Star Fox 64 3D manages to force its way into the new market, showing how its strong gameplay foundation from 1997 has stood the test of time to make it one of the most enjoyable titles on Nintendo 3DS so far. It may not be as updated as some may have liked, but that certainly does not prevent Nintendo from having another top quality game on 3DS now.

One of the most distinguishing features from the original Star Fox 64 was the ability to go alternate routes. Depending on which path you take in a given level, which planet you go to next alters, as do the events that take place leading up to the final fight with Andross. Having a branched progression system that affects the story was a huge achievement back in the N64 days, and remains one of the more memorable parts of the game's legacy...

Star Fox 64 is still a great video game, and the 3DS hardware offers improvements and useless additions equally. I enjoyed the updated visuals and 3D effects, but I wanted to turn off the gyro controls the second I used them. Once it was off, however, I found myself loving every second of the game like it was 1997 all over again. This remake might not be the AAA first-party killer app the 3DS needs, but it’s a solid piece of nostalgia for longtime fans and an exceptionally strong shooter for newcomers to the series.

Star Fox 64 3D is a fantastic version of the best game in the Star Fox series. If you've already played the Nintendo 64 version to death all we need to tell you is that nothing has been ruined. The only changes made are improvements, so you'll already know this is a must-have title.

From the Ars Technica review:

Even the 3D effect is used effectively—your lasers look as if they fly into the screen when you aim at the bad guys, and the tight corridors and obstacles that zoom around the levels look crisp and bright in full 3D. The game benefits greatly from the illusion of depth, and in many cases it even makes the game easier to play. You can also play the game using the gyroscopic controls, tilting the system to move your ship, but this means you have to turn the 3D off, and the motion controls remove precision in favor of gimmickry. I stuck with the standard controls.

Over the past several days you've been able to check out tons of Star Fox footage and even our full review of the game. No doubt some of you are still wondering if this remake is truly worth the $40. Some of the biggest changes in the game come in the form of visual upgrades, and while it's easy to assume the Nintendo 64 version might look similar, we went and captured footage from both to show you...

A trip down memory lane for some, Star Fox 64 3D takes us back to the days when a barrel roll was enough to dodge a barrage of bullets. Star Fox 64 3D is a relaxing shooter, perhaps, even a gateway to the genre. Oh, and speaking of "barrel rolls" the game has language options. Switch your system to French or Spanish to hear the Star Fox team’s classic lines with different voice acting.

...this release can provide thrills and addictive shoot-em-up action to both veterans and those new to the game, its irrepressible energy enough to make us forget that we’ve done it all before.

This is a fantastic game, and this iteration is the definitive version. The big question with Star Fox 64 3D, though, is should people who played the hell out of the original get it. There isn't much new content in the remake, but if you’re hankering for some barrel rolls, then you should get Star Fox 64 3D. It’s a splendid update of an already great game.

It's hard to believe 14 years have passed since Star Fox 64 first landed on the Nintendo 64. Fast forward to today, and the title has leapt into the spotlight once more with its very own 3DS remake. But does Star Fox 64 3D live up to the original? In short -- absolutely...

...Star Fox 64 3D is still an excellent version of this title and arguably a better choice for those new to the game, free of memories of the original. For those who lived and breathed the N64 original, you’re best off either dusting off the old classic, or grabbing it for $10 on the Virtual Console. If you’re new to the game, and especially if you have trouble playing games with dated visuals, Star Fox 64 3D is still a fantastic rendition and well worth your time.

It's another carefully crafted package in the manner of Ocarina 3D, then, yet the ancient quality that Star Fox 64 3D exudes only makes you wish that Nintendo was releasing a few more, you know, entirely new games. Luigi, Mario and Kid Icarus are still a few months off, for the time being. Until then, I'll be hanging out with Slippy, Peppy, and Falco - that jerk.

Are you excited? Fall is almost upon us, and that means video games. Lots and lots of video games. Though the going has been a bit slow for Nintendo this year, both the Wii and Nintendo 3DS are about to see an incredible surge of software. That begins with the release of Star Fox 64 3DS...
