For us in North America, Trine 2 is a real thing, a game we can download and play and everything. Our brothers and sisters in gaming abroad have been denied Frozenbyte's sequel so far on PS3, thanks to a QA snafu at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Eurogamer reports.

"We are anxiously awaiting the European release ourselves!" exclaimed Frozenbyte's vice president Joel Kinnunen to Eurogamer. "We had both SCEA and SCEE versions ready at the same time and they are basically 100 percent the same (SCEA version already has all European languages, for example), so we are very disappointed we couldn't have a simultaneous launch. But it's out of our hands."

Right now, the game's in QA at SCEE with no release date in sight. Kinnunen says "hopefully we'll hear more soon," so when some news is conjured up, we'll be sure to let you all know.

A trine is a group of three. It was also a clever 2009 puzzle platformer starring a trio of adventurers, each with specific talents. Lucky us, now we have a sequel, Trine 2, that offers more fun physics-based challenges, more beautiful vistas, and adds online multiplayer to the mix. The first t...

The key to any puzzle is the "aha" moment, that moment when everything clicks into place, your brain gets a little jolt of pleasure and you feel just a tiny bit smarter. The final few numbers in sudoku, grasping the bizarre logic of Sam & Max, figuring out exactly where to put the next portal -- it's these moments that make puzzles worthwhile.

A puzzle with no "aha" is like a nut with no meat. You go to all the effort to crack open the shell, only to discover there's nothing inside. In nine hours of Trine 2, I've piled up a lot of shells, but not enough meat.

Developer Frozenbyte has added another level to the tri-pronged release of Trine 2, announcing the game's availability on the Mac App Store. This comes more than a week after Trine 2's release on Steam, three days before its release on PSN, and four days before it hits the Xbox Live Marketplace in North America. The App Store version will be getting an update next week.

A PC and Mac demo that includes online multiplayer is available now through Steam or on the game's official site, and a DRM-free version of Trine 2 is dropping in 2012, along with a standalone PC demo.

Listen, I know you are a busy person, so I’ll just leave this link here. It’s the Steam page for Trine 2. There’s a demo on there. It works on PC and Mac. It’s about as pretty as that pretty girl from your halcyon schooldays, you know, the one carved out of pretty, with nice hair. It really is that pretty. Read more about the game in this fine review, and then perhaps play yourself? Eh? Why not, it’s Saturday, after all. I don’t really believe you are that busy. You’ve probably got the day off.

Sorry for the silly post title, PlayStation.Blog amigos; we’re easily carried away. One could even say we’re Trine 2 hard.

Lollerskates, roflcopters, and other meme-related modes of transportation.

Jeer-worthy humor aside, we’re very excited to share with you that Trine 2, sequel to one of the highest-rated PlayStation Network games of all time, is coming to the PlayStation Store next Tuesday, December 20th.

But first: HAMMERTIME!

“What is Trine 2?” you ask, only to suddenly be filled with a powerful rush of guilt at your lack of Trine-related knowledge. “We’ll tell you,” we reply unnecessarily, clearly prepared to offer that information with or without your consent.

Trine 2 is a three-player cooperative action-packed physics-based platformer set in a lush fantasy world of cornea-searing colorful and beauty. Played from a side-scrolling 2D perspective (but breathtakingly rendered with polygons), gamers take control of one of three highly specialized characters — Pontius, the slow yet mighty knight; Zoya, the agile thief; or Amadeus, the crafty wizard — and guide them through puzzles and numerous foes. In addition to a host of improvements, additions, and tweaks over the original Trine, this much-anticipated sequel introduces highly anticipated online multiplayer, letting friends from all over team up and seek adventure.

6518673763_b204a0dfb6_z.jpg

Each character has distinct strengths and weaknesses, requiring the player(s) to properly use their skills to make it over, under, or through spike pits, gaping chasms, fiery hazards, and much more. As they quest and explore, the player can also acquire Experience vials that will ultimately allow them to learn new abilities for their three characters. Pontius, for example, can learn to swing a sword engulfed in flame, while Amadeus can improve his ability to craft multiple objects and even to throw enemies around using his magical powers.

Now, we could go on and on about just how vibrant Trine 2’s visuals are, or how improved it is in every sense over its predecessor. We really could, trust us. But why should we prattle on while we could just reinforce this charming attention grab with some third-party endorsement?

“Trine 2 is a lesson of how a great game should be. Action, platforming, puzzles, an impressive visual design, a great soundtrack, amazing level design and one of the best cooperative modes, both local and online, we have seen in a very long time.” -Vandal Online

“Trine 2 is a genuinely lovable game, and one that I can safely and heartily recommend to nearly everyone.” -GameSpy

“Trine 2 is a perfect sequel: better, bigger and funnier.” -Eurogamer.it

So, to recap… Physics-based action platforming? Check. Some of the most beautiful visuals EVER? Check. Satisfying action and puzzle solving? Check. Local and online support for the game’s beloved three-player cooperative multiplayer? Check.

Check, check, check, check, check… Oh wait, there’s one under the desk.. Check… Sorry, we spilled a box of checks and we’re just counting them. It’s messing up my train of thought as I check, er, write this.

Trine 2 will be available for PlayStation 3 system via the PlayStation Store on Tuesday, 12/20 for a price of $14.99. It is awesome and you should get it.

#trine You'll finally be able to get your hands on the medieval, character-switching action of Trine 2 today, if you're getting it on Steam. The game's gorgeous art style and beautiful color palette manifests into gorgeous vistas and sharp character animations. As previously mentioned, console versions release a little later. Either way, consider this sequel an anecdote to the grit and brown of the last few months' AAA games. More »

Cos Frozenbyte’s proper-lovely tri-person puzzle-platformer finally has a concrete release date, after a few months of to-ing and fro-ing in beta. And it’s tomorrow! Oh dear, has this become one of those announcement of an announcement posts? People get cross about those, you know.

No, I think it’s OK – as it’s pretty unusual form to announce the release date of your game two days before it happens.(more…)

Your favorite physics puzzle solving triumvirate of fantasy archetypes is reconvening December 7. Developer Frozenbyte has announced the impending availability of Trine 2. The wizard, rogue, and knight will launch a three-pronged assault on PC and Mac on December 7, available both on Steam and at European retailers.

It's only appropriate for Trine to have three separate release dates working together, and Frozenbyte acknowledges the game's tripartite nature. Following the December 7 PC release date, the game will arrive on the North American PSN December 20, and on XBLA worldwide the next day. A European PSN release date is still pending, "but we hope it won't be far behind if delayed at all," noted Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen.

FrozenByte’s ethereally-lit follow-up to their Lost Vikings-esque puzzle-platformer has been sitting temptingly on my hard drive for several weeks now, but my Skyrim habit has kept me from until today. I was still feeling a little raw after the freneticism of Serious Sam 3 and an unfortunate chilli-burn incident that temporarily cost me the use of my hands, but Trine 2‘s main menu alone is a balm for the soul if ever there was one. I’ve put a little time into the beta version – not enough for some sort of cast-iron verdict, but enough to go ‘d’awwwwwwwwwww’ and offer a few early observations.(more…)

Finnish developer Frozenbyte has announced that its upcoming cooperative platform puzzler Trine 2 will support cross-platform multiplayer across PC and Mac, courtesy of Valve's Steam Play framework. The ongoing beta is also now available for Mac, meaning would-be cross-platformers can test out the new feature immediately ... that is, if you pre-purchased the title.

Note: While Trine 2 will also be available via just about every method of digital distribution known to man - including GamersGate, Direct2Drive, the Mac App Store, Xbox Live Arcade, and PlayStation Network - only the Steam PC and Mac releases will support cross-platform play. Sorry, Xbox players won't be buddying up with PS3 players. The release is still a vague "later in 2011" and if our Finnish Indie Dev Hunks calendar is accurate, there isn't much of 2011 left.

Trine 2 is coming to PC, Mac, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in downloadable form in North America and Europe this year -- which makes the Europe-exclusive physical collector's edition of Trine 2 that much more, well, collectable. Focus Home Interactive is releasing the IRL collector's edition in Europe, which includes the game for both PC and Mac, an art book, the soundtrack, and access to downloadable versions of Trine 2 and the original Trine. It will cost €19.99 (£14.99 in U.K.).

I was operating under the belief that everything was beautiful in Trine 2′s world, whether the rushes growing by a crystal clear pool or the giant mushrooms with a candle’s light casting a glow from their interior. And then they went and showed me a bloody spider. It’s a right horrible one as well, with segmented legs thicker than a bemuscled torso. Thankfully, the other three new screenshots don’t contain anything repulsive, unless you’re particularly offended by beautiful fantasy environments. Are you? Then don’t click on the images below for larger versions or you might be sick all over your keyboard!

If the promise of co-op goodness isn't incentive enough to pre-order Trine 2, it looks like Frozenbyte has sweetened up the deal. The game is now available for pre-purchase on Steam for $15, and those who take the plunge will receive access to the multiplayer beta. The beta will include two levels, though few other details have been revealed, including when the beta will actually start. Given the game is set to be released this December, it shouldn't be too long.
