over the outage.

As a consumer, I also play games online on PS3, which I can't do... and likely my personal information is also compromised. Secondly I like to buy things in the PlayStation store and that I can't do right now.

As for the ramifications of such an outage for the publisher's financials, Svensson minced few words.

On a related note, as an executive responsible for running a business, the resulting outage obviously costing us hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in revenue that were planned for within our budget. These are funds we rely on to bring new games to market for our fans.

It's something that's been alluded to by other developers and publishers since the outage's first week, but up until now, no one's put quite such a definitive stamp on exactly how badly this is messing with everyone else's bottom line. And while it's certainly been easy for people to express frustration at Sony directly over their handling of the PSN situation, Svensson made it clear that the hackers responsible for the original breach are ultimately the ones that have drawn his ire.

In short, the hackers appear to be trying to "punish" Sony for some perceived injustice, and they've been effective in that I suppose. But they're also punishing millions of other consumers and businesses which makes it impossible to be sympathetic to their "cause".

As much as folks have blamed consoles for errording the influence of PC games (which, nipping your comments in the bud, clearly isn't true), console players have become accustomed to regular patches.

Mortal Kombat will be on the receiving end of a patch soon, according to a statement released to the official Mortal Kombat boards. News of a patch isn't surprising, considering the patch is meant to address some serious issues players have had with had with King of the Hill and 1v1 ranked matches.

"Thank you for supporting Mortal Kombat! Due to the overwhelmingly positive reception to the game, Mortal Kombat has millions of online matches being initiated worldwide every day, and we have run into some unanticipated technical issues. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios are aware of the issues with the online gameplay – specifically with 'King of the Hill' and Ranked 1 v. 1 matches - and we want to assure our fans that we are focused on resolving online issues ASAP. We have added a 'Technical Issues' section to our forum so please be sure to let us know what issues you are having so we can address those as soon as possible. Users will begin seeing improvements in online play over the course of the next two weeks. In the meantime please note that none of this will impact the single-player or offline multiplayer experience, and we greatly appreciate your patience!"

 What's been your experience online?
