NetherRealm Studio's pallet-swap parade continues to march through blood-splattered streets, as July 5 marks the introduction of another set of complimentary Klassic Kostumes for Mortal Kombat's two most gray-scale-iest fighters.

Included in the fighter's forthcoming Compatibility Pack 2, designed to make systems ready for the Kenshi DLC dropping the same day, these costumes allow Noob Saibot and Smoke to join in with the rest of the ninja clan's retro reindeer games. With at least two more DLC characters due this year, and with all the ninjas now tastefully dressed, it's unclear whether or not free costumes will continue to be the norm when system updates come to town. For now though, enjoying murdering hundreds of people in a slightly different outfit.

If there's one thing Mortal Kombat has been missing, it's a blind swordsman that uses ghosts to murder people. Thankfully, series-semi-veteran Kenshi will be arriving July 5 to fill that void in our violent little hearts. Check out his ultra-bloody debut trailer after the jump.

The first downloadable combatant to join the fray in Mortal Kombat, Skarlet is one part ferocious warrior, one part porn star. As GameSpy Executive Editor Ryan Scott said, Skarlet's Fatalities are elaborate, bloody porno moves. It was hard to believe at first, but after seeing "Blood Bath" and "Make It Rain," I'd say Shao Kahn created a real sadist when he crafted Skarlet. But we'll get to that later...

It looks like Skarlet's bloody journey into Mortal Kombat has been a tough one. Downloading the new fighter has been tricky for European PS3 users, specifically because Skarlet was never actually added to the PlayStation Store. Rather than Skarlet, the latest update featured a new costume pack -- which was listed at nearly twice the price of the same pack in the US.

Warner Bros. has responded to the issue on Twitter, stating that "some technical issues" caused the problem and that Skarlet will not be available until next week. Furthermore, the price of the costume pack will be corrected to £3.19 in the UK and €3.99 for the rest of Europe.

Meanwhile, in North America, users have been reporting that the Kombat Pass isn't functioning properly on Xbox Live. Once redeemed, Skarlet appears on Xbox Live for 1200 MS Points ($15) -- three times the standalone price -- instead of being free. We've contacted Warner Bros. about the issue.

In the meantime, Netherrealm Studios community manager Rigo Cortes has posted a workaround on Twitter, stating, "If Skarlet DLC is incorrectly showing up as 1200MS points in the game store, exit the game [and] go to the XBL store [through] the console."

That LA Noire "Rockstar Pass" must be working out, because WB looked at the concept and said "get over here" for Mortal Kombat. The publisher just announced the "Kombat Pass" which allows you to pay ahead of time for all four DLC characters, including Skarlet, Kenshi, Rain, and one more unannounced character. Each character costs 400 points ($5) on their own; the pack runs 1200 points ($15) and will be available alongside the release of the Skarlet character on June 21.

This is an Xbox 360-exclusive offer; if you want more virtual murderers in the PS3 version, you'll have to buy them individually.

It's probably little surprise to you to learn that NetherRealm plans to release Skarlet, the stab-happy new female ninja who takes Mortal Kombat character design to the next logical step of evolution by tossing around gobs of blood like Rip Taylor tosses confetti, on June 21st. After all, she's been known about for a while, and it's been a couple of weeks since we got new MK DLC. Finally, a new kombatant shall appear!

For his first fatality, Rain will run you over with a little red Corvette. For his second, he'll strap you to a chair and force you to watch Under the Cherry Moon.

However, that's not really the news. The news, courtesy of IGN, is that more characters have been confirmed to follow. Kenshi, the blind ninja that everyone was pretty sure would be the next to arrive after Skarlet, will, in fact, be the next to arrive after Skarlet.

More interestingly, Rain, the purple, Prince-inspired ninja who has been kicking around since Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 will follow Kenshi. Ed Boon had been teasing Rain for months on Twitter, and now it seems he and the team plan to make good on all that teasing. Oh Ed, you teasing teaser, you.

Even more interesting than any of that is the news that a fourth kombatant will follow Rain, though who that will be is currently a mystery. Anyone want to start bandying guesses as to who it'll be? Shinnok? Meat? Literally anyone else? Please?

For those wondering how all these additional characters will impact elements like online play and compatibility, NetherRealm has a plan. With each DLC character release, the studio will release a new "compatibility pack," which allows players with the DLC to hook up online against those who don't, and vice versa. These packs are free, and will also come with some new character skins. The first one, which will drop alongside Skarlet, includes new UMK 3-inspired skins for both Cyrax and Sektor. Again, you get these through the compatibility pack, so they're free, regardless as to whether you buy Skarlet or not.

I know Jeff managed to get his hands-on a playable version of Skarlet at E3, but he ran off to go interview Ed Boon before I could ask him how she handled. Don't blame him, though. It's important we maintain our "Minimum of three Ed Boon interviews per year" quota around here. I'm sure if you ask him real nicely, he'll tell you if she was any good or not.

It wasn't too long ago that we heard Skarlet -- a blade-wielding hottie -- would be joining the Mortal Kombat cast, but now we know when she's coming and who will be coming after her. The new trailer below says "download now," but the Skarlet downloadable content will really hit the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 21, 2011. The trailer goes on to tease three additional characters -- Kenshi, Rain and a fighter to be named later...

And now YOU get a klassic Ermac! And YOU get a klassic Ermac! And you? Yup, you get a klassic Ermac, too!

If you're anything like the men of Giant Bomb, collecting all those scattered pre-order bonus costumes for Mortal Kombat was, to you, a calling second to none. Jeff and Ryan, in particular, got into a particularly heated competition to try and earn my unused Scorpion code. Jeff frequently tried to entice me with promises of free shitty PSP RPGs that happened to be sitting on his desk. Ryan took me to a Go! Team show. I think we know who won out on that one--though to be truthful, I ended up keeping the code for myself. Ain't I a stinker?

All that bartering and begging ultimately was pointless in the end, as series honcho Ed Boon let it be known via his Twitter feed yesterday that the first DLC pack for MK would be a collec--erm, sorry, kollection of all seven klassic kostumes--for Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Ermac, Jade, Mileena, and Kitana--and the accompanying klassic fatalities--for Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Reptile--would be bundled together into a single DLC pack. No pricing or release date has been announced for the pack just yet, though a trailer for the DLC is expected to drop tomorrow.

Boon likes to tease his Twitter followers with questions about what charact--okay, fine, "kharacters" fans would like to see as future DLC. Blind fighter Kenshi and a new female character named Skarlet are still slated to be the first ones released--with Skarlet apparently coming first--but Boon promises many more waves of additional kontent down the road. So don't worry if you're holding out for an updated version of Rain to fill out the last remaining color of the ninja rainbow, or just really want to play as Meat for some reason. Your day may yet come.

NetherRealm Studios head and Mortal Kombat co-creator ko-kreator Ed Boon has revealed via his Twitter feed that all of the retailer-specific pre-order DLC released for the series' ninth installment will soon be made available as one downloadable, for-pay kollection. "The 7 Klassic outfits & 3 Klassic fatalities that were retailer exclusives will be bundled into one DLC package," Boon writes. "Trailer coming on Friday."

For those who haven't been keeping tabs on said content, it includes "classic" variants of Ermac, Jade, Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, along with additional fatalities for Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Hopefully Friday's trailer will be accompanied by a date and price, so we can note it on our kalendars and put aside some kash.
